GoPro has released some teaser footage for its upcoming drone

Remember a few months back when we started hearing rumors that GoPro was working on its own consumer drone? Well the company confirmed those rumors earlier this week when it released some teaser footage that was shot from one of its drones. The footage looks as awesome as you’d expect, but what’s really impressive is how smooth and stable it is, which is really difficult to achieve with a moving drone. 

GoPro, Inc. on Wednesday released footage from a prototype of its new drone (or, as GoPro refers to it, a “quadcopter”), which is set to launch in the first half of 2016. The silky smooth footage takes viewers over, through and around a forest, and includes text to make it clear the footage has not been stabilized in postproduction. The footage appears more or less on par with competitors DJI, maker of the Phantom 3 model of drones which starts as low as $699, and Yuneec, maker of the Typhoon which starts as low as $1,149. Both Yuneec and DJI are China-based drone manufacturers. GoPro shares took a big hit Wednesday, tumbling 15% in after-hours trade following a big earnings and sales miss. The company reported net income of $18.8 million, or 13 cents a share, compared with $14.6 million, or 10 cents, in the year-earlier period. Shares of GoPro have fallen more than 50% over the last three months, vastly underperforming the S&P 500, which is virtually flat.
