Watching popcorn popping at 10,000 frames per second

Watching popcorn popping at 10,000 frames per second

The Slowmo Guys often find interesting things to capture on video and play back for us in super slow motion, but this one in particular caught our fancy because of the precision camerawork necessary to capture 10,000 frames per second. The corn was popping so fast that at 100x slower it simply wasn’t enough to capture the nuance of the interesting steam-powered explosion of a dried, popping piece of corn. To solve this, they slowed it down even more to 400x. The results are pretty fifty. …

As Google makes driverless cars a reality, who will actually "drive" them?

As Google makes driverless cars a reality, who will actually "drive" them?

While Google takes on the role of trailblazer in Nevada, there are questions that surround the technology behind their driverless car. The questions aren’t about whether or not the technology will work but rather around who will actually allow themselves to be driven around. There’s an obvious demographic, of course. Those with disabilities such as Steve Mahan can be empowered by the mobility and freedom that a driverless car has to offer him. Will anyone who isn’t needing the use of driverless cars actually buy these in the future? Yes. In fact, there’s a very strong contingent particularly…

Google’s Project Glass could change our views

Google’s Project Glass could change our views

Every time there is a new smart phone put on the market, millions of people flock to the release in hopes of getting their hands on one on that opening day. However, what if technology changed and the smart phones of the past moved forward to what Google is now testing called Project Glass? What if we can explore and share everything about our world and everyday lives without pressing buttons? Google’s Project Glass is taking technology out of your hands and is instead putting it right in your face. Well, not literally in your face, but right in your view. Here is what it looks like: Now, while this could…

Suicidal prevention tools for military service members launched by Facebook

Suicidal prevention tools for military service members launched by Facebook

With all the Facebook apps and social media resources being launched daily, it’s hard to believe that something like this hasn’t been established a long time ago. Facebook has recently developed a program which gives military personnel and their family’s customized resources for when their content is flagged as dangerous or suicidal. This is an additional program added to the effort made by Facebook in December towards suicide prevention. By simply clicking a link next to the comment this allows friends and family to make it known to the social media site when another user shows signs…

30,000 dominoes used to pay tribute to Nintendo

30,000 dominoes used to pay tribute to Nintendo

As Alfred put it in The Dark Knight, “Some men just want to watch the world burn.” Then, there are those who just want to build something over time just to watch them fall down again. That’s the feeling one gets when watching this tribute to Nintendo made from 30,000 dominoes meticulously placed in a way to pay homage to various popular titles. It was a bit sad to watch; that’s a lot of work put into eventual destruction. It takes a certain personality type. The exception: Why Rovio should not go public

The exception: Why Rovio should not go public

In the tech world, companies are often encouraged to go public for many reasons, not the least of which being the infusion of cash that helps for expansion, improved conditions, and innovations. In most cases, growing companies like Rovio should consider an IPO to build upon the momentum they have. When you’re hot, you’re hot, and it’s the time that most choose to strike the iron. Rovia is one of the exceptions. Here’s why:   They’re profitable. Very profitable. Breaking down the SEC

Breaking down the SEC's beef with Groupon

Few public companies have experienced the type of roller coaster ride that Groupon has been on in such a short time. From darling to dud to darling and back to dud, the social buying site has been on the top of daily deals for a while but has been embroiled in controversy after controversy continuously. Their latest challenge: the Securities and Exchange Commission. Whenever the SEC gets involved, prospects for the future are often dim. In this graphic, we explore the sources and current status of the SEC probes. Via: Courtesy of: BackGroundCheck.org Related articles Groupon’s SEC troubles,…

Driverless technology: Google gets behind the wheel

Driverless technology: Google gets behind the wheel

The future is now. At least, that is what we will be saying when the driverless automobile takes to the roads. Google has been testing its driverless technology with the Toyota Prius on the streets of California and with so much success, Nevada has approved America’s first driverless license. Like the futuristic ride Will Smith sported in I, Robot, vehicle technology has proven to be safe, effective and automatic. Does this mean that Google will invest in its own line of automobiles or will they stick to the technology game? With the rising platform of Google innovation, there is no reason why…

Dear Hollywood: If illegal downloads hurt your industry, Avengers should have flopped

Dear Hollywood: If illegal downloads hurt your industry, Avengers should have flopped

The math is pretty straight forward. It was likely the most widely-downloaded camcorder recording of a movie ever. Following the thinking of the MPAA, this dramatically hurts the profits of ailing Hollywood studios because illegal downloads are the worst thing that has come out of the digital age. It stands to reason that they should spend millions on lobbying Washington for strict measures to end piracy and save Hollywood. The virally-popular pirated version of The Avengers (which came out a week before it’s US release) is the reason that the film flopped. Except it didn’t. It has already been…

Cruising the internet: Is Blueseed the utopian answer for entrepreneurs or a pathway to economic ruin?

Cruising the internet: Is Blueseed the utopian answer for entrepreneurs or a pathway to economic ruin?

I recently read an article on Mashable about Blueseed, a ship funded by Pay-Pal billionaire Peter Thiel, which will house over a hundred starter companies, protecting them from the laws that restrict them. Immediately I thought of Jurassic Park and if memory serves me, things didn’t end very well for Dr. Hammond. A vast ship on the digital horizon might be the future of starter companies around the globe but what does that mean? What restrictions will these starter companies be free from that might negatively affect those off of the ship? With no restriction, what will these companies be free…

All of this now fits in your pocket

All of this now fits in your pocket

Technology is amazing and we all know it. What we may forget or even take for granted is that there was a time around thirty years ago when we needed dozens of different devices to do the things that we do with our current smartphones. As they put it at Gather, “The smartphone that’s currently sitting in your pocket right now is hundreds of times more powerful than the massive computer components that once filled entire rooms.” Now we have to wonder what will fit in our pockets thirty years from today….
