Taking the

Taking the 'Cell' Out of 'Phone'

That iPhone, it’s a beast. A tiger within a kraken wrapped in a minotaur made of exploding gargoyles. Sometimes you wish you had a means of caging this unruly powerhouse. Tie it down. Chain it up out in the back yard, that sort of thing. Kee Utility has got a device for you. Coming straight outta the Retro Revival which began with videogames a few years ago and has since spread to all product sectors, this has got to be one of the sexier designs I’ve seen. I don’t think I need to explain it, but I will add it’s not only a corded phone/charging dock combo, but also can sync with iTunes via a built-in USB…

Get Screwed with The Tribulb

Get Screwed with The Tribulb

Continuing today’s apparent theme of excess, we have the Tribulb. It’s an ordinary LED lightbulb. That you plug in three times. How manly. You could call this design ‘versatile’, I guess, if nonsensically so. It looks really awesome in all sorts of cool setups (obligatory video below). Though, while granted these are LED lightbulbs, this probably isn’t the greenest or most sustainable use of a designer’s time. Could have been designing, like, a lightbulb that waters your plants or something. In any case, gone are the days of plugging something once – that isn’t nearly phallic…

This Man is Sitting On the Future of Commuting. Maybe.

This Man is Sitting On the Future of Commuting. Maybe.

There are painfully few options available to the trendy consumer who wants to look silly in transit. Unicycles take too much time and effort to learn. Hoverounds are for old ladies. Segways are just too silly – we’re trying to strike a balance, here, people. But now…now there is a way to look exactly one increment less ridiculous than on a Segway. Presenting…the YikeBike. Yeah, I don’t get it either. But it’s still a pretty neat idea. The Yike is all-electric, can go 6 miles on one charge (which sounds wimpy until you realize this is probably a bad choice for a long-distance road trip anyway),…

Device with Silly Name Attempts to Redefine Virtual Reality

Device with Silly Name Attempts to Redefine Virtual Reality

I’m not big on the whole 3D scene. Trying to fit awkward glasses over my regular ones isn’t exactly comfortable. Likewise, virtual reality is something I’m not too keen on (two words: Virtual Boy). But this, I like. The pCubee (yes, that’s “PEE-kyoo-bee”) is a new spin on an…uh…’old classic’. By utilizing five LCD screens strapped to a plastic cube and sensors worn on the head (think of your Wii, but backwards), the pCubee displays an interactive 3D diorama ‘inside’ the cube. The University of British Columbia, whose team designed this thing, are calling it FTVR, for…

STILL Need More Reasons Not To Buy an iPad?

STILL Need More Reasons Not To Buy an iPad?

Hey, did you catch the latest episode of Modern Family, that totally hip sitcom that rocks? No? Yeah, me neither. And now, I probably never will. Rule of thumb is that sitcoms tend to blow chimps by the herd, and last night the ABC turd made a legendary example of itself by becoming a 30-minute shameless commercial for the iPad. I don’t even know what to say about this. I’m a big fan of well-designed advertisements, but this is embarrassing and uncomfortable, even to watch alone. It fails as both an advertisement and entertainment. “Who’s ready for the first day of the rest of their lives?”…

The Only April Fool

The Only April Fool's Joke That Will Be Stuck In Your Head All Day

The only online April Fool’s joker that can compete with crowned prankster kings Google and Blizzard Entertainment has got to be IGN. While this isn’t the most believable prank you’ll see today, it’s the only one you’ll be singing to yourself for the next week. Possibly best-remembered for their 2008 Legend of Zelda movie trailer, which had the entire online gaming community convulsing in celebration before realizing it was all a beautiful lie, IGN brings you a sneak peek at Halo: The Bollywood Movie. I wish a big company like Microsoft would have a laugh and actually fund something…

Behind-The-Scenes with OK GO

Behind-The-Scenes with OK GO's Ridiculously Intricate Music Video

If you’re familiar with a thing called the Internet, doubtlessly you’ve recently bore witness to indie darlings OK GO and they’re latest insanely-choreographed music video. Y’know, the one with the Rube Goldberg Machine? If you haven’t yet, go watch it. Here, I linked it for you. No, really, go ahead. I’ll wait.   Cool (read: head-explodingly badass), right? Well, even cooler is that the band have now posted an interactive floorplan of the machine’s design on their website, and inquiring minds can take an interactive tour of the product of no doubt thousands of manhours….

Steel Mousepads Make YOUR Setup Look Totally Wimpy

Steel Mousepads Make YOUR Setup Look Totally Wimpy

Let me tell you about my rig. Seriously. Grab your milk and cookies, find a spot on the carpet, and let me tell you all about my rig. My rig’s a Mac Pro, Xeon Quadcore x2 with dual crossfired Radeon 4870s and 12 sweet gigs of RAM. My rig dual-boots to Windows 7. My rig runs Photoshop like a piece of goddam paper. My …mousepad is made of… I dunno, like, felt or something. My rig is a sissy girl. If Greensforged knows one thing, it’s that steel is awesome. Hell, it’s the first thing they declare on their website. And they offer the only thing that can truly make my rig truly manly – solid steel mousepads. Unnecessary?…

22 Megapixel Touchscreen Wall Allows Students to Pwn Noobs in HHHD

22 Megapixel Touchscreen Wall Allows Students to Pwn Noobs in HHHD

Yesterday was a day for robots; today is a day for things that don’t need to exist. A team of students a the University of Tromsø, Norway, have gone to the trouble of creating the means to play Quake, with their hands, on a wall. This is by no means not awesome, but one has to wonder why. One really, really has to wonder why. Alright, so really it’s just a proof of concept – there are plenty of reasons for displays this large to exise, and the video below proves that gigapixel photo navigation on a wall like this all but promises to make ‘travel’ a thing of the past.

Even now, the word is fading from…

But No Star Wars Reference? I

But No Star Wars Reference? I'm Not Impressed.

As a purveyor of offbeat geekery, I am absolutely obligated to show you this. Here’s a girl balancing 15 books on her head while reciting pi to the 100th digit and solving a Rubik’s Cube. Yep. That is all. …

'Gas-powered' Alarm Clock Beats the System

I really, really hope I never get audited like this. Surely you know of EnergyStar – if you’re a PC user, you probably see their logo every time you boot up your machine. They’re the guys in charge of setting up guidelines to regulate the power consumption and efficiency of products. Recently, a bunch of Congressional auditors went to work to test the thoroughness of the EnergyStar program. And they were hella sneaky about it. …If you can call this sneaky: they submitted a bunch of very-clearly-fake products for approval, including an ‘air purifier’ that consisted of a feather duster…

HP Brings Us One Step Closer to Taking Flexible Displays For Granted

HP Brings Us One Step Closer to Taking Flexible Displays For Granted

Flexible displays might be on the way and widely used sooner than we think.

Recently, HP unveiled a new idea in a demo of its flexible display technology. CTO Phil McKinney rolled up one of HP’s flexible displays…and it was immediately destroyed. “You’re probably good for about half a dozen times before the material will just fail,” explained McKinney. Uh, Phil? That doesn’t sound like progress. But that’s not the point. The displays aren’t meant to be rolled up – at least, not after the manufacturing process. What HP’s real goal is, is to produce a new, cost-effective…
