Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

Today is Guy Fawkes day. On this day in 1605, Fawkes was arrested for attempting to blow up King James I of England and members of both houses of Parliament. Made immortal in geekdom by the movie “V for Vendetta” and perpetuated thanks to the mask-wearing of Anonymous, the date will always be associated with this poem: Remember, remember, the 5th of November The Gunpowder Treason and plot; I see of no reason why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot. * * * “Remember” image courtesy of Why I Didn’t Write….

Why is HP bringing out their big Windows 8 tablet in January?

Why is HP bringing out their big Windows 8 tablet in January?

It’s easy to pick on a company when they’re down and despite some good moves in the last year by HP, they’re still down. With that said, what was behind the decision to launch their business-friendly Windows 8 tablet in January? Being that its primary audience will be the business world, Christmas may not be as important, but they’re still missing out on a portion of the potential sales. More importantly, they will be following several other big-launch tablets, including some Windows 8 competitors. Lastly, this was first teased during the Olympics. Why is it coming out next year? According to Engadget:…

If Iran goes dark on the internet, will citizens find a way to stay connected?

If Iran goes dark on the internet, will citizens find a way to stay connected?

It’s widely assumed that as soon as Iran is able to fully implement its country-wide internet, that they will block all access to the outside world for its citizens. With plans currently laid to set the country on an internal system by March, 2013, the country is on the edge of going dark. Today, they blocked Google and its services in what many consider a response to the company’s YouTube property broadcasting an anti-Islamic message through the controversial video that has sent ripples around the world all week. “Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice,”…

Robot noodle slicer grows in popularity in China

Robot noodle slicer grows in popularity in China

They may not make an appearance on The Iin a way that people ron Chef any time soon but the “Robot Chef” is able to slice noodles quickly, efficiently, and in a way that hasn’t turned off patrons of noodle houses in Beijing. Perhaps most importantly for business owners, they are cheaper and don’t complain as much as human employees. When Cui Runguan came up with the idea to make the robot chef in 2006, the idea was that it’s the type of job that most people cannot do long term. It’s tiring, repetitive, and simple enough for the windshield-wiper technology of the robot to duplicate. At less than $2000 a machine,…

Is it really yellow?

Is it really yellow?

The brain is pretty easy to fool. It’s designed to interpret what we see, hear, and sense in other ways. By “interpret” we mean that it takes the data from the various input points and converts them into things that we can consciously comprehend. Take the image above, for example. It’s yellow, right? Well, not exactly, as the video below by VSauce explains. They go into other illusions and concepts as well which are equally interesting, but the explanation about real yellow versus the yellow we perceive on the screen is the real kicker. Enjoy! …

6 cool facts about Neil Armstrong

6 cool facts about Neil Armstrong

When celebrities die, we often get the disappointing surge of dirt and mud that shows that they may not have been as admirable as we once thought. It happened to Steve Jobs who was called many names we can’t mention in this blog. It happened in bulk to Michael Jackson, though he was having much of that mud slung while he was still alive; some of the mud was, indeed, fresh. For Neil Armstrong who died earlier this week, the stories coming out are different. He seems to have been pretty consistent with the way he handled the media, his activities, and his life in general. The man was a hero in more ways than one…

After 25 years, Microsoft finally changes up their look

Shutter speed synchronized with helicopter blades makes for one freaky video

Shutter speed synchronized with helicopter blades makes for one freaky video

It may be the coolest helicopter video you see all day. Here, the videographer has set the capture rate of the camera (what most consider the shutter speed though that’s not actually the case) to synchronize almost perfectly with the blades of the helicopter. The results are freaky to say the least. Needless to say, the video has gone viral. …

Robot servants are probably cheaper than you think

Robot servants are probably cheaper than you think

The concept of robots from the past has either centered around making mundane tasks of humanity easier or obsolete, or they tell us about the robot apocalypse where mechanized artificial intelligence takes over humanity and makes us their slaves (or food). The reality is that robots are able to do some cool things, albeit not nearly at the level that most thought possible by this time in history. Cleaning windows, mowing lawns, mopping floors – all is possible with robotic technology. The devices themselves are not that extraordinary, but the prices actually caught me by surprise. Here’s the…

Femto-photography: one trillion frames per second

Femto-photography: one trillion frames per second

What is femto-photography? According to Ramesh Raskar, it’s “a new imaging technique so fast that it creates slow motion video of light in motion.” His team at MIT developed the technology that can actually allow for cameras to see around corners or into objects without X-rays. The femto camera used in the demonstration is no ordinary camera, of course. It has a time resolution of 2 picoseconds, fast enough to see light travel 0.6 millimeters. It’s the type of technology that goes beyond what most perceive as possible. Here’s his TED video: …
