MacBook Air Rumors Reach Fever Pitch

MacBook Air Rumors Reach Fever Pitch

With Apple’s “Back To The Mac” event now only three days away, the rumor mill is churning at a rate of knots. Engadget has a picture that is supposedly the new MacBook Air, although it brings into question a contradictory rumor that the new Air would be only 11.6″. MacRumors updates with some new information, including possible specs. They claim the new Air will be available in 11.6″ and 13.3″ sizes, both unibody design and thinner than the current model. The new Air will also apparently all contain SSD cards rather than traditional hard drives. They will use Core 2 Duo CPUs with 2GB of RAM. The photo…

3 Out Of 4 Tweets Go Unnoticed

3 Out Of 4 Tweets Go Unnoticed

According to yet another lukewarm survey by yet another random analytics company, your tweets are worthless and nobody likes you. Research conducted using 1.2 billion posts over the past 2 months found that 71% of tweets disappear into thin air. Only 6% of tweets were retweeted, 23% received a reply. Over 90% of retweets occur within the first hour. More amazingly, only 1.53% of Twitter conversations go further than two replies. It’s comforting to know that something tweeted in error after a drunken night out won’t still be a conversation point in five years time, but surely the negative implications…

Is That A Phone In Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

Is That A Phone In Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

Check this. Seriously, check it. I can see your cursor on the scroll bar, there. Stop for a second and freaking check this, alright? Alright, cool. Here at Techi, as with most other tech blogs you can name, we frequently look at emerging technologies. Sometimes they rock, and this is most certainly one of those times. Engineers at the University of Washington have developed a prototype smartphone dubbed the ‘SqueezeBlock’ that… well, it kinda does exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a phone. That you can squeeze. Alright, so it’s more than that. Really, it’s a shapeshifting phone, that can use…

iLife Stocks Dwindling

iLife Stocks Dwindling

Ahead of Apple’s upcoming October 20th announcement event, people have been wondering exactly what will be announced. Of course, 10.7 Lion seems to be the obvious answer, considering the image used in the event invitation, but there’s one other announcement that might also make sense for the event. Apple’s iLife software is over two years old, a lifetime in computer terms, longer considering how far Apple has advanced in that short time. The new Mac OS might not be released for another year or so, but by then iLife will be three years old. The new iLife hasn’t been discussed at all, but Apple has moved…

No Flash For Windows Phone 7.. Shocking

No Flash For Windows Phone 7.. Shocking

One point I was curious about among the tidbits regarding the release of Windows Phone 7 is what kind of support Flash will receive. Adobe and Google have been hiding in dark corners together, murmuring about how best to deal with Apple’s threat to both of their business models, but where does Microsoft stand on all that? Turns out Windows Phone 7 contains absolutely no Flash support whatsoever. Microsoft’s Andy Lees, president of the mobile communications division spoke out about Flash on WP7, and insisted it wasn’t a “religious thing”. “It’s not a religious thing; we support standard H.264…

Robot Curtain Makes Privacy Cool Again

Robot Curtain Makes Privacy Cool Again

Niklas Roy’s workshop has a large window right in front. After getting fed up of passersby peering in, he decided to take action. In a move that would make Mark Zuckerberg’s head explode, Roy came up with a privacy scheme so nerdy and so unique that he’ll almost certainly win the Techi Nerdiest Solution To An Everyday Problem award. If the award existed. Or even Techi awards existed. Niklas’ may have been short on curtains and tall on tech, or he may just have been looking for a creative approach. Either way, this is awesome. I won’t ruin it for you, but the small piece of curtain uses robotics to move along…

Atomic Tom Drops The Bomb On The B Train

Atomic Tom Drops The Bomb On The B Train

No, this isn’t a terrorist threat. Atomic Tom, a New York based band was looking for a little exposure, and a train carriage full of commuters is the perfect captive audience. After having their instruments stolen, the boys turned to technology for an impromptu mobile gig. Using their iPhones as instruments, the band rocked out to a small crowd of bewildered travelers. “I saw Atomic Tom perform on the B train today… at first i thought they were going to bomb the train, but then they started playing and i was like ‘i love new york!’ liked them so much, i asked a stranger for the band name.” said Brittany…

Texting On The Rise In North America

Texting On The Rise In North America

The trend towards cell phones as general communications devices continues, as a report from the Nielsen Company (yeah, that Nielsen Company) shows that more teens are typing it rather than speaking it. Between April and June 2010, teens from 13 to 17 sent or received more than six text messaged each waking hour, equivalent to around 3,400 texts per month. Girls are ahead of boys, with around 4000 monthly texts and boys only averaging around 2500. At the same time, voice calls were down 14%. Data usage is also on the rise, with browser and email usage rising from an average of 14mb per month to around…

The Quest for the Perfect iPhone Gaming Accessory Has a Champion

The Quest for the Perfect iPhone Gaming Accessory Has a Champion

Alright, alright, I admit it. The iPhone is a gaming machine. I’ve spent the last few years actively tearing down people’s insistence that Apple holds any sway in the gaming arena, but there’s really no denying it anymore – they do, if only for silly casual games as of yet. But it’s only a matter of time before real, actual factual games properly find their way onto the platform. But how the hell are we going to play them? Apple would have you believe that you need only tilt control and a touch screen to play games, but any gamer knows that’s an outright joke. What we need is a controller, or Steve? We ain’t…

Chilean Miners (Yes, Those Miners) Gifted Free iPods by Jobs

Chilean Miners (Yes, Those Miners) Gifted Free iPods by Jobs

While their story is one of bravery and heroism and all that good stuff (I promise I’m being sincere), everyone and their dog is trying to get a piece of the trapped Chilean miners pie, even Big Steve, who has donated to each of the miners ‘a latest iPod [sic]‘, as reported by Reuters. By ‘a latest’, I’m gonna assume a 32-gig Touch, which is pretty rad, just for sitting in a cave for 69 days. Then again, the miners have also been gifted $10000 each, trips around the world, movie deals, and tickets to sporting events, among other things. Steve’s offering seems more like a quick shot to stay in the public consciousness…

Rock-em, Sock-em Robot Beats Up Volunteers In the Name of Science

Rock-em, Sock-em Robot Beats Up Volunteers In the Name of Science

Six Slovenian volunteers have been undergoing a bizarre test: being punched in the arm over, and over, and over, and over again by a robot. A researcher at the University of Ljubljana, Borut PovÅ¡e, has somehow coerced six of his colleagues to agree to let an industrial robot repeatedly sock them in the arm, in an effort to discover the threshold of robot power. Honestly, had I known this is the kind of stuff I could be doing with my life, I’d have paid more attention in science class. “Even robots designed to Asimov’s laws can collide with people. We are trying to make sure that when they do, the collision…

Why a Verizon iPhone is Good For Everyone

Why a Verizon iPhone is Good For Everyone

Now that both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have suggested Apple’s iPhone is coming to Verizon, it’s likely a safe bet it’s happening. Sure, some details like dates might be off; but with both major outlets saying the same thing, let’s all just agree it’s coming now, ‘kay? But with Verizon having around 90 million wireless subscribers, the iPhone’s arrival will send some send significant ripples through the industry. After all, after only being on only one provider, Apple have jumped to having around a quarter of the smartphone market in a few short years. With significantly more…
