A YouTube superstar is getting her own show on Netflix

Hot on the heels of PewDiePie’s announcement that he’s launching his own premium content network, fellow YouTube superstar Miranda Sings, who’s actually a character portrayed by comedian Colleen Ballinger-Evans, has announced that she’s working with Netflix to create her own series. It’s going to be an eight-episode comedy series called Haters Back Off that’ll take a closer look at the family life of a character that Evans has described as an “incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise.” Considering how the Miranda Sings channel has nearly six billion subscribers on YouTube, the series is sure to be popular, but if Fred: The Show proved anything, it’s that YouTube popularity doesn’t mean your show isn’t going to be a steaming pile of crap. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Say what you will about Miranda Sings’ vocal abilities (or lack thereof), but the girl’s got some serious star power. At least, that’s what she thinks. And that’s what Netflix is now banking on. The popular YouTube character, created by comedian Colleen Ballinger-Evans, has inked a deal with Netflix to star in an eight-episode scripted series called “Haters Back Off.” The comedy will reportedly expand on Miranda’s eccentric personality and fight toward fame, as well as give audiences a glimpse into her (probably semi-dysfunctional) family life. She announced the news in character on Thursday (Jan. 14) with a video titled “I’M PREGNANT.” (With a TV show, that is.) Ballinger-Evans debuted Miranda Sings in 2008 and has since made more than 500 videos and racked up more than 5.7 million subscribers. She’s also appeared in character on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious” and Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” and has earned a Streamy Award and a Teen Choice Award nomination for her videos. Miranda Sings is a super confident but rather tone-deaf wannabe superstar who sports a crooked smile, wildly active eyebrows and smeared lipstick in the brightest shade of red imaginable. Her videos range from recaps of her daily activities, collaborations with other YouTubers, tutorials, cover songs and music video parodies — like the one below, where she inserted herself into Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” video.
