The really quick evolution of Apple product designs

The really quick evolution of Apple product designs

For the last three of decades, Apple has separated itself from the various competitors through company culture, innovative technologies, and stellar marketing efforts. They have built a passionate community around their products based upon a lifestyle-promise – owning an Apple makes the savvy buyer “special” in some way. This is true with their design concepts as well. Even during the clunky technology days of the 80s, their devices held a certain elegance that gave them appeal over the competition. The tradition of clean, understated simplicity continues today with each new product or…

Toyota Fun-Vii concept car is like a "smartphone on 4 wheels"

Toyota Fun-Vii concept car is like a "smartphone on 4 wheels"

It’s been a long time since a concept car has really sparked the imagination of tech geeks and car enthusiasts alike. When Toyota unveiled their latest concept car, the Fun-Vii, at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show this week, everyone from Automobile Magazine to Mashable jumped in to discuss its proposed paradigm-shifting features. It’s clear what the “Fun” part of the name means just by watching the second video below. The “Vii” stands for Vehicle, Interactive, Internet. Inside and out, most aspects of the car can interact with the internet and be controlled by a smartphone. Most surfaces on and within…

Facebook gets nervous, looks to new design

Facebook gets nervous, looks to new design

The world’s largest social network, Facebook, is planning a number of acquisitions that will improve site design and advance mobile features. The company is moving quickly to increase the amount of time users spend on its site, but the company is also eager to launch improvements in response to growing competition, specifically Google+. Facebook is also hoping to make the site run smoother and more reliably. Since its userbase has grown to more than 750 million, Facebook needs to support its growth without adding to the site’s complexity. In total, the company has made 13 acquisitions…

GPS tech turns on a light for the blind

GPS tech turns on a light for the blind

The visually impaired don’t get a lot of help when it comes to next-gen tech to help them better live autonomous lives. For generations, the most cutting-edge apparatus has been an extendable stick. Whee. But designer Xun Ye is turning all that negligence on its ear with the Origin GPS, the first truly next-gen device for the blind. Okay, so it’s still just an extendable stick, but it is to extendable sticks what Snoop Dogg’s favourite low rider is to a rickshaw. Fitted with a GPS unit that tracks the cane-bearer’s whereabouts, the Origin’s built-in handle mic has only a destination to be spoken into…

Our résumés, unfortunately, will never look this good

Our résumés, unfortunately, will never look this good

QR codes are a mixed bag. Some people love ‘em. Some people don’t have the slightest idea as to what they are. But Vector Petit expects you to know what it is, especially if you are planning on reading his résumé. Well, “reading” isn’t exactly the correct term here. If you want to know what we mean, hit up the video and prepare to be amazed….

Mighty Deals review

Mighty Deals review

We have local deals — it’s a been there, done that thing — but what about a deals site that covers creative professionals? They deserve a good deal every now and then too, don’t they? Well, this is why the team here at Techi and WebdesignerDepot has created Mighty Deals. The site’s goal is simple: to offer the best deals for creative professionals. Mighty Deals is most easily described as the creative professional’s Groupon. However, unlike Groupon, Mighty Deals focuses on providing great deals specifically for creative professionals. You won’t find any paradise island getaways offered…

Prefab high-rises may soon dominate city skylines

Prefab high-rises may soon dominate city skylines

Prefab housing isn’t what it used to be. While we typically think of cheap, low-quality mobile homes when think of prefabricated construction, the world’s top architects and engineers are looking to prefab housing as way to create sustainable urban environments. Since prefab housing is affordable, energy efficient, and incredibly quick-to-build, creative designers are hoping to bring this concept to skyscrapers. Next week in Seattle, Sustainable Living Innovations, a group made up of architectural design, construction, and engineering consultants, will unveil what they believe…

Flux Chair: incredible, portable, foldable

Flux Chair: incredible, portable, foldable

Hauling around chairs is somewhat of a pain. Carrying them to the beach or to an outdoor event is more annoying than it should be. But the Flux Chair hopes to change all that, and you know what, they might have something amazing here. But the coolest part about this chair is that it is ultra portable, weighs around 10 pounds, and did we mention that it folds? Now it’s available for purchase in the U.S….

A Guy Creates, Models, Prints, And Plays An Open Source Guitar From Scratch!

A Guy Creates, Models, Prints, And Plays An Open Source Guitar From Scratch!

In a sign that the creativity of people is truly unbound, a guy named BÃ¥rd has designed, printed, and played a guitar that he created entirely on his own. He also is giving away the design for free. And you know what? It looks pretty sweet. Unfortunately, it won’t help anyone play the guitar better. He named this whole project Zoybar Tor, and it looks like nothing more than a slab of material with strings attached, but it is a genuine guitar in the sense of it being, well, a guitar. In the video, BÃ¥rd is clearly rocking the hell out of this thing, and it sounds pretty good to me. Did we mention he open sourced…

Google Brings Art Galleries To The Web

Google Brings Art Galleries To The Web

In what could be the next great evolution in artistic appreciation, Google has decided that all of those wonderful pieces you see in art museums should be viewable by anyone who has the desire to do so. With the power of gigapixel photo technology and the cooperation of several art galleries around the world, Google is doing just that with Art Project. By using similar technology in Google’s Street View, people will soon have the opportunity to take virtual tours of 17 museums from around the world. Cameras, which are mounted on a special trolley, will travel through galleries, take 360 degree pictures,…

Furniture of the Future: A Visibly Invisible Chair

Furniture of the Future: A Visibly Invisible Chair

I’m not going to claim how this could possibly work, but a fellow by the name Ben Alun-Jones has created a chair that defies both eye and imagination, which your derriere will be sure to enjoy. From a distance there is a blending of materials, which wouldn’t normally catch the eye, but up close, an object appears, revealing something not seen before. The Affinity chair was simply an attempt to be creative with art and furniture, but it has turned into an art project of the future. The creator explains it far better than I can: Born out of an attempt at the impossible, the Affinity chair explores our relationship…

'Brickify' Does Exactly What It Says On the Tin

If you’ve ever wanted to convert your favorite logo/photo/image to Lego, now’s your chance. The team at Carsonified has rolled out a new tool, the perhaps lazily-if-poignantly labeled Brickify. The Carsonified team apparently came up with this idea during a trip to their local Lego store, where they realized how cool it would be to construct a Lego version of their own logo. With no tools available to do this online, they decided to create their own. The rest is history. No surprises here: simply upload an image, and bam, it’s Lego’d. You can save the schematic, print out the required inventory,…
