No iPad Tethering For iPhone

No iPad Tethering For iPhone

AT&T’s new 3G data plans have led some people to question whether this could mean tethering for iPads. The answer? Still a firm no, although AT&T says it’s really an Apple issue. It seemed logical to me from day one that the iPad would be a device you could carry around with you and access the web at will, but for iPhone users the added value would be the option to tether. To this day, the only way to tether an iPad to an iPhone is through jailbreaking. Of course, the iPad has only been on sale for 60 days, and iPhone OS 4.0 is coming soon, and the new iPhone 4G is due out on Monday, so nothing is ever certain….

HTC's EVO 4G Goes On Sale Today

The HTC EVO 4G goes on sale today, earning the honor of becoming America’s first 4G smartphone. Running the Android 2.1 platform with an impressive set of features including both front-facing and an 8 megapixel back-facing camera, GPS, a 1GHz CPU and the ability to output to 720p HD. The EVO is an impressive device, a sign that HTC and Google’s Android platform are deservedly gaining ground against Apple’s iPhone. But it might be a little early to celebrate. According to Electronista, the team that first gained root access to the HTC EVO have announced that Sprint’s customizations of Android have…

Apple Advocates HTML5 With A Safari-Only Showcase

Apple Advocates HTML5 With A Safari-Only Showcase

Apple has decided that actions speak louder than words or Thoughts on Flash, and has published an HTML5 showcase, advocating open web standards as the future of the web. The one touch of irony? The demos are Safari-only. While it’s clear the reason for this is that HTML5 is still in it’s infancy and support across varying browsers isn’t perfect, this might backfire and end up garnering support for Adobe’s Flash platform. The demos highlight the advanced features of HTML5, including video, typography, animations, transitions and 3D. Accessing the site in any browser other than Safari displays…

Another Day, Another Video Of The Supposed iPhone 4G Casing

Another Day, Another Video Of The Supposed iPhone 4G Casing

Am I the only one who is actually bored of seeing videos and posts containing parts and casings from the alleged next iPhone due out in June? When it comes to fanboyism, I’m a card-carrying member of the church of Jobs, but I’m actually fed up of reading about this stuff. At this point there has to be more iPhone 4G parts out in the wild than in Apple’s inventory. This latest yawnfest comes from iphoneportugal.com, reported without the broken English on Boy Genius Report. Does it not seem strange to anyone else that the iPhone 3GS was launched with almost no information beforehand except Apple’s approved…

Sony Revolutionizes Tweeting - For Cats

Sony Revolutionizes Tweeting - For Cats

Have you ever wished your pet could talk? What deep, philosophical thoughts would they express, how they would proclaim their deep and undying love for you and everything you are? Turns out they might just tell you that their food tastes good. Sony Computer Science Labs has demonstrated a system which they call ‘lifelogging for cats’, and sadly, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Kitty wears a device around its neck that picks up information about what the cat is doing, and sends the information to Twitter. If Fluffy is eating, walking or sleeping, this thing knows about it, and sends one of eleven…

Google Phasing Out Windows Use

Google Phasing Out Windows Use

There was a time when it was trendy to be a switcher, but it’s old news these days. Unless a huge organization like Google announces it is trying to limit the amount of new Windows installations within its company walls. After the Chinese hacking incident in January Google is tightening up security in a number of areas, one of which is the operating system of choice. New hires are now offered the choice of either Mac or Linux, with any request to use a Windows system having to be cleared through the company’s Chief Information Officer. Google’s announcement is sure to shake up the security debate again,…

Thinner Kindle Coming Soon?

Thinner Kindle Coming Soon?

Amazon may be working on a third Kindle model with a thinner form factor, sharper screen and more responsive screen. Amazon is putting its fingers in its ears on the subject of color touch-capable screens like the iPads, instead choosing to continue with the concept of a dedicated ebook reader with a paper-like grayscale screen. The Kindle 2 was debuted in February 2009 bringing improved battery life and an updated look, and Amazon continues to refine its only hardware offering. Ironically, the Kindle’s greatest competitor is itself, in the form of the Kindle App for iPad and iPhone. CEO Jeff…

French Artist Hovers Back To The Future

French Artist Hovers Back To The Future

A while ago, techi.com brought you a list of Back to the Future innovations we’re still waiting for. My personal favorite? The hoverboard. That’s why I couldn’t resist covering this story. French artist Nils Gaudagnin, clearly a fellow BTTF fan has created a real life replica of the hoverboard, from it’s gaudy pink design to the fact that it actual hovers. Wait, what?! That’s right, it actually hovers! Through some complicated and unexplained setup involved electromagnets, lasers and various other scientific doohickeys, Nils’ exhibit actually floats suspended in mid air, a feat sure to keep…

Geotagging Comes To High-End Nikon Cameras

Geotagging Comes To High-End Nikon Cameras

The world is quickly getting smaller and smaller, and one prominent area that’s helping this cause is geotagging, a GPS-based technology that adds location information to images and information posted online. The downside? Well, devices need to have GPS-aware technology, and even in today’s iWorld that’s still not ubiquitous. The GP-1 dongle changed that for Nikon DSLR users. The device fitted into the camera’s hot shoe, adding GPS capability to an otherwise location-unaware camera. Accessory maker Gisteq has one-upped Nikon with the PhotoTrackr Plus, a similar device that connects…

Skype 2.0 Finally Adds Voice Over 3G

Skype 2.0 Finally Adds Voice Over 3G

Skype has finally given the green light to voice calls over 3G with the new version of its Skype for iPhone software. iPhone users rejoice, you can finally actually use Skype’s software to make VoIP phone calls. Naturally, the news comes with the catch that it’s gonna cost you. Skype-to-Skype calls will be free – but only until the end of August. After that, a “small monthly charge” will be applied. So, to clarify, you spend a load of money on an iPhone, pay AT&T for data over 3G, then you pay Skype for the capability to make these calls.. on your phone. Confused? Not nearly as confused as your accountant…

Google's Lethal Beta Walking Directions

Google’s love of the beta tag for it’s software has been a thorn in some people’s sides, and has caused concern for businesses looking for rock solid, reliable solutions, but has the beta tag gone too far this time? Google Walking Directions, a beta feature of Google Maps is being blamed for causing a traffic accident after providing questionable directions that prompted the woman to walk down a road without sidewalks. The Walking Directions site contains a warning that the software is in beta, but since the woman accessed the site using a Blackberry the warning was not visible. Armed with only…
