Electric vehicles may be what saves Acer from dying off

With how poorly the PC market has been doing in recent years, and how poorly Acer’s foray into the mobile market has been, it’s obvious the Taiwanese company needs to find other sources of revenue if it wants to stay alive, and it looks like the electric vehicle market may be that source of revenue. The company showed off the result its new electric vehicles division at a trade show in Germany, which it hopes will be able to power electric vehicles int he near future.

You can add Acer to the list of companies interested in the burgeoning EV market. The firm recently announced plans to develop its own electric car batteries and power systems, and even unveiled a prototype. The all-terrain vehicle Acer showed off at the eCarTex Munich trade show in Germany won’t be going head-to-head with Tesla and the rest of the auto industry anytime soon. According to WantChinaTimes, it was designed to show off the company’s other research, including cloud computing technology designed for connected cars. DigiTimes reports that Acer’s new car-focused business is actually an offshoot of its Build Your Own Cloud (BYOC) division. The group includes 10 engineers poached from Taiwan-based China Motor, along with some Acer employees. The company expects to work directly with smaller carmakers for the most part. It doesn’t sound like we’ll be driving an Acer-branded car anytime soon, but it can’t hurt to have more companies developing new technology to power future electric vehicles.
