How the Blackberry Can Get Its Mojo Back

How the Blackberry Can Get Its Mojo Back

Though still successful, Blackberry is no longer the must-have gadget for the mobile crowd. What do they need to do to reclaim their position of leadership? Once upon a time, not so long ago, to own a Blackberry wasn’t to simply own a smartphone – it was to possess a symbol. Carrying around a Blackberry meant you were a successful, busy person, often ahead of the curve and definitely on top of your game. Oh my, how times have changed. While you could hardly argue that Research in Motion, the makers of the Blackberry, are doing poorly, it would be equally mistaken to say Blackberries are still the symbol…

Rhapsody Gets Music Onto Apple Devices Without the AppStore

Rhapsody Gets Music Onto Apple Devices Without the AppStore

Rhapsody has come out with an updated version of their App for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The application is free to download onto your device but you must have a subscription to use it. With this new version you can listen to the Rhapsody playlist that you have created while being connected to the Internet and also download songs to local storage. This means that you can listen to your music while being in such places as an elevator or subway that has no Internet access. This is a first for Apple to allow a third-party music subscription to allow songs to be downloaded in the U.S. They have a music…

Israel Now Welcoming The iPad

Israel Now Welcoming The iPad

Starting today, Israel is reversing its ban on Apple’s iPad. The device was previously banned amid questions of the devices compliance with Israel’s laws and requirements for wireless power output. Israel’s Minister of Communications stated that after intensive technical scrutiny, the device would no longer be confiscated by customs officials. “Starting Sunday we will begin allowing iPads into the country” said Moshe Kakhlon. The ban was based on suspicions that the iPad interfered with the wireless capability of other equipment. The Ministry also authorized the release of twenty iPads…

Police Ready To Investigate iPhone Prototype Theft

Police Ready To Investigate iPhone Prototype Theft

The legality of Gizmodo’s iPhone Prototype scoop may at last catch up with them as police begin investigating the theft. The issue has been debated back and forth all week on the web, with some commenters saying the prototype was straight up stolen, and others saying Gizmodo acted inside the letter of the law. The iPhone 4G prototype was “found” in a bar in Santa Clara, then sold by an unknown party to Gizmodo for a $5000 fee. California’s laws on property loss regarding this matter seems less than clear, but it is clear that whoever found the phone could have done more to return it to its rightful owner….

OS X 10.7 To Adopt iPhone-Style App Store

OS X 10.7 To Adopt iPhone-Style App Store

The rumors are beginning to circulate about Mac OS X 10.7, Apple’s next major update to its Mac operating system. Software company Rixstep says developers should be prepared for a Mac experience similar to the iPhone and now iPad method of developing and distributing apps. With the full designation as yet unknown (Lion? Bobcat? Tabby?), 10.7 is expected to bring a face lift to Apple’s ex-flagship OS, but other details remain unknown. Rixstep says that “10.7 will have kernel support for (‘insistence on’) binaries signed with Apple’s root certificate”. Roughly translated, this means that…

Photobooth software gives the world costume ideas for Halloween.

Photobooth software gives the world costume ideas for Halloween.

Everyone has used or seen the photos created by using the Photobooth software on any Mac computer. You sit there, and with the click of a button, your face is automatically distorted, warped, twirled and more. It’s definitely amusing for ten minutes or so. Designer, Mark Pernice of Brooklyn, decided he wanted to stretch that ten minutes of amusement and transform a photo into real life. He used the Photobooth software to capture a distorted photo of himself and made his captured face into a mask that incredibly matches the photo. (Some people just have way too much time on their hands). I wonder if…

Blu-Ray Players Use Apple Devices as Remote Controls

Blu-Ray Players Use Apple Devices as Remote Controls

Pioneer announced their new line of Blu-ray players yesterday. These new models are exactly the same as older versions, except for one new detail. The new line is now able to be controlled with an app on your iPhone or  iPod Touch. Along with Pioneer’s free iControlAV app, users can connect to their network and control the device’s many functions. This new feature is basically the same as using a remote control, but with a modern twist. Remotes get lost in the couch or deprogrammed. Having this app as a back-up might be a good idea when you’re too lazy to get up and manually change the channels. If being…

Alan Kay Notebook Guru Takes Scratch To Apple

Alan Kay Notebook Guru Takes Scratch To Apple

He may have predicted that Apple’s iPad would ‘rule the world’, but the man who invented the notebook concept isn’t happy with Steve Jobs at the moment. Alan Kay is one of the great heroes of the technological revolution we’re still experiencing today. So much so that when Apple introduced the iPad, Jobs took pains to send Kay one as a personal gift. But it isn’t the product that Kay has a problem with – it’s Apple’s determination to control what developers do with it. Apple last week changed the terms of its deal with developers, introducing new clauses which forbid iPhone apps from…

Adobe Pans Its Flash For iPhone Backdoor Plan

Adobe Pans Its Flash For iPhone Backdoor Plan

Adobe has ceased development of its tools to export Flash content into a format suitable for the iPhone. “We will still be shipping the ability to target the iPhone and iPad in Flash CS5,” said Adobe’s Mike Chambers. “However, we are not currently planning any additional investments in that feature.” Apple CEO Steve Jobs has previously slammed Adobe as “lazy” and Flash as unsuitable for use on mobile devices. Apple has not enabled Flash playback on the iPhone, pushing the open HTML 5 standard instead. Adobe’s announced cessation of development follows Apple’s decision…
