Pinterest wants to expand beyond pictures, enter article bookmarking realm

It was bound to happen. Those who have been in social media for a while know that niche sites rarely stay within their initial scope. Flickr and YouTube are the exceptions as they’ve stayed true to their initial calling in pictures and videos, but Pinterest hopes to extend to the world of articles.

Only days after announcing the launch of ads, social networking site Pinterest is now making an appeal to publishers: the company is today rolling out an updated “article” pin type, designed to expand Pinterest’s reach beyond those pinning photographs or product images linking to e-commerce sites, to those also interested in saving and sharing stories they’re finding around the web.

The updated article pins will now include more information such as the headline, author, story description, and link to the source right on the pin itself.
