GoDaddy lost 72,354 domains this week. It's not enough.

Despite a massive Twitter campaign and a blog post that claims “Go Daddy no longer supports SOPA legislation” the company and their CEO have dodged questions about opposing the bill. In essence, they are taking a lesser role by not showing support for the bill. They have not opposed it. This week, they lost around 72,000 domain registrations. At a yearly discounted rate of $6.99 (most registrations are higher), that’s over half a million dollars per year. It is apparently not enough for them to speak out against the bill. Everyone from large corporations like Google down to small startups like…

Who will buy T-Mobile now?

Who will buy T-Mobile now?

The unraveling of the AT&T merger with T-Mobile was not entirely bad for the fourth largest mobile carrier in the US. They get $3 billion. It isn’t enough to keep them afloat for more than a year or two, but it does buy them time to find someone else. It gives them time to formulate a plan-B. Unfortunately, they don’t know what plan-B is for them. It was shortsighted of Deutsche Telekom to go into this without a plan-B. Putting all of one’s eggs in a single basket makes no sense when so much as at stake. The company has to regroup quickly. First, they have to make themselves valid by improving the infrastructure….

Technology use on American college campuses

Technology use on American college campuses

Colleges have always been a venue for the latest and greatest in technology to not only be used, but often created as well. Today’s and tomorrow’s college students are “ultra-connected” and many do not even know what life would be like without constant contact with the internet, their friends and family, or the devices that bridge the real world to the virtual existence that often lives in our pockets. This infographic explores the way that American students and the colleges they attend have integrated technology into education in ways that were unfathomable just a couple of decades ago. Click…

Saudi Prince pumps $300 million into Twitter

Saudi Prince pumps $300 million into Twitter

Twitter’s latest major chunk of backing comes from the Arab world as Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal invested $300 million into the microblogging site according to Bloomberg. Twitter has not made a statement about the investment other than to confirm that it was made. As the social network attempts to improve their revenue stream and appeal to advertisers, the investment means having a little more time to lose money and perfect their business model. Depending on which numbers you believe, the site has between 100 million and 250 million users worldwide. “They are looking to give themselves…

2011 through the eyes of Google (and therefore, the world)

2011 through the eyes of Google (and therefore, the world)

Every year, Google composes a Zeitgeist report that attempts to capture the essence of the year and give a glimpse of what we can expect in the coming year. This year’s message was simple but fitting: “we made it.” It matches the sentiment shared by many through the tumultuous revolution around the sun known as 2011. We saw notable deaths that marked the end of eras, the end of regimes, and the end of legends. Disasters from above and below rocked the world in ways we haven’t seen in decades. People rebelled, occupied, and even found themselves in situations where the only way to make things seem sane…

Google has a Siri competitor around the corner

Google has a Siri competitor around the corner

Google’s competitor for Apple’s Siri is codenamed “Majel” and could be launched before the end of the year according to AndroidandMe. Geeks are aware that Majel is a reference to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and the voice of the computer on Starships as well as various roles on several of the Star Trek shows. Google’s Voice Actions is currently in use on most Android phones. While Siri functions primarily from natural speech, Google’s VA operates through direct and specific commands. Majel is intended to change that. While December is possible, that…

Google top execs offer to save NASA

Google top execs offer to save NASA's Hangar One... to house their private jets

It is said that most acts of kindness are done with ulterior motives in mind. The offer that Google’s top executives – CEO Larry Page, co-founder Sergey Brin, and Chairman Eric Schmidt – made to NASA to save the iconic landmark may qualify. NASA needs $33 million to revamp the hangar. The Google execs, through a separate company they own called H211 which operates the 8 private jets owned by the Google trio, would like a new place to park their jets. H211 would like around 2/3rds of the floor space at Hangar One for their jets. Their proposal would keep NASA as the owner and would allow them to lease the…

Watch the blood red moon on Saturday morning

Watch the blood red moon on Saturday morning

Sky watchers on the US west coast all the way over to east Asia are in for a rare treat in the early morning hours this Saturday, December 10th. A total lunar eclipse will grace the sky and is anticipated to be one of the brightest, deepest red moons in years. According to NASA, “The action begins around 4:45 am Pacific Standard Time when the red shadow of Earth first falls across the lunar disk.  By 6:05 am Pacific Time, the Moon will be fully engulfed in red light. This event—the last total lunar eclipse until 2014—is visible from the Pacific side of North America, across the entire Pacific Ocean…

Toyota Fun-Vii concept car is like a "smartphone on 4 wheels"

It’s been a long time since a concept car has really sparked the imagination of tech geeks and car enthusiasts alike. When Toyota unveiled their latest concept car, the Fun-Vii, at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show this week, everyone from Automobile Magazine to Mashable jumped in to discuss its proposed paradigm-shifting features. It’s clear what the “Fun” part of the name means just by watching the second video below. The “Vii” stands for Vehicle, Interactive, Internet. Inside and out, most aspects of the car can interact with the internet and be controlled by a smartphone. Most surfaces on and within…

Why I just bought 4 more Kindle Fires

Why I just bought 4 more Kindle Fires

Few devices have come along that have truly made me say, “Wow”. Perhaps the last one was the first iPhone. Even the iPad did little to earn my excitement. Those who read this may wonder how much Amazon is paying me. There are times when brand-advocacy comes truly from the heart and this is one of those times. The Kindle Fire by Amazon is the best technology purchase I’ve made in a while, so good that I just ordered one for every member of my family. Here’s why: The right size One of the reasons that I went with the iPad 2 instead of some of the Android devices that piqued my interest had nothing to do with being…

Can STEM fix America?

Can STEM fix America?

Two trends in American culture contradict each other. On one hand, technological and scientific fields are struggling to find qualified people to fill jobs. On the other hand, the education system are not focusing on producing more STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) enriched students. Nearly 3/4ths of students talented in math and science decide to pursue STEM degrees in college. Can bringing these two trends more in line with one another fix many of the growing problems in America? To answer that question, it’s important to have a more clear understanding of what STEM really is….

Google+ television ads are pointing people in the wrong direction

Google+ television ads are pointing people in the wrong direction

When I heard that Google had put out their first Google+ television commercial, I was both impressed and a little excited. “Finally,” I thought, “they’re going to make a push to bring Google+ into mainstream consciousness.” I watched the commercial and immediately facepalmed. Despite clear indications from users and bloggers that Google+ Circles is a nice feature but not the thing that would separate it from Facebook, Google continues to highlight it as something special. “Sharing but like real life.” That’s the message. It’s very Applesque in styling and concept. It’s even delivered in…
