Adobe And Google = Apple.. Kinda

Adobe And Google = Apple.. Kinda

Adobe and Google, sitting in a tree.. Since Apple’s CEO publicly and thoughtfully destroyed Flash’s chances of ever making it to the iPhone or iPad, Adobe has been looking for a kindred spirit who will champion the need for Flash on a mobile device. A while back we saw a demonstration of Adobe’s 10.1 Flash mobile player running on a Nexus One, but today the plot thickens considerably. Most people now understand that the barriers to Flash on smartphones are at least genuine, legitimate concerns, but what about a tablet device? Who else but Google could Adobe turn to? If the enemy of my enemy is my friend,…

Google Chrome Versus Potato, Lightning and Sound

Google Chrome Versus Potato, Lightning and Sound

The speed tests in the above video were filmed at actual browser rendering times. Here is a list of the equipment used, courtesy of the Youtube page that the video is hosted on: – Computer: MacBook Pro laptop with Windows installed – Monitor – 24″ Asus: We had to replace the standard fluorescent backlight with very large tungsten fixtures to funnel in more light to capture the screen. In addition, we flipped the monitor 180 degrees to eliminate a shadow from the driver board and set the system preferences on the computer to rotate 180 degrees. No special software was used in this process. – 15Mbps Internet…

Building the Google Killer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Building the Google Killer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Google is the greatest company on Earth. So if someone plans to dethrone the greatest company on our small planet, it’s going to require more than a vision and a good work ethic. It requires doing things that the average human is not capable of doing. Quite frankly, you might need to be inhuman to do this. This is why I proudly present my personal step-by-step guide to building the Google killer for the more human-like individuals. This is a collection of thoughts and insights that I believe contain all the actions necessary to bring down the Google empire. So let’s jump right into it. Step 1: ‘Nut Up…

Who Will Win The Battle Over Open Web Video?

Who Will Win The Battle Over Open Web Video?

With Apple and Microsoft committed to one side, and Mozilla and Google committed to another, are consumers stuck in the middle again? A few years ago, in the battle between two standards for high-def video, one format seemed superior and more consumer-friendly: it could be manufactured in the same plants as DVDs; it used the better ‘VC-1′ compression; all its technical standards were in place; and it was a little cheaper. That format, of course, was HD-DVD. But because of some backroom deals and the fact Blu-Ray was put into the Playstation 3, HD-DVD lost. Though we were glad to have the battle over,…

Google Buys Israeli Widget Factory

Google Buys Israeli Widget Factory

We all know Google staff get to spend 10 percent of their time working on their own projects, and we know Google to be a search, mobile and ads sales business with a plethora of hobbies, but now it looks like the giant firm wants to bring in even more engineers, making a deal to buy Israeli Web gadgets provider LabPixies. Israeli financial news website TheMarker said Google paid $25 million for LabPixies, a developer of virtual gadgets ranging from calendars, news feeds and to-do lists to entertainment and games . The company was one of the first to begin development of personalized Web gadgets (aka:…

How the Blackberry Can Get Its Mojo Back

How the Blackberry Can Get Its Mojo Back

Though still successful, Blackberry is no longer the must-have gadget for the mobile crowd. What do they need to do to reclaim their position of leadership? Once upon a time, not so long ago, to own a Blackberry wasn’t to simply own a smartphone – it was to possess a symbol. Carrying around a Blackberry meant you were a successful, busy person, often ahead of the curve and definitely on top of your game. Oh my, how times have changed. While you could hardly argue that Research in Motion, the makers of the Blackberry, are doing poorly, it would be equally mistaken to say Blackberries are still the symbol…

Google Begins Rolling Out New Logo and Changes

Google Begins Rolling Out New Logo and Changes

Google is now rolling out subtle changes to their look and feel and site updates to some regions. Google, well known for their simple homepage and only minor, occasional revisions have been experimenting with slight changes to their logo and the layout of their search pages. The new logo uses brighter colours with a less emphasized bevel and drop shadow. Changes to search pages include more consistent hyperlink appearances, a cleaner, leaner sidebar, with icons to assist users looking to refine searches. Google is well known for its overly logical approach to design. Douglas Bowman, now at…

3D views of New York City using Google Earth.

3D views of New York City using Google Earth.

Ever had a dream to walk through Times Square in New York City, but could never really find the money to get you there? Google has recently added high quality street level photos to its Google Earth application that will allow you to take a virtual 3D tour of the city from the comfort of your own home. I know its not the same as being there, but not only do you see images of what New York looks like, you feel as though you are the main character in a Grand Theft Auto video game while scouring through the city. Not sure if its the smooth jazz saxophones, or the stimulating drum beat playing throughout the video,…

We Might Have Underestimated How Big Google Really Is

We Might Have Underestimated How Big Google Really Is

Looks like Google might be bigger than we thought it was. The photo above is from Intac and is a visual portrayal of the exact number of devoted servers that major tech companies own. This diagram allows you to get a clear image of how much larger some of these servers are than others. If you just heard the numbers, like 100,000 for Intel and between 20,000 and 30,000 for Facebook and AT&T, you would just think of them as an interesting fact and nothing more. Such companies like Amazon, eBay and Microsoft have over 50,000 servers but they have no chance as being as big as Google is. Google has an estimated…

Google Stands Up For Free Expression

Google Stands Up For Free Expression

Google takes on the world’s governments today, publishing details about how often countries around the world ask it for user data or instruct it to censor information. The data is available using Google’s newly-introduced Government Requests Tool (illustrated above). Interestingly, Brazil took the top of the list with 3,663 data requests the US took second place with 3,580 and the UK came in third with 1,166 such requests. Sure, we know Google has withdrawn from China in protest against that country’s censorship, but it was unable to publish those figures as they are state secrets. Brazil…

Will Google Ultimately Fail Because of Twitter, Facebook, and Social Media?

Will Google Ultimately Fail Because of Twitter, Facebook, and Social Media?

Twitter and Facebook are the two powerhouses in social media right now. There isn’t a day I watch television without these two being mentioned. It’s a pretty big deal in the public’s eyes. But there is one company that has been missing out on social media opportunities for far too long — you might have heard of it: the mighty Google. Big G can’t get hop on the social media bandwagon. Orkut has faded from existence in the States. Jaiku is dead(ish). Open Social has gone nowhere. Buzz is an unfinished product that has made a mess. That search deal with Twitter hasn’t really produced anything interesting…

Google HTTP

Google HTTP's Off Nerds

The web has been around for some time now, and the world is divided into two camps: people who get it, and people who don’t. If you open a browser, type ‘google.com’ in the address bar and then type ‘facebook.com’ into the Google search box, you don’t really ‘get’ the web. Google is hoping to rectify that, with a small, and fairly obvious change that no one has ever really thought too much about. Their Chrome browser no longer displays the ‘http://’ in front of the domain name in the address bar. The change has caused a stir in the web nerd community, with accusations of dumbing down the web, and questions…
