Philips Introduces First Wireless HDMI Blu-ray Player

Philips Introduces First Wireless HDMI Blu-ray Player

Everything seems to be going wireless, and that trend was obvious at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Philips unveiled what’s likely to become one of the hottest solutions for wireless entertainment, the world’s first wireless HDMI Blu-ray player. The BDP7580 not only features wireless HDMI, but it boasts a host of streaming options such as Netflix, Blockbuster, FilmFresh and Pandora. Unlike other Blu-ray players, this device only needs a single cord, the power cord, which makes it perfect for those home theater minimalists. “Consumers want to be able to stream content,…

Big Steve J Says No to Blu-Ray

Big Steve J Says No to Blu-Ray

Someone isn’t on board. “Bluray is looking more and more like one of the high end audio formats that appeared as the successor to the CD – like it will be beaten by Internet downloadable formats,” said turtleneck enthusiast Big Steve Jobs in response to a customer’s complaint that the new Mac Mini didn’t come with a Blu-ray drive. When said customer fired back that it was filesharing and piracy that lead to the dominance of the MP3, Jobs continued. “No, free, instant gratification and convenience (likely in that order) is what made the downloadable formats take off. And the downloadable movie…

Blu-Ray Players Use Apple Devices as Remote Controls

Blu-Ray Players Use Apple Devices as Remote Controls

Pioneer announced their new line of Blu-ray players yesterday. These new models are exactly the same as older versions, except for one new detail. The new line is now able to be controlled with an app on your iPhone or  iPod Touch. Along with Pioneer’s free iControlAV app, users can connect to their network and control the device’s many functions. This new feature is basically the same as using a remote control, but with a modern twist. Remotes get lost in the couch or deprogrammed. Having this app as a back-up might be a good idea when you’re too lazy to get up and manually change the channels. If being…

Star Wars Confirmed for Blu-Ray

Star Wars Confirmed for Blu-Ray

At a time like this, there is only one thing to say. And that thing is: OMG! OMG! OMG! Yes, according to the IGN, tweets coming in from the C2E2 comic book convention in Chicago report that Steve Sansweet of Lucasfilm confirmed that all six Star Wars movies are being readied for Blu-Ray release, along with extras. Sansweet reportedly said the following: “We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won’t call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We’re finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that…

Blu-Ray Format Now Competing With... uh... Itself

Blu-Ray Format Now Competing With... uh... Itself

The good news: Blu-Ray has released a new format standard, bumping the capacity of a single disc up to a brainbusting 128gigs! Now maybe Avatar and its features will fit on a single disc after all. The bad news: The new format doesn’t work on your current Blu-Ray player. Looks like it’s time to upgrade again. Maybe. Right now, you can cool your jets – the new format is strictly being released to the pro sector, for those who require high-capacity storage options. But every new storage medium begins that way, and it’s likely only a matter of time before we see lonely current-gen Blu-Ray players…

128GB Blu-Rays Finally Make Backing Up Your Porn Collection Practical

128GB Blu-Rays Finally Make Backing Up Your Porn Collection Practical

While 50GB on one disc seemed pretty incredible just a few short years ago, some enterprising scienticians are set to make your dual-layer copy of Click look downright quaint. A new version the Blu-Ray disc called BDXL (get it!?) is on the way and promises 128GB of storage space for writable discs. The new tech, which uses three or four layers instead of one or two, is aimed mainly at corporate users looking for a robust backup solution and lonely geeks with terrabytes of smutty films. Okay fine, only one of things is true. Before you get too excited about having all three Lord of the Rings movies on one…

Unnecessary Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray Has Unnecessary Quality Problems

Unnecessary Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray Has Unnecessary Quality Problems

As soon as Blu-Ray high-definition films became available, geeks the world over waited with bated breath for one group of films: Lord of the Rings. Then, those geeks were smacked smartly in the face. Why? Because after already releasing both the theatrical and extended cuts separately on DVD, in a clear attempt at a money-grab, Warner Bros. decided to release the theatrical cuts on Blu-Ray now, but save the extended high-def versions for later, when The Hobbit movie is released. Awesome, right? Well, now it seems that dedicated fans have been spat on again, as an astute member of AVS Forums has…

Avatar Blu-Ray/DVD to be released three times. Yeah, you read that right.

Avatar Blu-Ray/DVD to be released three times. Yeah, you read that right.

In what we can only assume is a move designed to make James Cameron both the richest and most evil man on Earth, today we learned that Fox is going to release the home version of ‘the most popular movie EVAH’ three times. Yep. Three separate times. The first, coming to North America on April 22nd, will be a bare-bones 2-D disc that will only feature the movie. Fox claims – with a straight face, mind you – that this was done both to ensure the best quality picture and sound, but also to coincide with Earth Day….
