World Cup Cuts Through Previous Twitter Record

World Cup Cuts Through Previous Twitter Record

I live in downtown Toronto, which, when last I researched the matter, is statistically the most ethnically diverse city in the world. As such, the World Cup is a pedestrian’s nightmare – with no general squad bias, the entire duration of the tournament is a storm of rabid fans cheering and criss-crossing sidewalks and spilling out of pubs and driving their World-Cup-themed automocars down the street, honking all the while; World Cup Toronto is a sight that needs to be seen to be believed. You should come next time. No, you can’t sleep on my couch. Anyhow, the point is that the World Cup creates in human…

Twitter-Powered Marble Coaster Can Make Your Tweets Incrementally Less Inconsequential

Twitter-Powered Marble Coaster Can Make Your Tweets Incrementally Less Inconsequential

Here’s a Twitter oddity I am absolutely not going to do the opposite of talk about. You’ve probably seen something like this before, but its ties to social media and the fact that you can watch it in real time set it apart. This is Marble Art, and while they could have spent a couple more hours on a name, it’s impressive nonetheless. Essentially, it’s a marble coaster powered by tweets – specifically, the hashtag #marbleart.tv. Punch the keys (for God’s sake) and check out the live webcam feeds to watch your marble do that thing marbles like to do: succumb to gravity. While I for one wish there was a little…

Flippin' the Bird: Twitter Hits 2 Billion Tweets per Month

On Monday, Techi’s Tim Duffy (actually, Tim, can I call you Tim? I’ve never actually asked) predicted Twitter’s eventual downfall, igniting a firestorm of feedback both for and against the social networking darling. Now, upon reading Tim’s post, I threw my head back and laughed defiantly. I love Twitter. I ‘get’ Twitter. Twitter is like a really obscure inside joke; unless you already know what it is, you’re going to think unfounded things like it’s ‘stupid’ and ‘dying’. Am I in denial? Maybe, but I’m certainly not alone. Check it: in the month of May, in the year two thousand and ten, Twitter has…

Bye Bye Birdie: Why Twitter is On the Outs

Bye Bye Birdie: Why Twitter is On the Outs

Like it or not, Twitter has become an unavoidable part of our online lives. Created by Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone in 2006, the social networking platform’s reach has grown remarkably over the past four years. According to a recent study conducted by Edison Research, 87 percent of the U.S. population is now aware of its existence. Surprising? Not really. Forget about Twitter’s overwhelming online presence, the site is constantly being thrown in our face throughout every media outlet imaginable. From CNN to ESPN, we’re constantly exposed to the endless stream of thoughts that Twitter encompasses….

Your Monday Afternoon Ego Boost

Your Monday Afternoon Ego Boost

Little is more satisfying to today’s Twitterwhore than the gathering of followers; I know I for one am certainly guilty. Lucky us – there’s now a means to stroke our titanic egos! Start up a wicked fat beatbox rhythm and click here to check out IS Parade, a service that quite literally puts you in control of an animated parade of followers, who declare their own recent tweets as they pass – all set to a totally infectious beat. Naturally, this is a Japanese invention, and only further proves they have way better ideas than we do. Assuming you have a few minutes to spare, check this out and feed your ego….

Prevail Whale! Official Twitter Client is #1

Prevail Whale! Official Twitter Client is #1

Well, that was fast. Only a few days ago did Toby muse at the official Twitter client’s imminent roll out, and it must have heard him, because later that day, there it was, chillin’ out max and relaxin’ all cool and shootin’ some b-ball outside of the App Store. Oddly, that was all it could do, but glitches aside, it’s now readily-downloadable and has rocketed to the #1 free app almost instantly. Now, this could be due to developer Loren ‘Atebits’ Brichter being the goddamn man, and having developed such a monstrously unbeatable Twitter client (Tweetie), the company had no choice but to just buy it….

Official Twitter Clients Due Soon?

Official Twitter Clients Due Soon?

After announcing back in early April that Twitter had purchased Atebits, it appears an official iPhone and iPad client is due soon. Tweetie for iPhone has disappeared from the App Store, which hopefully means we should be seeing Twitter for iPhone soon. The last Tweetie update featured a slot machine animation announcing the new version coming soon, but the app disappearing from the store is a sure sign we are in for a treat pretty soon. Loren Brichter, the man behind Atebits, has apparently been hard at work, but I’m hoping that Twitter for iPhone and iPad isn’t really too far away from Tweetie,…

How

How's Your Internet Feeling Today?

The boon of a slow news day (or morning, at the very least) is that it gives an intrepid internetsman like myself the opportunity to force upon hapless readers all sorts of awesome stuff. Take this, for example. Yes, it does look like one of those aroma therapy candles your mom would buy, doesn’t it? She’s got to hide your scent somehow, you basement-dwelling freak technology enthusiast. But a candle it’s not – this is an oracle into the state of the social web. Existing as little more than an Arduino hooked up to a WiFly (okay, so that’s all it is), this little unit scans Twitter at large for trigger words…

Finally, A Way To Make Even Your Most Mundane Tweets Half-Dignified

Finally, A Way To Make Even Your Most Mundane Tweets Half-Dignified

Today is historic. Today was never supposed to happen, yet against all odds, it did. Today marks the first time I’ve sat back and thought to myself ‘Huh. Might be nice to have an iPad.’ Now, I catch a lot of flak as Techi’s resident Apple skeptic (he said, typing this from a Mac), but this morning, I am all smiles about That Crazy-Powerful, Magical iPad. Why, might you ask? You probably mightn’t. But either way, I’m going to show you. Here, we have Tabloids, running on the iPad. Pretty well-formatted app, right? Sexy. So it’s a news feed reader, isn’t it? Actually, it isn’t. This thing’s a goddamn Twitter…

Bitter Twitter Bugs Celebrities

Bitter Twitter Bugs Celebrities

Twitter says it has now fixed the bug which allowed people to force others to follow them. The loophole, that one could simply type ‘accept @LadyGaga’ to force Lady Gaga to follow your tweets was closed, but not before being passed around the social networking took. Originally found by a Turkish man known as bilo31, the bug did not disrupt service but Twitter was forced to reset many accounts while cleaning up the damage. Other than Lindsay Lohan being subjected to the banal musings of Stu from Pennsylvania, the devastation was relatively mild. Had the hack been widespread, spammers could have…

Twannotations? You Know You Twant Them

Twannotations? You Know You Twant Them

The laws of new technology dictate that when one technology trend is successful, it can, nay must spawn a thousand follow up add-ons, also-rans and tie-ins. Twannotations is the latest addition to the successful Twitter platform, the idea being that you can add the letters T and W to any English word and create an add-on to aid you in your tweetings. Twannotations will Twallow you to add Twadditional information to your tweets outside the 140 character limit. For example, you can tweet 140 characters about how you really can’t fit much information in a single Tweet, then add your mood and some keywords…

Google and YouTube join forces to bring you an exclusive Conan O

Google and YouTube join forces to bring you an exclusive Conan O'Brien video.

On a break from his current ‘Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour’, Conan O’Brien had some time to visit Google before his show in San Jose. Google and YouTube teamed up to bring you this video and although its 48 minutes long, I recommend watching it. Not only did he bring his humor, but he took a minute to talk about the power of Twitter. Apparently he didn’t spend a penny on promotion for his tour and solely used Twitter as a means of marketing. He also talks about how much he has learned about social networking and technology in the last three months. Source – YouTube…
