Samsung has announced the Exynos ModAP

Just yesterday Samsung had teased that they would be making some Exynos-related announcements. One of the rumors had suggested that Samsung would finally be bringing LTE connectivity to their Exynos lineup, and sure enough they did with the Samsung ModAP. Previously Samsung had to rely on Qualcomm’s offerings to enable LTE on their phones, but now with the Exynos ModAP, it looks like Samsung’s reliance on Qualcomm could be lessened. Now unlike some of Samsung’s Exynos 5 chipsets which were of the octa-core variety, the Exynos ModAP will be of the quad-core variety. While some users might not be able to notice the difference, on paper it does seem like it would be less powerful.

Samsung on Thursday announced its latest Exynos technology, called Exynos ModAP, which integrates an LTE chip with a quad-core processor, built on 28nm processors. The chip is widely expected to show up in Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 when it’s announced later this year, according to reports. Aside from the inclusion of LTE, the new Exynos also promises faster multitasking and a more power-efficient platform overall. On Samsung’s site, the company says Exynos ModAP series is capable of supporting the “4G LTE Release 9 of 3GPP and Cat 4, at both duplex mode, FDD and TDD, in addition to legacy 2G and 3G mobile interfaces.” The chip also runs cooler, hence the icy image teased by the company yesterday. In addition, it comes with an advanced Image Signal Process (ISP), which promises for better image and video capture. Meanwhile, the ModAP series also sports higher memory bandwidth, meaning you can expect more graphically intensive apps and games in the future. I’m sure stuff will look especially nice when the Note 4 hits this fall. Additionally, Samsung also introduced the Exynos Modem, Companion Chip and an entire reference platform for developers.
