Nokia Cyan users will soon be getting the Windows Phone 8.1 update

Its safe to say that ever since Microsoft detailed Windows Phone 8.1 users of its mobile platform have been anxious to get their hands on this update. Majority of those users will be on a Nokia Lumia device since the company’s devices have a dominant share in the WP market. For those users its going to be rolled out as the Nokia Cyan update. Users in some select markets report that they have begun receiving the Nokia Cyan Windows Phone 8.1 update on their devices. The reason why this update has a different moniker is because the Cyan update also includes improvements and features that will be exclusive to Nokia’s devices. Though the underlying OS is still very much Windows Phone 8.1 so all of the features Microsoft has promised for this update will be included in Cyan as well.

Windows Phone 8.1 is a major update and one we found to make a big difference to user experience. Couple it with Nokia’s large set of home-baked goodies and you get a software boost that can markedly improve your relationship with your phone. The great news is that the rollout has finally begun. The first smartphone to get the upgrade is the Nokia Lumia 625, which is a change of pattern for the manufacturer – traditionally it was high-end smartphones that got the updates first. It appears that the update is rolling out in stages and right now selected users in Taiwan, Spain and Finland are getting it as a part of some sort of pilot program. If they don’t face any issues with the new firmware then we can expect their compatriots to join the fun, with global availability of the update to follow shortly after. Here’s a breakdown of the new features brought by Windows Phone 8.1, which the Nokia Cyan extends with Creative Studio app, Bluetooth 4.0 LE support and ingrained display controls. There are even more updates, but those are hardware specific and won’t work on all devices.
