Benjamin Franklin is Cracking Down on Counterfeiting

Benjamin Franklin is Cracking Down on Counterfeiting

It seems to be a lot easier to copy and counterfeit currency nowadays and there are constant concerns about using or being given a fake bill. The U.S Department of Treasury has recently refreshed the $100 bill, in an attempt to curb the counterfeiting epidemic that has taken over in the last few years. The new $100 bill was designed with a tighter security feature called Motion -  there are over 650,000 embedded micro-lenses which allow images to shift when the thin bill is moved. There is a blue 3D security ribbon on the front of the bill and when it is moved, the hidden images of bells and 100s switch…

Vintage Postcards Invaded by Star Wars

Vintage Postcards Invaded by Star Wars

Have you ever looked at a scene of a family on vacation in 1950s and thought “you know what would go really well here? Star Wars!”. Yeah, me neither. But now that I’ve seen it, it’s all sorts of great. Flickr user Franco Bambilla took a series of vintage postcards and added in either Star Wars or aliens and called in “Invading the Vintage”. For what reason he did so, no-one knows. But let’s be glad he did. You can check out the rest either on his Flickr page or his personal site. [Source: Buzzfeed]…

You Know You're In Texas When the Train Runs on Beef

Cows just aren’t used for their milk anymore. The first passenger train fueled by beef-based biodiesel traveled from Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, Texas yesterday. This is a yearlong test in hopes to see if beef-based biodiesel is capable of running the Amtrak Heartland Flyer passenger train. The test is also to see if the new biodiesel can cut fuel costs, reduce emissions and make sure that the ride if just as comfortable for passengers. The fuel is a mixture of 80% diesel and 20% biofuel called B20. The yearlong trial has been funded by the Federal Railroad Administration and has a $274,000 grant…

Yulu is finally getting a break and people are highly intrigued by his new inventions. He has built almost 50 robots which can pour drinks, use lighters to light cigarettes and even paint. He’s even designed one that can help with chopping up food for meals. After working on his creations for nearly 20 years, Yulu’s robots…

YouTube Kills Our Hitler Parodies

YouTube Kills Our Hitler Parodies

No self-respecting Internet user can possibly have missed the many and varied Hitler parodies based on scenes from Constantin Films’ 2004 film, Der Untergang (“Downfall”). They’ve been everywhere, with one particularly hilarious example depicting the defeated German leader’s reaction on hearing the iPod touch lacks a camera. Now they’re gone. YouTube has begun removing videos that feature content from the movie because Constantin Films has suddenly decided to use Google’s Content I.D. system to take down the clips. Which is strange, as these things have been flying around the…

Washington Town Sold On eBay

Welcome to Wauconda, Washington, a small town that sold for $360,000 on eBay this week – a bargain if you’re looking for a chance to own a district. Wauconda is 25 minutes from the Canadian border and sits on Highway 20. The new owners, Maddie and Neal Love, got: a restaurant, store, gas station, a four-bedroom house and a zip code after a month long bidding war. Interestingly, the town is also known to host a couple of ghosts, including the spirit of a young Indian fighter. The Loves are both unemployed and are selling their home and all their possessions to buy the town and move there. The deal is expected…

Google Stands Up For Free Expression

Google Stands Up For Free Expression

Google takes on the world’s governments today, publishing details about how often countries around the world ask it for user data or instruct it to censor information. The data is available using Google’s newly-introduced Government Requests Tool (illustrated above). Interestingly, Brazil took the top of the list with 3,663 data requests the US took second place with 3,580 and the UK came in third with 1,166 such requests. Sure, we know Google has withdrawn from China in protest against that country’s censorship, but it was unable to publish those figures as they are state secrets. Brazil…

This One Simple Thing Could Save The World

This One Simple Thing Could Save The World

What is the number one crisis the world faces? It’s not global warming. It’s not AIDS/HIV. It’s not even December 21, 2012. It’s something quite simpler. It is water, or lack thereof. The world is currently suffering from a water shortage crisis. But this one little faucet could immediately change everything. It’s called the Smart Faucet. It doesn’t do anything mind blowing, but what it does do is truly smart: in order to operate the water faucet, you must depress a lever that opens the water flow. The interesting part is that the user must hold this lever down to have the water flow, meaning that a…
