Google Chrome now accounts for over one-third of the worldwide browser market

Mobile may be the talk of the web-browsing world, but computers still dominate. For now. As full-scale web browsers go, Chrome continues to dominate, and that is appearing to be the trend now and going forward. The latest news from reports from StatCounter show that in July, Chrome continued to push Internet Explorer and Firefox down on the scale by accounting for 33.8% of the worldwide browser traffic. Safari continued its slight upward movement, while Opera took a downward turn after making gains in May. According to TheNextWeb: StatCounter’s data has been openly questioned before, but…

In South America, Chrome rules

In South America, Chrome rules

The most dominant we browser within a continent is Google Chrome in South America. It isn’t even close. With nearly half of the internet usage on full web browsers in South America going being served on Google Chrome, it’s even more dominant than the 40.4% number that Internet Explorer puts up in North America according to Pingdom. Firefox is still the browser of choice in both Africa and Europe, while Oceania (around Australia) prefers IE. Asia joins South America with their preference towards Chrome. All three major browsers have been declared dead or dying at one point or another in the past,…

Google Chrome extension lets you +1 anything on the internet

Google Chrome extension lets you +1 anything on the internet

When the Google +1 button first rolled out earlier this year, it made a little bit of a splash from speculation that it may have an effect on general search rankings some time in the future. It was designed to help logged-in friends help each other with suggested web pages. Not a big deal. When Google then launched the Google+ social network, the similarities in design and integration of functionality became more intriguing. Users could click the +1 button on any website that had it installed and could use it to share the page on their Google+ profile. Again, great stuff, but nothing huge. Now, the…

One more feather in the Google+ cap: Themes

One more feather in the Google+ cap: Themes

It’s not that big of a deal, really. It’s just a Chrome extension that someone made to add some spice and life to Google+. Many people will be doing their browsing from mobile devices and clients and may never actually go to plus.google.com very often. Still, it’s really nice to see how quickly and easily it was made. What you see above is the top of Google+ the way I see it on Chrome. I installed this extension and in seconds I had a nice new look and feel. Again, this is nothing earth shattering. Then again, can you do this on Facebook? Yes. It’s just not very easy. Perhaps Google will be rolling out different…

Browser Wars

Browser Wars

Apple vs PC. Facebook vs Google+. Digg vs Reddit. There are always going to be wars that happen as competition over our technology preferences polarizes the users. One such war that has been raging for over a decade is the browser war. This drawing by Shoze has the war heating up between the two bruisers, Chrome and Firefox, while the old king of the playground eats glue. Classic. (h/t: Madison Chevrolet)…

Google Chrome Concept Would Kill the URL Bar

Google Chrome Concept Would Kill the URL Bar

As browser wars continue to heat up, Google Chrome finds itself trailing IE9 in one of its most compelling attributes – viewable web and application space. It’s a “less is more” world as speed and ease are replacing components and functionality for many (thus, the reduced market share for Firefox). To combat this, Google is considering several different options for a future Chrome browser that includes eliminating the URL bar altogether. This is currently the leading concept on the table, narrowly edging the sidebar design because of the incompatibilities with certain website types and hardware….

One Small Step for Flash, One Decently-Sized Leap for Chrome

One Small Step for Flash, One Decently-Sized Leap for Chrome

Chrome has been making strides over the past few months to increase its footprint on Windows computers across the world. Adobe Flash has been heading in the opposite direction as increasing pressure from tech giants such as Apple and Google have put them on the losing end of “what not to put on your website if you want it to work well now and in the future.” With security as a primary concern regarding Flash and its vulnerabilities with hidden malicious code, the roll out of a sandbox for Adobe Flash Player on Chrome is something that will benefit them to a small extent and should add fuel to the growing…

Microsoft Tech Advice: Hotmail is broken Sir, what do I do? Tell them to use Google Chrome!

Microsoft Tech Advice: Hotmail is broken Sir, what do I do? Tell them to use Google Chrome!

Microsoft just made a dumb move. I decided to recreate how I think the conversation went between the tech guy and his boss. Tech guy: It seems a lot of customers are complaining about the new Hotmail. Bugs throughout the site, some of them can’t even log in. Boss: Fix it. Tech guy: That will take a few weeks, what do we do in the mean time. Boss: It works fine on Google’s Chrome, get them to use that. Tech guy: I don’t know about that, don’t you think we should focus on Internet Explorer? Boss: Who’s the boss? Tech guy: You are… Boss: Exactly. After thousands of complaints from customers over their…

Firefox 4 Beta Is Out - A Fanboy

Firefox 4 Beta Is Out - A Fanboy's Fantasy?

I sat here for too long trying to come up with a headline about Firefox, and Chrome, and reflections. I got nothing. It’s the thought that counts. But it’s true – Firefox 4′s beta is out, and so far, it’s looking an awful lot like a certain other browser that’s been taking the Internet by storm in the last year. Immediately noticeable is the much-overhauled interface, the biggest change of which is the new tabs-above-address dealie, again, taken from Chrome. Personally, I always kind of preferred the tabs below – easier to get to via mouse, and all that. Though I guess as a definite ‘power user’, I should…

Doors Open On Google

Doors Open On Google's iTunes-Killing Music Plan

Google seems set to stick it to iTunes in an attempt to carve out its own slice of the music market, hoping that by linking music sales up with its dominant search engine it will be able to achieve a content ecosystem designed to support sales of devices powered by its browser-based Android-one-day-Chrome OS. The company is thought to be closing in on launching a music download service, offering tracks for sale and download. This will be followed by the introduction of a subscription-based music service next year (2011), at least, that is what the Wall Street Journal claims. Negotiations aren’t…

Will Google’s Chrome OS Run Mac, Windows Apps? Maybe...

We all recall Steve Ballmer’s famed ‘Monkeyboy’ chant as he ran round a stage yelling, “Developers, developers, developers,” and despite leaving himself open for a lifetime of ridicule with the move, he was right. A platform is nothing without a strong developer community. And that’s why Google’s Chrome OS will let you run your old Windows and Mac desktop apps from your shiny new Chrome laptop, at least, that’s what people are saying… These rumors began with The Register. That august journal first told us about a process called Chromoting, citing an email from Google software…

Chrome OS Gettin

Chrome OS Gettin' Shiny For Fall Release

Looks like Google’s mythic operating system Chrome OS will be out this fall. “It’s something which we are very excited by … We expect it to reach millions of users on day one,” says Google’s vice president of product management, Sundar Pichai. Hey, Sundar, anything with the Google logo on it and available for free is gonna be big – no need to be modest or anything, now. Questions are flying around such as what devices will feature Chrome OS, or whether the OS even poses a minor threat to Windows, but I’m not sure the latter is even a question – while it’s shaping up to look like a great little OS, hardcore…
