How Google Can Save... Sony? Yes, Sony.

How Google Can Save... Sony? Yes, Sony.

Though it may now be hard to remember, there was a time that Sony was the company that led the tech world. Sony, after all, were the people who helped bring us the Walkman and the CD player. For years, the Sony brand was synonymous with cutting edge technology and sophisticated design. But while Sony are still a powerhouse in the world of tech, it’s now common knowledge they are no longer its leaders. We all know why: their commitment to closed, proprietary technology hurt them immensely in the internet age and now, other more web-savvy companies dominate our  new media world. Apple are now the go-to…

Arduino, Wii, Korg, and iPad Come Together In the Name of Funk

Arduino, Wii, Korg, and iPad Come Together In the Name of Funk

You can thank YouTube user Denkitribe for the fattest beats you’re going to hear today. Like, unless you listen to fat beats for a living. Then there’s every chance you’ll hear something fatter. Either way, this still rules. Denki has taken an Arduino unit (of course he has, hasn’t he), a Wii nunchuk, an iPad running Korg’s iELECTRIBE app, and has used them all to totally rock the brand new Korg Monotron. I’m not even gonna bother talking much about this. Just hit play and have a light switch rave as some of the best recent technologies come together in one supercollision of rad. [Via SlashGear]…

iPad Used for Surgery in Japan Less Than a Week After Launch. Ouch.

iPad Used for Surgery in Japan Less Than a Week After Launch. Ouch.

Man, I always hate to come off as an Apple fanboy (that, when I’m not coming off as a cranky Apple hater), especially where the iPad is concerned. I don’t want to buy one; I want a computer, thanks, not the adult version of an early-childhood activity center. That being said, though, almost every day I hear tell of some nifty new use for an iPad. I can’t just not show you guys neat stuff, I guess. Which brings me to this post. Japan adapted the iPad with almost untold zeal, and get this: they’re already using it for surgery. Is that even…? Like, this is only a week later. I would not trust my life to my surgeon’s…

Magazines On Your iPad? It

Magazines On Your iPad? It'll cost ya

With the death of print in full swing with the popularity of e-books and e-newspapers on the rise, magazines will now be making the leap to the iPad. The price will be much more than their ink and paper ancestors. A new post from AdAge has posted the magazine pricing for the iPad, and it doesn’t look good for the tech-savvy reader hoping to transfer all his or her subscriptions over to Apple’s device. We’ll start out with some comparisons; a year of Popular Mechanics will cost you only $12 for the magazine to be delivered in its original print format but to get it on your iPad it will cost you more than…

Merlin Experiences the Magic of iPad

Merlin Experiences the Magic of iPad

When Techi’s Ransler Dier posted a waterproof case for the iPad that renders it fully-functional in extraordinarily moist environments (including but not limited to underwater) I, like you, scratched my head, knowing full well it could never find a use in the real world. Oh. You’re looking at Merlin in this photo. No, no, the dolphin, not the guy with the beard. The bearded one is Jack Kassewitz, a researcher with SpeakDolphin.com, and Jack is helping Merlin speak through the magic of the iPad. Yeah, that’s right. We’re no longer the only species using computers. “The use of the iPad is part of our…

Another Day, Another Video Of The Supposed iPhone 4G Casing

Another Day, Another Video Of The Supposed iPhone 4G Casing

Am I the only one who is actually bored of seeing videos and posts containing parts and casings from the alleged next iPhone due out in June? When it comes to fanboyism, I’m a card-carrying member of the church of Jobs, but I’m actually fed up of reading about this stuff. At this point there has to be more iPhone 4G parts out in the wild than in Apple’s inventory. This latest yawnfest comes from iphoneportugal.com, reported without the broken English on Boy Genius Report. Does it not seem strange to anyone else that the iPhone 3GS was launched with almost no information beforehand except Apple’s approved…

Taking a Leisurely Swim With Your iPad? There

Taking a Leisurely Swim With Your iPad? There's a Cover For That.

Waterwear is a plastic bag that you can put your iPad into allowing for heavy iPad use on the beach, in the kitchen, by the pool and even in the shower or bubble bath. Why is it cool? It allows for full iPad functionality in all elements and comes with a handy strap for those who can’t unhook from technology long enough to take a shower. I can see using this at the beach reading it but I can’t imagine walking in on someone sitting under the showerhead with their iPad in hand. I wonder if this new iPad condom will ship with a voucher for group therapy sessions for those who cannot put their device down. Enough…

New Skype iPhone App Allows Calls over 3G

New Skype iPhone App Allows Calls over 3G

Skype has launched a new version of its client software for Apple’s iPhone 3G allowing users who have downloaded the app to make calls to other Skype users on the 3G network. The best part? The service remains free at least until the end of this year. Skype announced on Sunday that the new app is available for the 3G iPhone and that Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi will remain free until after the end of 2010. Skype has also said that they have not yet decided on what to charge for the calls. With the new software, owners of the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and the second and third generations of the iPod…

The Next Apple TV May Cost $99 and Not Suck

The Next Apple TV May Cost $99 and Not Suck

Now this is interesting. Hey, remember Apple TV? No, I don’t blame you. Man, Apple TV sucked so hard. Apparently, though, that won’t be the case forever – sources of Engadget have whispered some sweet nothings about the next iteration of Apple’s crappiest product (presently), and it’s sounding pretty erotic from where I’m sitting. Like, I’m thinking of inviting this thing back to my place for some drinks. The main point is that for all intents and purposes, Apple TV II will be a screenless iPhone 4, with identical hardware, save for 1080p capability. It’ll even be running the iPhone OS. For a TV experience,…

Apple Sells Two Million iPads in Less Than 60 Days

Apple Sells Two Million iPads in Less Than 60 Days

That’s a lot of iPads in not a lot of days, kids. “Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Big Stevey J of the achievement. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.” iPad fever shows no signs of slowing down, and I’m sure this won’t be the last jaw-dropping sales figure we’re going to see. I really wish Jobs would stop calling the thing ‘magical’ – surely he’s aware at this point it’s one of the most snicker-worthy tech branding memes since Nintendo announced the Wii would be called the Wii….

The iPhone Revolver - This Will Only End In Tears

The iPhone Revolver - This Will Only End In Tears

Oh, for the love of– Well, this is cute. Seems juniortan of Thingiverse has decided it’s a good idea for us to start carrying our iPhones around inside gun-shaped cases. Using a 3D printer, Tan has replicated a Ruger LCR that fits your iPhone and, from a reasonable distance, looks too authentic not to get you accidentally gunned down in the middle of the street. Tan has posted the necessary files for anyone with access to a 3D printer to go nuts and build their own, but for crap’s sake, people, can we please be careful, here? I know I usually champion over-manly tech accessories, but this is getting out…

Skype 2.0 Finally Adds Voice Over 3G

Skype 2.0 Finally Adds Voice Over 3G

Skype has finally given the green light to voice calls over 3G with the new version of its Skype for iPhone software. iPhone users rejoice, you can finally actually use Skype’s software to make VoIP phone calls. Naturally, the news comes with the catch that it’s gonna cost you. Skype-to-Skype calls will be free – but only until the end of August. After that, a “small monthly charge” will be applied. So, to clarify, you spend a load of money on an iPhone, pay AT&T for data over 3G, then you pay Skype for the capability to make these calls.. on your phone. Confused? Not nearly as confused as your accountant…
