Apple created a waiting list for law enforcement requests to decrypt seized iPhones

Apple created a waiting list for law enforcement requests to decrypt seized iPhones

It isn’t easy for anyone, even law enforcement agencies like the ATF, to break into an encrypted iPhone. They are often forced to look for help from Apple itself. The rise in requests from law enforcement agencies has compelled the Cupertino company to create a waiting list to get to the data of alleged bad guys. Currently, that means 7 weeks or more before requests can be fulfilled. According to CNET: An agent at the ATF, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, “contacted Apple to obtain assistance in unlocking the device,” U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell wrote in a…

3 quick iPhone hacks that you probably didn't know

The iPhone has been blazing trails in the smartphone industry for 5 years now. It’s domination has been threatened lately by the rise of Android devices, particularly those of their arch-enemy, Samsung. Hacks are good and every phone has them. These are the tricks that got lost in the shuffle or were intentionally left in the small print of the instruction manuals that few people actually read, so they don’t get used as much. The three highlighted by Hack College are ones that are brand new… to you, at least. Okay, so you may have known one or two of them, but unless you’re a major iPhone geek or guru,…

Is the end of the Apple era starting?

Is the end of the Apple era starting?

It’s easy to point fingers. It doesn’t take a genius to look at trends and start spouting doom and gloom. When Apple is concerned, it’s even easier, almost wanted, as the company has enjoyed golden child status for several years now. For the first time in a decade, Apple had a quarter that showed negative growth. That alone is not necessarily a telling sign; companies can only continue to show positive numbers for so long. There’s simply no way to sustain it indefinitely and a decade is a long time. However, when you look at the other things that have been happening lately, it’s not out of the realm of…

Who

Who's really winning between iOS and Android?

This is one of the silliest questions that constantly gets asked on tech blogs and is often answered by infographics. The truth is this: nobody really cares.  It’s a personal choice. Some are extremely loyal to the brand or operating system that they prefer. Most are open to whatever makes the most sense to them. Still, the question will be asked and blogs will attempt to answer it. Which major mobile operating system is winning the war, iOS or Android? Here’s another shot at answering the question, looking at some of the important numbers including activations, fragmentation, and owner satisfaction….

It's best to leave some web forms blank

Whether it’s because they really didn’t want to have the iPod they ordered online engraved or if they saw this post on Buzzfeed a couple of years ago and thought it would be a great novelty item to carry around with them, someone did it again with their iPod order. “No thanks. I don’t want my iPod engraved.” In a world where automation is in order processing is the key to success for companies like Apple and Amazon, one should just leave forms like these blank rather than leave instructions that only humans can comprehend. Don’t kid yourself. There’s no human on the other end of the form. It’s only the Matrix…

Getting a job at Apple - advice from those who did it

Getting a job at Apple - advice from those who did it

There are certain teams that are considered “dream jobs” by those who enter a field. Baseball players often dream of playing for the Yankees. Children of farmers who go to school for engineering often dream of working for John Deere. Tech geeks dream of working for Apple. Despite the tremendous size of the company, getting in isn’t easy. They’re always hiring, but they’re also always bombarded with resumes from the most talented people in technology. How does one make themselves stand out when fighting against such odds? The best answers always come from those who actually did it. In this case,…

Will Apple stock fall below $400?

Will Apple stock fall below $400?

If you would have asked any stock analyst in the world back in September when Apple shares were sitting at $705 if shares had a chance of falling below $400 within six months, they would have admonished you for being a moron. It wasn’t going to happen. It couldn’t. Now that we’re five months out from the peak of Apple’s value, it seems that $400 isn’t such an impossible number after all. The stock closed yesterday at $430.47, down $10.93 from the day before to reach its lowest point since the slide started last September. It seems that Apple may have fallen victim to their own hype machine in many ways….

The iWatch isn

The iWatch isn't even real yet and there's already a video showing how to improve it

Apple certainly knows how to spark innovation outside of itself. Nobody outside of the lowest dungeon levels in Cupertino has any idea what the iWatch will be or if it really will actually become a reality any time soon, but that doesn’t stop artists from making concept designs, bloggers from speculating, and YouTube users from improving on it. One such user is FinalCutKing and the concept they’ve come up with is nothing short of mind blowing. It takes the basics that we assume from a hypothetical iWatch and expands it into the realm of Minority Report and beyond. Check out the video and then see some…

Leap Wireless shows the iPhone still can

Leap Wireless shows the iPhone still can't be popular for low income consumers

Hindsight is 20/20, or so they say. This is important for Leap Wireless as it seems on the surface that their failure to sell a no-contract iPhone was a doomed concept from the start. Last year, the company became the first pay-as-you-go carrier to offer the Apple iPhone. Now, they’re on pace to sell half of the iPhones they committed to sell by June. This means they could get stuck with around $100 million in hardware with no way to get ride of them easily. The obvious reason this didn’t work is the target. Pay-as-you-go carriers focus on lower income or poor credit consumers. These consumers are less…

Is this the iWatch patent?

Is this the iWatch patent?

AppleInsider has uncovered a patent filing that points to a flexible touchscreen watch design. If you don’t think this is the new rumored iWatch, you’re missing some brain cells. As we pointed out the other day, there are plenty of rumors and concept designs behind the device, but this is the first time we’ve seen an Apple stamp associated with one. The images may not be as hip or cool, but they may just be real. According to the source: Apple first filed its application for a “Bi-stable spring with flexible display” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in August of 2011, describing a wearable…

7 iWatch concepts and why most of them won

7 iWatch concepts and why most of them won't work for Apple

As we said when we first brought up the rumor, the Apple iWatch represents a much-needed infusion of fresh technology to help the mega-company get out of it’s creativity- and stock-rut. Shares have been falling. Sentiment has been waning. They need a winning idea and the iWatch is probably their next big one. As with all things Apple, many talented designers took to their computers to conceptualize the next Apple product. We’ve seen some entertaining renditions of iPhones and iPads over the years, but this is the first truly unique gadget that the company has worked on in a long time. Here are some…

Apple rumored to be hitting the wearable computers arena with the iWatch

Apple rumored to be hitting the wearable computers arena with the iWatch

The first “computer” watches were pretty basic by today’s standards, but they launched a concept that has never been fulfilled. The idea of wearing your gadgets is something that was promised by James Bond, Michael Knight, and most recently Google, but Apple might finally deliver with the rumored iWatch. Employees at Apple told Bloomberg that it’s well beyond the concept phase, even beyond the experimental phase with around 100 product designers working on a wearable piece of tech that can do many of the things that the iPhone and iPad do today. A rumor like this couldn’t have come at a better time….
