HTC's Customized Windows Phone 7 Interface

A video has appeared on YouTube that appears to show HTC’s customized UI for Microsoft’s upcoming mobile OS. Windows Phone Series 7, now Windows Phone 7, now coming to be known as WP7 is due to hit the streets in the near future, and this video appears to show a WP7 phone with several new apps and UI touches. The apps include 3D notes that fly off the screen and a cute “love me, love me not” animated app. The video, first spotted by mobilitydigest.com, is not official, but features the words ‘HTC confidential’ at the bottom, and one tile on the home screen of the phone shows the HTC Portal….

'In Soviet Russia' Joke Goes Here

Despite Soviet heritage, I don’t pretend to know more Russian than I learned watching James Bond movies through my childhood. Basically, I know ‘yes’, ‘no’, and a host of Russian swear words slipped slyly past the ratings board. That being said, as you can probably guess, I don’t have much information on the video you’re watching, there, beyond the fact that it’s Russian President Dmitry Medvedev handling a 4G prototype phone with a display on either side. This would, of course, come off as entirely ridiculous, but if I’m not mistaken, that back screen appears to be e-ink. Totally rocking if you…

Why The BlackBerry Torch Doesn

Why The BlackBerry Torch Doesn't Deserve The Burn

The general consensus following the release of the BlackBerry Torch in the tech journalism sphere was that RIM had failed to put out a competitor to the iPhone and Android smartphones, and had therefore failed. Since we’re never really about swimming with the other salmon here on Techi, I decided to hold a very unscientific poll of a few friends and colleagues who were already BlackBerry users to see if they agreed with the pundits. BlackBerry Users Are Loyal Overwhelmingly, they did not. Out of about six people, only one definitively stated that they would be switching to an iPhone. The rest were…

Screenshots Of Nokia's MeeGo OS

Nokia’s next generation of phones will be powered by an OS named MeeGo, the convergence of Nokia’s Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin OS. The official MeeGo site provided a preview of the new interface, which contains few surprises. The icons are displayed grid-style, like Android and iOS. Much of the visual cues and UX look similar or identical to iOS. While Nokia clearly isn’t aiming for a revolutionary experience like Microsoft is with Windows Phone 7, it’ll be great to see a fresh coat of paint on a Nokia device….

We Want A Revolution - And Windows Phone 7 Promises It

We Want A Revolution - And Windows Phone 7 Promises It

Microsoft is bold. In this new ad for Windows Phone 7, a simple promise is made: ‘The revolution is coming’. I don’t want to knock Microsoft. I love Microsoft (…most of the time). Sure, they’re kinda boring and suit-y, but they more often than not make great products, and Windows Phone 7 is shaping up to be one of them, from what I’ve seen. That UI absolutely kills me in the best way. Gorgeously unique. Of course, that alone will not an iPhone-killing OS make (despite certainly helping – pay attention, RIM), so we’ll have to just sit tight and see where this goes. You’d better watch out, Microsoft. Might…

Techi Reviews the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint

Techi Reviews the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint's Network

The HTC EVO 4G is one of few in a lineup of “superphones” that have hit the market recently with Android power behind it. But the EVO might just be the best of them all. So is this powerhouse by HTC the best phone that money can buy today? Well, you’ll have to read our review to find out! Let’s kickstart this review with a bit of a shocker: this is the time in my life when I have actually said “wow” out loud from a first impression (and I am somewhat hard to impress). Soon after first experiencing this phone, I quickly realized that the EVO is what the future of mobile phones should look like, feel like,…

Totally Rad Steampunk Phones For the Oldschool Gentleman

Totally Rad Steampunk Phones For the Oldschool Gentleman

I was going to ask you if you enjoy rad things, but I know you. You’re a tech blog-surfing, web-savvy, geek-chic internet all-star. I don’t need to ask stupid questions. Let’s just move on. Speaking of things which identify as rad, check this out. Or, like, don’t, whatever, but your Thursday will be less rad if you don’t rad it up with this. Designer Ivan Mavrovic doesn’t dick around when it comes to steampunking anything and everything in his world. Frankly, as far as steampunk artists go, he’s possibly one of the most adept I’ve ever seen, the list of reasons including but not limited to the fact that…

Samsung: Helping Overprotective Parents Become Even more Obsessive

Samsung: Helping Overprotective Parents Become Even more Obsessive

This is how it works. The parent tells the kid “you must be home every day by 9pm.” The kid then says “Yes, mom.” The kid will proceed to come home at the designated time. Then he will do what all kids do. Wait until the coast is clear and sneak the hell out of there. Kids need freedom and parents don’t want to give it away. It seems Samsung is siding with the parents. They’re giving them access to a system (By GTX Corp) that scares me. In layman terms, your parents will be able to track every move you make via GPS. If you take your cellphone with you, they know where you are. Kind of like Foursquare on steroids….

Sony Laughs Off Apple in Latest PSP Ad

Sony Laughs Off Apple in Latest PSP Ad

It would seem Sony is setting something of a double standard, taking an indirect dig at Apple in its latest PSP ad. Though the phone is never mentioned by name, it’s clear ‘Josh Rose’, apparently kidding himself, is bragging about having downloaded, er… ‘Game Castle’ on an iPhone (looks like tight graphics if I’ve ever seen them). The commercial goes on to essentially say that for $9.99, you could be getting far greater and more playable games than the typical iPhone fare. And guess what? It’s not wrong. The double standard of which I’m speaking, though, is the fact that, well… isn’t Sony planning…

Apple vs. Motorola: Who Can Lock It Down

Apple vs. Motorola: Who Can Lock It Down

Apple has been fighting hard against the jailbreak community for years now. Every update Apple dishes out feels like its a direct punch to the kidney to those wishing to install third-party applications to their device. Another heavyweight, Motorola,  is taking large steps to lock down their new devices as well. Efuse Chip The new Motorola Droid X which touts impressive specs such as a 1ghz processor, 4.3” high resolutions screen, an 8 MP camera, and an impressive HDMI output up to 720p. It is currently running the latest version of Android (2.1), with the understanding that when Froyo (2.2)…

Nokia

Nokia's X3 Touch And Type Lands

Nokia’s new phone attempts to bridge the still fairly wide gap between touchscreen and physical keyboards. Nokia’s phones might not be quite as on the ball as Apple, HTC and Motorola, but their marketing is improving in leaps and bounds, as the Finnish Jonny Ive in the YouTube clip shows. Nokia is following RIM in building phones that keep people comfortable with the physical keyboard they’re used to, while spoiling them with the luxury of a device that responds to touch. The device clearly isn’t targeting iOS and Android users, and the price, around $160 reflects that. But with no solid competitor…

Apple Looking Into A Telephonic MacBook - That Even SOUNDS Retro

Apple Looking Into A Telephonic MacBook - That Even SOUNDS Retro

Even I have to admit that wandering around town looking for an unguarded WiFi signal blows, and I’m not about to drop the cost of a USB internet stick. My laptop cost enough on its own, thanks. Luckily, it would seem Apple’s looking into it, recently filing patents for a telephonic laptop featuring a magnetically coupled antenna. Mobile communications being what they are, this would only seem to make sense, and in terms of tech, is a great step forward. But on the other hand, as a designer, I’m left wondering. If Apple has a commitment to one thing, and one thing only, that is form factor. An Apple product…
