Moms are mobile, web-savvy, and spending money

Moms are mobile, web-savvy, and spending money

It’s no secret that many American family purchases are made or influenced by women. The 80/20 rule, which says that women control 80% of the purchases, is a simplification and exaggeration on the facts, but it’s a good rule to follow simply because it emphasizes the power that moms in a household have over purchases. As mobile and online advertising continue to grow and influence the ways we buy, having an understanding of the female influence is essential. In this infographic, BuySellAds explores “mommy power” in purchases. Click to enlarge. …

Google asks people to have an "email intervention" with their friends

Google asks people to have an "email intervention" with their friends

In one of the most aggressive attempts Google has made to promote one of its products, the “Email Intervention” campaign has launched to get users to push their friends and family over to Gmail. Combining humor and mentions of features, Google has put out a video and an accompanying “toolkit” to help their users get people off of their antiquated email clients. The idea is that this is a helpful way for people to improve the lives of their friends and family, giving them features such as free calls and video chat that other services do not offer. It’s clever and unique, but it does bring into question…

More brilliant Apple marketing: appealing to iPad and Mac owners for the iPhone

More brilliant Apple marketing: appealing to iPad and Mac owners for the iPhone

As if they didn’t do a great job already of marketing each individual product they put out, Apple has stepped up their push in the phone market by appealing to those who already have iPads and Macs, as well as those who have friends who have iPhones, iPads, or Macs. “If you don’t have an iPhone…” is the concept and centers around Facetime, the iOS app that allows users to video conference through their mobile devices or computers. With Android phones moving up quickly in the marketplace, Apple is feeling the heat to be more than just the “cool” smartphone. They want to take back any marketshare they’re…

Kinect

Kinect

The designers at Loft117 and programmer Jason Belmonti have teamed up to tap the Kinect for something that has been suspiciously absent from its ever-growing palette of applications: advertising. Behold the slick, stylish, and interactive ad potential exhibited in this installation, and marvel at what the future might bring. Would you stop and spend more time in front of an ad if you could control the action? Would a slammin’ soundtrack and kaleidoscopic visuals help? I think we can agree that the answer to both questions is a crystal-clear, resonant ‘most likely’. …

How the internet has changed the scope of advertising

How the internet has changed the scope of advertising

Poor television, radio, and print. What has the Internet done to you? Over the past several years, things have changed in advertising. Everything is moving online, jumping on iPads, and shifting away from the traditional formats. The changing online ecosystem has penetrated all corners of business. The advertising game has evolved for centuries, but within the last few years it’s undergone a deep transformation. Our friends at MGD put together this infographic that examines these changes and shows us a glimpse of where the industry is going. …

Facebook fuels advertising growth with new social video ads

Facebook fuels advertising growth with new social video ads

Facebook’s latest attempt at monetization includes video ads that are embedded inside games. The ads can be closed, but users that view that ads will be able to earn Facebook Credits — the company’s virtual currency — for watching the sponsored videos in their entirety. “It’s another way to get users to be more comfortable with Credits,” said Deb Liu, head of Facebook Credits. “It gets developers to adopt Credits and helps users understand what Credits are.” Sponsored videos will be rolled out to 350 games and apps on Facebook. The Facebook Credits that users earn can in turn purchase…

The hard disk you

The hard disk you've been waiting for!

We all know that new tech gadgets are more expensive in the beginning when demand and expenses could bring a higher  price. With hard drives, it’s amazing to see just how expensive they are versus how much they used to be. Take a look at three shining examples of how 10- and 15-MBs looked in the past both in physical form as well as cost. Could you imagine paying that kind of money to get 10-MBs? Neither could I. Today, they’re much cheaper: …but they weren’t always that small… …and they weren’t always inexpensive. …

The Apple ad machine through the years

The Apple ad machine through the years

If there’s one thing that Apple has done exceptionally well over the past decade, it’s advertising. They have built a subculture around their products that is sparked by the way they position them in the marketplace and embed them in our lives. We discussed the “We Believe” video that Apple used to promote their recent iPad 2 launch. Now, our friends at BuySellAds takes a look at the history of Apple promotions, product launches, and advertising and breaks it down for us visually. Below the graphic, we have a couple of iPad 2 launch videos to help you understand what it is that they do to make us desire…

Did Minority Report predict the future of advertising technology?

Did Minority Report predict the future of advertising technology?

The year is 2054. While preventing murders before they happen is the plot device driving the movie “Minority Report,” one of the most memorable aspects of the movie was the way that advertisers found and targeted people. As people passed by virtual billboards, retina scanners would identify them and target ads specifically to their needs. Is this close to the reality of our not-too-distant future? That’s the question that our friends at BuySellAds tackled when they put together the infographic below. First, take another look at the scene from the movie: Augmented reality. Facial (and eventually…

Apple Wants You To Believe in the iPad 2

Apple Wants You To Believe in the iPad 2

Despite selling out quickly and showing no signs of slowing, Apple released an ad that is geared towards expanding the brand and bringing a human touch to the technology. Everything about the ad is psychologically intended to promote the device as a lifestyle-changing element of daily existence. It’s brilliant. Is it necessary? No. The iPad 2 will sell what the iPad 2 will sell, which will likely break records over time, depending on how long it takes to get to the iPad 3. Still, it’s good to see the company continuing to press its domination in the tablet segment by attempting to go beyond the tech-oriented…

Google Going for YouTube Gold

Google Going for YouTube Gold

YouTube has always been a “nice to have” property for Google. The traffic, the domination of a segment, the feather in a cap that is oddly shy of very many (even though the feathers that do rest in Google’s cap are huge feathers) – it’s always been one of those things with a load of potential but a lack of forward movement on the revenue side. Google is changing their tune in 2011, as promised. After declaring intentions to increase staffing by 30%, it is now clear what most of these new hires are going to be doing: sales. One has only to look at their current Advertising Sales and Customer Support Job Board…

Singing Banner Ads Were Only The Beginning...

Singing Banner Ads Were Only The Beginning...

If Google has AdSense, let’s just call this NonSense. A new advertising campaign for people-what-make-cars Alfo Romeo is (we desperately hope) not the future of advertising, as you’ll doubtlessly agree by watching this video. ‘There’s no getting away from an offer this good’ proclaims a motorized billboard, as it chooses unwitting pedestrians and gives chase, urging them to purchase a car. I can’t imagine this is the best way to sell cars – and obviously, this video was created with humour in mind  – but still, there’s a deeper concern here. Given the pervasion of advertising in our everyday…
