10 most unsafe campuses in America

When it’s time to choose a college, there are a few questions most people consider. Is it a party school? What major programs does it offer? How expensive is it? Is it far enough away from my parents? While all of these questions are worthy of consideration, you should also ask yourself, “How safe is this school?”

This infographic explores the ten most unsafe college campuses in the United States. The rankings are based on how many property crimes and violent crimes are committed compared to the number of students who attend the universities. The West Coast and the Southeast have the highest concentrations of crimes per capita on college campuses in the country.

While you sure aren’t guaranteed safety at schools in the North and Midwest, statistics show you probably have better chances of avoiding bodily harm and/or theft if you attend college there. However, it is important to keep in mind that these numbers are only from reported crimes. Violent physical crimes such as rape and assault often times go unreported.

Crimes such as forcible rape, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and arson contribute to the reported crimes used in the ranking system. If any of these crimes scare you (which they should), you should do your research on school crime rates while you are still in the decision process.

In order to stay safe, you have to be aware of what’s actually happening around you. Consider this infographic as a background check on potential universities. One state in the list has a whopping three universities on this list. Can you guess which state it is? Read on to find out.
