Microsoft teases Halo 5: Guardians ahead of E3 2014

Microsoft has given a timeframe and a subtitle to its first major new Halo game for the Xbox One. The game will be called Halo 5: Guardians, and it’ll launch in fall 2015. A Microsoft blog post describes the game as “the next installment in the legendary saga of the Master Chief.” Microsoft also plans to launch the Halo television series around the same time. Details are still scarce, with no additional trailers or screenshots to go along with announcement, and only vague promises of what the game will be like.

Shock news, as it was announced that the sequel to Halo 4 would be called Halo 5. This is the sort of crazy, out of the box thinking Microsoft has been missing. Slightly more seriously, 343 Industries General Manager Bonnie Ross has confirmed in a post to Xbox Wire that the next major instalment in the Halo series, Microsoft’s best-selling first-party console franchise, will release in fall 2015, leaving space for one more cross-platform Halo release this holiday season. The Halo TV series, announced last year but subject to something of a news vacuum since, will also arrive on screens in 2015. Halo 5: Guardians will enter a console race probably somewhat transformed from the current state, where Sony’s PlayStation 4 is handily outselling the Xbox One with a lower price point and a marketing campaign focused more heavily on core gamers.
