OnePlus expects to sell more than five million smartphones this year

A million smartphone sales may not be much to market leaders like Samsung or Xiaomi, but for a small startup releasing its first device, that’s an incredible number. Even though this level of success caught OnePlus by surprise, as well as pretty much everyone else, the Chinese startup is going to be prepared the second time around. In fact, the company expects to sell more than five million smartphones this year, an ambitious goal to say the least. Let’s see if OnePlus can strike gold a second time.

Whatever you may think about OnePlus, there’s no doubting that the company has come a long way in a very short amount of time. But after selling around a million handsets last year, launching the One in markets around the world, and rolling out its own Android-based OxygenOS user experience, OnePlus isn’t planning to scale back its ambitions. In fact, as Bloomberg reports, OnePlus expects to do even better this year, anticipating sales of between three and five million units worldwide. Interest in its One handset remains high, but many potential buyers are now anticipating the arrival of its successor later this year. OnePlus CEO Carl Pei confirmed in March that the new flagship would arrive within six months, hinting at a likely launch around September. But he also revealed that the company is developing another handset, “catering to a different type of audience. Perhaps for those who appreciate design over specs.”
