Digg Unburies the Bury Button

Digg Unburies the Bury Button

Digg rolled out several minor changes and one major change this morning. The bury button, removed when they rolled out V4 in September, is back. During the storm of criticism that Digg has been weathering over the last couple of months, the removal of the bury button was one of the most discussed. Kevin Rose tweeted a poll asking the community whether or not they wanted the button back and the results were clear. Functionality changes include: The “Report” feature has been removed. Comments can be done directly from TopNews, MyNews, and Upcoming without having to click through to the story comment…

Did Digg Really Spam Itself? Really?

Did Digg Really Spam Itself? Really?

Stranger things have happened in the social media world. Well, maybe not. Digg, stuck in on the losing side of an all-or-nothing bet with their site when they changed to V4 in the beginning of September allegedly attempted to “stack the deck” on October 15th with an algorithm change designed to highlight top sites such as DailyMail and Time. According to the allegations based upon research performed by Digg user LtGenPanda, Digg (or someone wanting to help Digg) created dozens of accounts to get major mainstream publications back on the front page of their site. The post by LtGenPanda is interesting…

7 Changes Digg Needs To Make To Stop Failing

7 Changes Digg Needs To Make To Stop Failing

Digg’s V4 redesign was more than a change in look and feel. It was a complete shift in the direction of the company that was intended to take it to the next level. It was a risk as admitted by former CEO Kevin Rose. So far, the risk has not paid off and “the next level” is a level below where they were with V3 (and even V2). For Digg to achieve the success they desire, they have to make a few changes. Many things have already changed. Installing a variation of the Upcoming section that had been removed was a start. They brought back the user submissions page, then populated archived submissions. Pagination…

Digg Front Page Spam: Deja Vu All Over Again

Digg Front Page Spam: Deja Vu All Over Again

Spam me once, shame on you. Spam me twice and it’s time to get better moderators. For the second time in three days, Digg has become the pitiful victim of a major spam attack on their Top News section. This isn’t the case of a complex algorithm breach or a hidden exploit being passed around the darkest corners of the Internet. The same spam sites that attacked early in the morning on September 26th hit again before midnight on September 28th. The 4 stories in question were submitted at 10:30 pm Pacific. All four were promoted utilizing a gaping hole of an exploit inherent to V4 (which we will not detail…

Reddit Diggs Reddit.. Geddit?

Reddit Diggs Reddit.. Geddit?

The new Digg has had quite the time settling in. There was always a concern with Digg that stories could be manipulated to reach the front page, that not all stories were organically equal. That feeling has intensified, and one beneficiary has been fellow news site, Reddit. At one point yesterday, five of the top ten stories on Digg originated from Reddit. Was it malice, coincidence or are Digg users simply migrating to a competing service to show their displeasure? Paradoxically, this seems to have intensified now that discussions have formed on both sites about the so-called ‘gaming’ of Digg…

Three Things Digg Needs to Fix In v4 (And Three It Doesn

Three Things Digg Needs to Fix In v4 (And Three It Doesn't)

Regular readers of Techi know that we love Digg and that, most of the time anyway, Digg loves us. So when Digg rolled out version 4 of its social aggregation site – or v4 as many have called it – many, including us, were excited, particularly because there have been rumors of Digg’s waning influence. The refresh promised to not only reinvigorate the platform, but also make it competitive with the massive influence of Facebook and increasing presence of Twitter. Alas, not all is well with the new Digg. In fact, many people are downright angry at some of the changes and flaws with the new site. Complaints…

The Internet is Serious Business: Conservatives Conspire to Rig Digg

The Internet is Serious Business: Conservatives Conspire to Rig Digg

Who said the internet was a sunshiney liberal wonderland of free speech? In an attempt to steer the internet, a group of conservatives calling themselves the ‘Digg Patriots’ have taken it upon themselves to decide which submissions deserve to be lost to the ever-shifting sand of content. These submissions are, of course, anything at all liberal or progressive. I’m going to assume you know how Digg works: a page hits the site and can be voted up (digg’d. Dugg?) or voted down (buried). A simple, democratic concept, and one that regularly sees websites shut down due to the volume of traffic received…

Kevin Rose Breaks Out a Shovel, Dishes Some Dirt on the New Digg

Kevin Rose Breaks Out a Shovel, Dishes Some Dirt on the New Digg

I was sorta worried abut the ‘New Digg’ that’s been in the works for the last little while – with founder Kevin Rose touting a more social experience being brought to the Diggosphere, I was worried he might pull a Facebook and just attempt to emulate Twitter. By the looks of this video, he has done exactly that. However, he actually makes it seem like a smart idea. The new Digg offers content aggregation on two levels – the first in a standard-issue Twitter-esque ‘friends and followers’ model, and, for the heavier stuff, the traditional Digg Top News. I gotta hand it to Kevin; this is not a bad idea. I personally…

Disgracebook: NOW What?

Disgracebook: NOW What?

While I don’t like Facebook due to its stance on privacy, I believe that the outright witch hunt against Facebook isn’t exactly fair, and while this is or is not intentional, it couldn’t have come at a worse time for the social network goliath. Several social networking sites have been accused of sharing users’ personal data with advertisers on the down-low. This includes names and other forms of online ID that enable ad companies to discern specific users. In Facebook’s case, advertisers could also see from which other users’ profiles the clicks were coming. Like, come on, Facebook, not cool….

Digg To Debut Doozy iPhone App

Digg To Debut Doozy iPhone App

Doing its best to keep it real as Facebook and Twitter grab the Zeitgeist, Digg today introduces its all-new iPhone App. Digg founder and CEO, Kevin Rose, hinted at the new software last year, now we learn it offers a deep user experience including support for browsing popular, upcoming, and recent stories across topics. You also get to Digg and bury stories using the app on your iPhone….

Twitter Gets Embed with Web as Digg Redesigns

Twitter Gets Embed with Web as Digg Redesigns

Twitter has announced a new plan to become as pervasive as the Web itself, opening up its @anywhere tech which aims to integrate Twitter into the very fabric of the ‘Net. @anywhere will let people using websites to follow new users or share media directly from the page. It is similar to Facebook Connect in that users will be able to log into websites using their Twitter ID. “Imagine being able to follow a New York Times journalist directly from her byline, tweet about a video without leaving YouTube, and discover new Twitter accounts while visiting the Yahoo home page,” Twitter said on its blog….
