Only two smartphone makers have over 50% customer retention rate

A recent Statista survey of more than 3,000 smartphone owners asked them whether they planned to stick with their current brand the next time they bought a new device. Unsurprisingly Apple fans were the most loyal, as 76% said they planned to stick with the iPhone. Samsung came in second place, with 58% of Galaxy owners saying they planned to buy a Samsung phone with their next purchase.

When it comes to brand retention, AppleAAPL -1.12% is far ahead of the pack, according to data from WDS that was compiled by Statista. Among 3,000 people surveyed in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia, 76% said they stuck with an Apple smartphone. That makes sense: While Apple customers tend to be quite happy with iDevices, once someone puts down roots in the iOS ecosystem there is nowhere else to go. It’s easier for someone in the Android world to switch between, say, Samsung005930.SE -1.16%and HTC devices. In that light, Samsung’s 58% retention rate is a pretty good number.
