Girls, Not Boys, Drive Download Culture New Info Shows

Girls, Not Boys, Drive Download Culture New Info Shows

Forget preconceived ideas that the techi world’s digital destiny is run by the boys, for the boys – it looks like the girls are driving the digital home, with women downloading twice as much mobile content as men. Surprised? Perhaps, but these are the fresh findings found by US mobile ents firm, Myxer (a peddler of ringtones, wallpapers and video clips). Myxer claims its female users downloaded twice as much content in April as its male users. Women accounted for 67% of its content downloads for the month: 4.5 million in total. Men downloaded just 2.2 million items during the month. Myxer admits…

iPad's First Spyware is Intentional. Er, what?

It was only a matter of time before the iPad started seeing spyware surface. But I, for one, sure couldn’t have guessed it’d be like this. Mobile Spy is an app (I use the term loosely – I’ll explain in a moment) that allows an individual to collect the usage data of the target device, be it an iPad, Android phone, Blackberry, or Windows Mobile device, and view it via an online account. Said James John, CEO of Retina-X, the company behind the software: “Any device that can browse the Internet or send email can lead to unauthorized activities. Before now there was no method to monitor activities of children…

Video: First Peek At BlackBerry 6

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion has introduced its first promo video pushing what’s positive inside the future BlackBerry 6 OS, set to ship in Q3. It’s an incredibly busy presentation, but you do get to see some album cover-based music navigation, an onscreen (virtual) keyboard, Facebook and Twitter clients, and a quick glance at the new WebKit-based browser. (Note. WebKit is also used in Safari and Firefox). Oh, and don’t miss the consistently touch-based interaction throughout this video as Research In Motion takes it to Cupertino….

Nokia Attacks iPhone, BlackBerry With N8 Smartphone

Nokia Attacks iPhone, BlackBerry With N8 Smartphone

Nokia today took the wraps of its most strategically important product designed to take on the iPhone and Blackberry in the smartphone market, the unibody Nokia N8. The N8 is the first Nokia phone to run Symbian 3 software and won’t ship until the third quarter. Features of the $493 device aren’t bad – a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon Flash, a 3.5-inch HD touchscreen and HD video capture along with video editing tools. Symbian 3 offers support for gestures such as multi touch, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. The Nokia N8 also offers multiple, personalizable homescreens…

How the Blackberry Can Get Its Mojo Back

How the Blackberry Can Get Its Mojo Back

Though still successful, Blackberry is no longer the must-have gadget for the mobile crowd. What do they need to do to reclaim their position of leadership? Once upon a time, not so long ago, to own a Blackberry wasn’t to simply own a smartphone – it was to possess a symbol. Carrying around a Blackberry meant you were a successful, busy person, often ahead of the curve and definitely on top of your game. Oh my, how times have changed. While you could hardly argue that Research in Motion, the makers of the Blackberry, are doing poorly, it would be equally mistaken to say Blackberries are still the symbol…

RIM Thinks Different (And Wrong)

RIM Thinks Different (And Wrong)

Research In Motion says it isn’t sure that video is the “killer app” for smart phones. In the age of mobile technological ubiquity, we want everything everywhere, but rich media consumes as much as 30 times the bandwidth as simple text and images. While making the point that data networks are under massive strain from the recent surge in the use of apps and video, RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis said more efficient delivery is required before RIM takes further steps towards HD devices. RIM uses server-side technologies that make it’s web browsing and Blackberry apps between 3 and 8 times as efficient as it’s…

Palm Seeks Chinese Suitor As It Goes On Sale - Report

Palm Seeks Chinese Suitor As It Goes On Sale - Report

Following yesterday’s reports suggesting Palm has put itself up for sale comes more news on the company’s attempt to find a new friend. Chinea’s Huawei Technologies has been approached by an investment bank on behalf of Palm for preliminary acquisition talks, but discussions have not yet moved forward. Huawei Technologies isn’t a household name, but it has become the world’s second-biggest telecoms equipment company after Ericsson. And that lack of a household name could be the benefit it gains from buying a well-known brand such as Palm. One of the pioneers in PDA and smartphone tech,…

Twitter Announces Official Blackberry App, Gets a Little More Evil

Lately, there have been rumblings that much-beloved Twitter might start to turn a little evil and begin to compete with the huge economy of third-party apps that has sprung up around the service. Well, it looks like those rumors are at least partly true, as today Twitter announced an official Blackberry client. Here’s a list of the app’s features: Real-time BlackBerry push of Twitter direct messages Camera and photo gallery integration Browser integration for Tweeting links Customizable interface for changing fonts, hiding tool bars, etc. Inbox integration so you can read your Twitter direct…

RIM's Acquisition of QNX is Much More Interesting Than It Sounds

“RIM Acquires QNX… zzzz… what?” Whoa. Sorry. Almost nodded off there for a sec. But before you fall asleep, here’s why Blackberry-maker Reserach in Motion’s acquisition of QNX Software Systems is actually much more intriguing than a standard ‘M&A’ story. QNX were previously owned by Harman – you know, those people who make receivers and JBL speakers – in order to improve how their products integrated into cars. But rather than getting Blackberries to work better in automobiles, a much better explanation for the acquisition is that it’s all about battling Apple’s iPhone. Why? Well,…

Drive Carefully with New BlackBerry Application

Ever sent a text while driving? Thought it would be alright to just pick up the phone and have a quick conversation while trying to pay attention to the road? Chances are we’ve all done it. Now that Ontario has passed the ‘Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act,’ motorists have to wait until they’re off the road or use a Bluetooth device if planning to chat while driving. Leaked Screenshots Suggest Newest Blackberry OS Might Finally Suck Less

Leaked Screenshots Suggest Newest Blackberry OS Might Finally Suck Less

Blackberries – you gotta’ love ‘em. But lets be honest: if you have one, you peer over at your friend’s iPhone or Motorola Droid with more than a little envy. Sure, that Crackberry may be practical. But even the latest version aren’t exactly pretty. That all looks set to change, if a couple of leaked screenshots are anything to go by. …
