The unbreakable, unhackable Turing Phone has been delayed

Liquidmophium is a type of liquid metal that looks and sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, with Terminator 2 being the first movie that comes to mind, but it’s actually real, and Turing Robotic Industries is making a smartphone out of it. You may have even heard about the Turing Phone recently, which is being described as both physically durable, thanks to how naturally strong liquidmophium is, and virtually unhackable, which is a big selling point in the post-Snowden world. As awesome as that sounds, none of that means much if people can’t actually get their hands on the device. Originally scheduled to ship on December 18th, the Turing Phone has been delayed until next year, which means people who pre-ordered the device might not receive it until the end of March 2016. 

The “unhackable” Turing Phone might be all hype and no show. Turing Robotic Industries said the device, which was supposed to ship by December 18, has been delayed, and the company hasn’t mentioned a specific new shipping date, according to Android Police. The Turing Phone is pretty unique — It’s made from Liquidmorphium, a liquid metal, and sports a sleek, futuristic design. But the smartphone’s key feature is its software protection. The software — which is Android at the core, but has TRI’s security-focused UI — acts as a secure space that offers email, messaging, and its own social network. It encrypts data stored on the device, and also features the company’s own end-to-end encryption, which has a public key and private key. The company promises that the devices will ship no later than the end of March 2016, and offers a full refund for those who wish to cancel their pre-order. If you stick with the company, you’ll get a free upgrade — meaning if you ordered the 16GB model, you’ll get the 64GB version. Likewise, if you grabbed the 64GB model, you’ll be upgraded to 128GB. And if you happened to order the 128GB model, you’ll get the limited edition Turing Phone. That’s a pretty good offer, considering the jump in storage sizes for the device is $130.
