Will unlimited data plans give the Sprint iPhone enough for conquest sales?

Will unlimited data plans give the Sprint iPhone enough for conquest sales?

There is little doubt that when Sprint begins servicing iPhones, current Sprint customers will switch to it. The real question that must be answered to determine Sprint’s long-term future is whether or not they’ll get conquest sales from Verizon and AT&T. Rumors have been circulating about unlimited data plans since it was first discovered that Sprint would be getting the iPhone. Many believe it’s the only way they can turn this into a successful move; investors are already worried. They need a big win or the gamble they’ve made by betting so much on a successful iPhone could crush the company….

Further proof that Apple can predict the future: Siri, 1987

Further proof that Apple can predict the future: Siri, 1987

Apple has often been noted as having the uncanny ability to see into their future. It isn’t simply having products that are ahead of their time. It’s about having a vision that can come true. On today, the day that Steve Jobs died, let’s take a look at one of the most profound examples of Apple’s predictive abilities. In 1987, Apple produced a video that described the “Knowledge Navigator”, a virtual personal assistant that worked through voice commands to perform many different tasks such as scheduling, searching for things, and contacting people. Siri, previewed yesterday by Apple as part of…

Steve Jobs has died

Steve Jobs has died

Apple Inc co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has passed away. He was 56. The statement was made by Apple. He spent the last several years leading the company to be one of the world’s largest while fighting a rare form of pancreatic cancer. He resigned in late August. Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple….

Tech jobs in high demand as the talent wars heat up

Tech jobs in high demand as the talent wars heat up

The down economy is keeping many people across America and the world unemployed. One area that is not seeing the same challenges is the high-end tech industry. Companies like Apple are hiring and they’re willing to pay big bucks for those who have the right stuff. According to recent research, nearly 1 in 4 young professionals want to work at Google. Fewer than 1 in every 250 applicants will ever end up working there, but with the right skills and the right approach, a coveted Google job could be yours. That is, at least, what this infographic is telling us. Created by: Masters Degree…

Roger Ebert

Roger Ebert's "voice" comes from Apple (with help from his friends)

The TED2011 Conference unveiled new technologies, encouraged imagination, and highlighted innovation as some of the most brilliant minds in the world converged to discuss everything from the seemingly mundane to the biggest problems plaguing the globe today. On the last day, emotions were touched by film critic Roger Ebert as he, his wife, his friends, and his Macbook moved the audience in ways they did not expect. For months I’ve been combing through various TED Talks from this year’s conference. The best was the very last one. “These are my words but this is not my voice,” the computer voice…

If you want a definitive iPhone news leak, go to Al Gore

If you want a definitive iPhone news leak, go to Al Gore

The rumormill is always hard at work for (or against) Apple, particularly when it comes to imminent iPhone releases. Journalists turned to the most reliable leak on the Apple board, former Vice President Al Gore, to confirm some of what many have already speculated. There will be multiple iPhones released in October. Whether that means simply that more than one iPhone 5 will be produced or that there are multiple models being launched is still up in the air, but most are latching on to the latter possibility since it’s more newsworthy. While at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in Johannesburg,…

MadPad helps make music... even at the hardware store

MadPad helps make music... even at the hardware store

With about a million iPad apps and a billion iPhone apps available, finding good ones isn’t hard. Finding ones that stand out from the crowd often is. If you like making music but don’t necessarily have “skills” with instruments, MadPad is an iPhone or iPad app that can help. No skill required – just bring your imagination and creativity. “Remix your life” is their way of putting it. By sampling everyday sounds and using a slick interface to put them together into music, even the most mundane places like hardware stores can be used to create music. Check it out: …

The textbook of the future

The textbook of the future

While many have a soft spot for the feel of the printed page, it’s hard to see a future where textbooks aren’t delivered to students digitally. It’s not just the benefit of taking the literal weight of textbooks off students’ backs — digital textbooks offer an opportunity to enhance the entire learning experience. The infographic below explores these possibilities. Even calling them “possibilities” is likely incorrect. As things go, it is inevitable that we’ll have schools going paper-free before we have mainstream flying cars. Damn you, science! Click to enlarge. Via: Online Education…

Apple wants its lost iPhone 5, by Conan O

Apple wants its lost iPhone 5, by Conan O'Brien

Last month, reports started circulating that Apple had lost another iPhone prototype in a bar. This time, it was an iPhone 5, the highly-anticipated next smartphone in the iPhone line. Comedian Conan O’Brien and his team put together a skit about Apple’s “response” to the person or people who currently have possession of the device. It is done very well in proper Apple video advertising style, only with the necessary injections of O’Brien humor. …

Will Microsoft hit the tablet market too late?

Will Microsoft hit the tablet market too late?

Bill Gates and Microsoft had the right idea a decade ago when they first started releasing tablet PCs to the market. They were clunky, too expensive, and the company didn’t improve them over the years. As a result, they missed the flood when Apple turned the tablet valve to full blast a year and a half ago. Microsoft is ready to jump in, but is it too late? Next week, Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows Division for Microsoft, is expected to show an early version of a tablet-enabled operating system code-named (wait for it) Windows 8. There was a lot of excitement when the first of a series of videos…

AOL and Yahoo! are run very differently from Microsoft and Google

AOL and Yahoo! are run very differently from Microsoft and Google

It’s a matter of class. Apple and Google have traveled different paths on their road to success. Both have overcome challenges that could have tanked most tech companies in their early (Google) and middle (Apple) days as companies. Both have had strong leadership – Steve Jobs at Apple and most of the executive team at Google – that has kept them on course despite the challenges. Both make good decisions and bad decisions, but it is in adversity that the the true heart of the companies come out. For Apple, they were on the edge of the abyss when they swallowed their pride and brought back Steve Jobs a few…

Android, iOS approach 70% combined smartphone market share

Android, iOS approach 70% combined smartphone market share

The drive towards domination of the smartphone market continues for Apple and Google as they approach a combined 70% choke hold. Symbian is all but non-existent, holding on to just under 2%. Microsoft has been unable to break the 6% barrier but hopes that they will be able to do so with the release of Windows 8. RIM is still in the race, though hope is growing dim. Still, they are over 20%, a mark that most expected them to sink below in the most recent report. Blackberry has lost 4% since April….
