While their story is one of bravery and heroism and all that good stuff (I promise I’m being sincere), everyone and their dog is trying to get a piece of the trapped Chilean miners pie, even Big Steve, who has donated to each of the miners ‘a latest iPod [sic]‘, as reported by Reuters. By ‘a latest’, I’m gonna assume a 32-gig Touch, which is pretty rad, just for sitting in a cave for 69 days. Then again, the miners have also been gifted $10000 each, trips around the world, movie deals, and tickets to sporting events, among other things. Steve’s offering seems more like a quick shot to stay in the public consciousness…

Strap in, folks. A week today (the 20th, if you don’t wanna hit F4), Apple will be holding a media event dubbed ‘Back to the Mac’. By the image, it would seem we may be seeing a new jungle cat enter the OSX family – Lion. That’s honestly all the info. Just a heads up to save the date, so you can watch Steve jump around and assimilate more buzzwords into Apple’s fold. ‘Magic?’ Please. I’m gunning for something even more spectacular. Like, ‘legendary’. ‘Mythic’. You know, something totally ridiculous. I’m vibrating like it’s Christmas, guys….

All I can say is that I definitely paid too much for my Mac Pro. One of the fellas at One Block Off the Grid was having trouble running AfterEffects on his Mac. It was time for a new machine. So, after purchasing 800 bucks worth of parts on Amazon, he decided to assemble them not in a PC case, but in the very box they came in. The result is a laugh-worthy (and ugly as hell (and totally awesome)) assemblage that needs to be basically hotwired just to turn on. I don’t think there’s ever been a machine more worthy of the ‘Hackintosh’ name. High five, guys….

This is just downright cartoonish. In an attempt to stay relevant, Microsoft, as you’re probably already aware, has been at work opening a chain of retail stores to do battle in the IRL with Jobs and Friends. But this is perhaps no bigger a pissing contest than in the Mall of America, where Microsoft is opening a store less than ten meters away from the Apple Store – directly across the hallway. I’d really like to see how this turns out. A couple days ago, a photo began circulating ’round and about the sphere of Google’s Chrome OS running on an iPad. A picture is worth a thousand words, not the least of which are ones like ‘untruth’, ‘falsehood’, and ‘Photoshoppery’. That last one may be fictional, but google is a verb now, so whatever. On any other day, I’d tell you I hate infographics. I’m really, really sick of seeing everything turned into a ‘clever’ set of pie charts. Remember that trend a couple years back where everything was an AfterEffects video where a guy would be talking really fast, and the words would be appearing and zooming around as he was saying them? Turns out Big Steve isn’t the ninja we all thought he was. NBC has announced it will not be joining Apple’s online TV revolution. NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker says that 99c is too low for one viewing of it’s TV shows, although currently the price point on iTunes is $1.99 to buy the show for as many viewings as you like. Essentially NBC isn’t betting that people will watch shows more than once. Which kind of throws its commitment to DVD sales and selling shows on iTunes into new light. It’s precisely this kind of politics that turns me off. I can sign up to a monthly subscription to Netflix for $7.99 and see as many old episodes of NBC’s shows as I like, but I can’t…

In the “no shit, sherlock” category this morning comes news that Apple is most likely planning to release a new iPad in the first quarter of 2011. Touch panel and glass suppliers are ramping up production for a new touch screen product with components shipping in the first quarter of next year.
