In the first Iron Man movie, Tony Stark was clever and bold. In the second, he was confused but arrogant. In The Avengers, he truly emerged as a hero amongst heroes, growing up while maintaining his wit and charm. If the trailer is any indicator, Iron Man 3 has Tony Stark turning into a bitter, grumpy man. The quick one-liners are gone,  replaced by depression, vitriol, and selfishness. He is vengeful. If there’s one thing that’s clear about this summer’s blockbuster movie lineup, it’s that superhero movies have gone from terrible homages as they’ve been in recent years to full-blown blockbusters that any geek can enjoy (as well as non-geeks alike). The Hollywood hype machine is already anointing this summer as the biggest one in movie history. The Avengers shattered records and it may not even be the biggest blockbuster of the summer if Bane (I mean The Dark Knight Rises) comes out firing. Beneath all of the hoopla surrounding comic book superheroes and recycled sequels, there are some really good movies that geeks and non-geeks alike shouldn’t miss. They don’t have the budgets. The math is pretty straight forward. It was likely the most widely-downloaded camcorder recording of a movie ever. Following the thinking of the MPAA, this dramatically hurts the profits of ailing Hollywood studios because illegal downloads are the worst thing that has come out of the digital age. May the Fourth be with you! Its Star Wars day and there is no better day than this to let your nerd hang out and go see Marvel’s Avengers this weekend.
