The Things We Do for Science: Real-World Grand Theft Auto

The Things We Do for Science: Real-World Grand Theft Auto

My friends and I have always talked about how arcade driving is so much more satisfying than real-world driving; you know, the unrealistically responsive steering, the third-person camera angle. It would be a dream. What? Yeah, I’ve got friends. Can’t blog all the time. Anyway, it seems the crew at Rooster Teeth have actually gone and given this concept a real-world shot by blacking out the windows of a pickup truck and securing a camera to the back of it via a really long pole. I won’t spoil anything, but I will say I am now officially content with real-world driving. There’s a bit of sailor-talk…

Drive Carefully with New BlackBerry Application

Drive Carefully with New BlackBerry Application

Ever sent a text while driving? Thought it would be alright to just pick up the phone and have a quick conversation while trying to pay attention to the road? Chances are we’ve all done it. Now that Ontario has passed the ‘Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act,’ motorists have to wait until they’re off the road or use a Bluetooth device if planning to chat while driving. Voice on the Go unveiled their new hands-free idea today. DriveCarefully is a unique app that allows BlackBerry Smartphone users to keep their eyes on the road instead of on their phone. Completely…

iTunes Makes Facebook Connect Connection

iTunes Makes Facebook Connect Connection

iTunes keeps cosying-up to Facebook, the world’s largest social network. Now it seems Apple plans to support Facebook Connect, enabling a wave of networking opportunities for music fans. Apple has been promoting iTunes through Facebook for ages. Its UK iTunes Festival last year offered free tickets, music and other promotions to customers via Facebook, and in the US the iTunes team have been developing its own Facebook presence, adding polls, featured items and more. Integration between Facebook and iTunes already lets you share songs on iTunes via Facebook, though this only lets you…

Solar Charger Just Might Be More Useful Than iPad For Developing World

Solar Charger Just Might Be More Useful Than iPad For Developing World

Going strictly by the chatter on the North American web,  you’d be forgiven for thinking the iPad is going to save the world. But there are also, oh, about a couple of billion people around who, instead of thinking about how the iPad is going to revolutionize media, can’t rely on having small, insignificant luxuries like water and constant electricity. That’s kind of a big deal if you want to do something radical like charging your cell phone, a device that is often a lifeline not just for individuals but sometimes for whole villages. That’s why the Solar Pebble seems like such a step in the right direction….

Treadmill Bike Sounds Like Drunken Idea But Is Totally Real

Treadmill Bike Sounds Like Drunken Idea But Is Totally Real

Imagine it: two fitness buffs take a break from their rigorous exercise regime to get totally blitzed. Six drinks in, one of them suddenly sits bolt upright and says: “you know what would be awesome? A bike that was a treadmill!” K, that’s probably not how this treadmill bike came about. But still, you gotta’ wonder… Of course, the idea is actually much less crazy than it sounds. By putting an inclined treadmill on what is basically a large scooter, you get the workout and resistance of an uphill run without having to be cooped up indoors – and you can get where you need to go to boot. And really, who wants…

Applegirl

Applegirl's PokerFace Matched Only by Mad iPhone Skills

I can’t decide what’s more impressive about this video:  ‘Applegirl002′s’ skill in using iPhone apps to create music; or the fact that she sings Lady Gaga’s famous track while making an appropriately badass face. The techno-friendly musician got buzz a couple of weeks ago for her rendition of Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” and has now set her sights of Gaga’s Pokerface. She spends the first part of the video breaking down how she goes about using iPhones and specific apps to create her songs, and then she goes on to use her impressive skills and voice to sing that song you won’t admit to liking but will…

Safe Eyes Makes iPad Even More Kid-Friendly

Safe Eyes Makes iPad Even More Kid-Friendly

According to InternetSafety.com, Safe Eyes Mobile will provide protection for children using Apple’s latest creation, the iPad. Safe Eyes Mobile employs award-winning filtering technology and was the first filtered web browser for Apple’s iPod Touch and iPhone. It will allow parents to limit access to inappropriate websites that their kids might come across on the iPad. Safe Eyes Mobile will automatically block 35 categories of websites on the iPad, while still offering the same pinch and tap zoom, bookmarks and built-in Google search as the Safari browser it will be replacing. “The…

Spanish Government Officials Stealing Content On A Regular Basis

Spanish Government Officials Stealing Content On A Regular Basis

The Spanish government is quite unique as far as copyright laws are considered: it is completely legal to upload and download copyrighted material as long as it is for “personal use.” This means that every single Spaniard can download the latest Timbaland track, rip the latest Avatar movie, and acquire an unlimited amount of content through file sharing, for free. They got it good, don’t they? However, there is pressure on the government to change. Most countries that participates in international trade would like it if Spain would conform to copyright infringement laws. To the MPAA, RIAA,…

Face-Meltingly Awesome Twitter Watch Renders Your Rolex Totally Unclassy

Face-Meltingly Awesome Twitter Watch Renders Your Rolex Totally Unclassy

I’m a total freak for Twitter. It’s the greatest thing to happen to the internet in ages, and I wish I had it on me at all times. I’d get an iPhone app, but the hell if I’m paying an iPhone-sized monthly bill. Fortunately for me, the designers at Tokyoflash are working on an alternative concept that will rock your socks into another dimension. I’d like to have a romantic relationship with this watch. Check it out: we’ve got three modes: microblogging, which can display your twitter and Facebook contacts’ status updates, world clock, which can give you the skinny on what’s the when…

The Only Thing Missing is the Gasoline Smell

The Only Thing Missing is the Gasoline Smell

Man, it’s hard to believe the 50’s was 60 years ago. That’s the better half of a century. Time flies, no? Ever want to revisit that decade? Listen to some rock n’ roll? Drink some soda-pop? I was born in the 80’s, so I don’t. But maybe you do!

Designer Gary Katz has a way. Katz has made a really cool replica of a classic drive-in theatre, complete with moody sunset, ugly metal speakers, and dashboard view. There’s an absurd attention to detail, here; Katz has gone out of his way to research and capture the 50’s aesthetic. Hats off, Gary. Why the hell is this on Techi, you ask? Because…

Ice Trucking Just Got A Little Less SMART

Ice Trucking Just Got A Little Less SMART

As the proud owner of a Smart car, I simply had to post this. Mercedes gave Wired a couple of Smart ForTwo’s to take up to Inuvik, Canada to test drive the same routes used by ice truckers carrying wood down to Dawson City, Yukon. Considering these cars were originally meant for the gentle streets of continental Europe, they handle the challenge admirably. The Smart cars started even without engine block heaters in 40 below temperatures, no mean feat. At 70 horsepower, the cars struggled to keep up with the pace, but managed that task too. I love my Smart car, and it’s great to know that if I ever wanted…

A Robot to Light Up Your Life (or at least your home)

A Robot to Light Up Your Life (or at least your home)

You thought the way the Solar Pebble slapped the sun around was pretty cool, right? Right? Here’s another great way we mancreatures are bringing the sun to its knees as a sustainable energy source. That is, sustainable until the sun explodes in like 5 billion years. But that’s irrelevant. Until then, we have the Sundolier! ‘Bah! I’ve seen this before,’ you say. You would. And, granted, from these photos, the Sundolier would appear at first to be a fairly typical skylight. But let’s not get our lines crossed here – first of all, this thing’s a freaking robot that sits on your roof. …Yeah,…
