Lesson Learned from Android Trojan: Download from Official Venues

That’s how much people saved by downloading free Android app called Android.Walkinwat from unofficial venues rather than the real app, Walk and Text, from the Android market. Once downloaded and installed, the app redirects you to the actual app on the Android marketplace.

Then, it sends an SMS message to all of your contacts:

Hey,just downlaoded [sic] a pirated app off the internet, Walk and Text for Android. Im stupid and cheap, it costed only 1 buck. Dont steal like I did!

As our friends over at HotHardware said, it’s Shameware.

There are certain precautions people should take when downloading legally. Downloading illegally is in a whole other realm. There are those who want a completely free Internet and mobile experience just as there are organizations promoting such concepts. Until that day comes, learn the lesson here: download from official venues only. Does it cost money? Sometimes. Does it make you more secure and potentially less embarrassed?

Absolutely.

The problem is some of us CAN’T BUY STUFF ON ANDROID MARKET … most of the world population doesn’t live in USA — u hear me Google?

You make a good point nEJC76. But the Android OS is the fastest-growing smartphone platform, so it makes sense that it might take some time for the company to catch up with the worldwide market, even though we are kind of living in a post-geographic age where giant companies like Google should sort of be aware that their customer base will be worldwide – I mean, they’re Google for crying out loud.

On the other hand, I’m not Google. I don’t work for them, and I don’t have all the problems that they have to deal with. Frankly, I don’t know what I’d do if I did. It’s hard to be the king. We little people scurrying around down here can point out what they’re doing that’s wrong and complain about what we want, but ultimately we see just a very small fraction of the entire machine. It’s like the blind man with the elephant…just try not to get stepped on.
