The Most Dangerous Website in 2010: Google

The Most Dangerous Website in 2010: Google

According to the security gurus Trend Micro, the most dangerous site on the net in 2010 was none other than google.com. Of course, no one would believe this out of hand – Google’s had its problems in the last year, what with user privacy snafus and other ballyhoo, but when you consider Google’s immense popularity, it becomes a different story. Factoring Google’s reputation as the (second-)most visited site on the net (Facebook passed it this past year), it is a prime target for blackhat SEO schemes, leading to all manner of malware and other threats. Naturally, it takes two to tango, and the user…

CR-48 Not Cutting the Mustard? Install Win7 or OS X!

CR-48 Not Cutting the Mustard? Install Win7 or OS X!

The reviews of Google’s Chrome OS have thus far been lukewarm at best, and tepid at worst – suffice it to say, no one really has strong feelings one way or the other. It’s doubtlessly cool, but most seem to agree that the majority of the public just isn’t ready to switch to computing on a cloud just yet. So now you’re sitting there with your CR-48, unsure of what to do. Why not install another operating system? Users at the Something Awful forums have figured it out, installing Windows 7 and OS X with little ease – assuming of course that you file removing the CR-48′s finicky bottom panel in order to properly…

Apple Attempts Avoidance of Antennagate 2 with New Patent

Apple Attempts Avoidance of Antennagate 2 with New Patent

Antennagate sure was a mess, wasn’t it? Maybe ‘mess’ is the wrong word. All things considered, it was pretty tidy mess, and even included sweet pictures of Apple’s underground antenna testing crypts. Was it the biggest case of mass hysteria the tech world has ever seen? Could’ve been – but either way, according to this new patent, it seems Apple isn’t taking any chances. The patent details a new design that would apparently render the Apple logo itself as a functional antenna in both iOS and Mac devices – a move that could more or less end any to all interference by our fat, sausagey fingers. How well…

Happy Holidays, from SCIENCE!!

Happy Holidays, from SCIENCE!!

As a Canadian, I am well-versed in the art of snowcraft. The frozen North tempers us with flakey hides of frost-resistant skin-maille as we build our monolithic winter totems, which you in warmer climates dare mock as ‘snow-men’. May a thousand seals feast happily on your remains. Hey, speaking of snowmen, science recently decided to continue its campaign against human limits by creating the world’s smallest one – and you can be sure this won’t be a record beaten anywhere in the near future. At 10µm (that’s ‘micrometers’, but I prefer the phoenetic ‘moo-meters’), this little dude is 1/5th the…

Obama Name-Drops Jobs As

Obama Name-Drops Jobs As 'Incentive'

In a speech yesterday, Mr. President took a moment to give Big Steve some props, citing him as an example of someone whom Americans should ‘expect to be rich’. An example of modern wealth. What is…a fact is that people in the top 1 percent, people in the top one-tenth of 1 percent, or one-hundredth of 1 percent have a larger share of income and wealth than any time since the 1920s. Those are just facts. That’s not a feeling on the part of Democrats. Those are facts. And something that’s always been the greatest strength of America is a thriving, booming middle class, where everybody has got a shot…

Japanese Researchers Create Tweeting Mouse

Japanese Researchers Create Tweeting Mouse

Alright, before you read too far into that headline, let me immediately reassure you that we’re not talking about that kind of tweet. Indeed, a mouse that could post inane quips and lulzy links to Tweetdeck would be a marvel of science indeed, but this is infinitely more basic (and infinitely more complex). Science hath wrought a mouse that quite literally tweets. Like a bird. The absolutely adorable mouse came about purely by chance, as researchers at the University of Osaka carried out their ‘Evolved Mouse Project’, which had them breeding mutation-prone mice willy-nilly, unsure of what the…

First Photograph of Non-Existent iPad Mini Will Make You Believe... Or Not

Oh, hi there. Remember that 7-inch iPad? Here’s a photograph of Taiwanese pop idol Jimmy Lin holding one. Yeah, I’m not buying it either. With all the trash talk Steve’s been giving the rumoured ‘Pad, it’s highly unlikely it could even survive at this point, if released. But that won’t stop the ‘evidence’ from leaking in from all sides, including what I can only assume is this photoshopped image. Apparently, there are more details on Lin’s blog, but sadly, I only speak one language. Good luck….

UK Teens Buy Their Own Songs 6000 Times, Make Almost A Million Bucks

UK Teens Buy Their Own Songs 6000 Times, Make Almost A Million Bucks

Say what you will about these kids’ moral characters, but this is kind of clever. Uploading music to the iTunes store, a group of UK teens has been accused of using stolen credit cards to download their own tracks thousands of times – ultimately reaping almost £500,000 (almost $775,000!) in royalties. One teen has already claimed responsibility for 2000 of the 6000 song downloads, and the rest of the group is slated to appear in court beginning January 25th. Like I said – I don’t pretend to endorse the actions of these kids. Credit card fraud is bad, and wrong, and all that. But damn, as far as iTunes…

The Good, The Bad, and the Mobile

The Good, The Bad, and the Mobile

From the file labelled ‘stuff you didn’t expect to hear about today’ comes this puzzler: LG has announced that it’s teaming up with film score icon Ennio Morricone to produce exclusive ringtones and music for its devices. The music will come preloaded on LG’s entire range of smartphones, beginning with the Optimus 2X, and will feature 10 Morricone classics, as well as 15 new pieces developed specifically for LG. For those of you who aren’t hip to Morricone, he’s an extremely influential legend in the world of composing. Hell, I thought he was dead until wikipedia-ing him a couple minutes ago. Even…

World's Biggest iPhone Erected in Honour of.... Lara Croft??

The iPad gets a bad rap from some people for being nothing but a ‘giant iPhone’. And really, that’s a little hard to deny – it sort of is. But the iPad’s got nothin’ on this. Behold, the world’s largest iPhone. Made of 56 iPads chugging away in tandem, this monolithic wall of iOS was erected to celebrate the coming of the new Tomb Raider game, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, to the App Store. Why Lara Croft is getting shrines like this erected in her honour in 2010 is baffling, but hey – a giant iPhone is awesome any way you slice it. Hee hee, ‘erect’….

Eat Your Heart Out, Kinect - Robot Arm Mimics Your Gestures

Eat Your Heart Out, Kinect - Robot Arm Mimics Your Gestures

How cool is this? The answer, before you read any further or watch the video for additional information, is this: really cool. The Biological Cybernetics Lab at Tsukuba University here demonstrate a robotic arm that mimics a user’s movement via Kinect-like camera. It can recognize over 100 different hand shapes (after all, some of us, myself included, have pretty weird hands), and checks over one hundred times per second what position your hand is in, so it can adjust itself accordingly. The idea is not only to provide a real-time robotic control solution, but also an intuitive way to program…

Gmail Gets Merry: Free Calling FOREVER... Maybe

Gmail Gets Merry: Free Calling FOREVER... Maybe

Hey, remember how much Gmail Calling happened to rock? Where Skype would have us toss them our spare change to call phones, Gmail flipped the proverbial bird, allowing this service for free… until the end of 2010. Well, the end is nigh, and many of us, myself included, are sitting cold and alone, making :( faces at our screens. But lo! Google’s not done with the bird-flipping just yet. In the spirit of givings most rad, we’re being given free Gmail calling for another full year, and that may not even be the end of it – Google states that if international calling can cover domestic ones, we might see free…
