All-new Cadillac ELR coupe to receive Chevy Volt tech

The Cadillac Converj Concept made its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and caused quite a stir. Its sleek lines and innovative electric powetrain helped steal the show. But plans to build the car have been on hold, until now. This week, Cadillac confirmed that the Converj Concept will become a reality in the guise of the upcoming ELR. Using technology from the Chevrolet Volt, the angular ELR coupe will be a performance-tuned extended-range electric coupe that may give Teslas a run for their money. “The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” said Don Butler, vice president-Cadillac Marketing….

Nissan takes the Leaf EV on a tour around the country

Last month, Nissan announced a major milestone, having delivered 4,000 Leaf electric vehicles to customers in the U.S. As a record number of consumers take delivery of the innovative Leaf, Nissan is bringing test drives of the all-electric marvel to 26 cities across the country. Nissan’s “Drive Electric Tour” kicked of late last year, but the automaker recently began the second phase of the tour on July 8 in New York. Currently the Leaf is available in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Tennessee, Texas, Oregon and Washington, but it will become available in additional markets later this year….

After numerous delays, the 2012 Fisker Karma plug-in electric performance car will finally be heading to showrooms by the end of this month. According to British automotive magazine Autocar, Fisker’s first customer will be actor and committed environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, with Al Gore and Colin Powell set to follow. Just five Karmas will be built per week at Fisker’s assembly plant in Finland until November, when production is expected to increase to 300 units per week. Three thousand pre-orders for the car have been tallied, so Fisker expects all Karmas to be accounted for until…

All-electric jet could take to the skies by 2035

The future of aviation was on display at the recent Paris Air Show. Many concepts at the show featured super-fast speeds and low emissions, but one concept, the VoltAir, stood out for its zero-emission, all-electric propulsion technology. As powerful as it is efficient, the VoltAir will be powered by a pair of advanced li-ion batteries beneath its nose, which send power to a pair of co-axial, counter-rotating propellers shrouded at the rear of the aircraft. It’s expected to be far quieter than traditional combustion engine aircraft. Although its innovative propulsion system would radically…

Each of these charging units should be well-equipped to handle the needs of most electric vehicles, and will feature Level 2 chargers and super-fast Level 3 chargers that can power up a car in a matter of minutes….

Your personal Uno transformer can now be pre-ordered

What began as a high school science fair project has quickly turned into an international sensation. The innovative self-balancing two-wheeled Uno 3 scooter can now be pre-ordered. Dubbed as the “world’s first real transformer,” the Uno 3 combines the reduced parking footprint of a Segway with all the benefits of a conventional motorcycle. The Uno 3 can balance solely on its rear wheels in “Uno mode,” enabling unmatched nimbleness with an extremely tight turning radius. This alone will make it ideal for urban settings. When higher speeds are needed, the middle wheel can drop down in…

BMW says electric vehicles are great...for some people

In addition to developing its own all-electric powertrains, BMW has recently formed the new “i” brand to sell next-generation EVs and hybrids. The German automaker’s investment in such technology is staggering, but some execs still don’t believe electricity lives up to the hype. At the New York International Auto Show last week, BMW North American Chairman and CEO Jim O’Donnell commented on some of the automaker’s upcoming products, particularly the ActiveE, which will become available for lease this fall. While the ActiveE is a prelude to the all-electric i3 that’s due in 2013,…

Nissan Reveals All-Electric ESFLOW Sports Car Concept

Nissan generated plenty of buzz from the launch of the all-electric Leaf, the world’s first mass-marketed family sedan EV. But at the Geneva Motor Show, Nissan will unveil a new electric vehicle that’s sure to turn even more heads. The Nissan ESFLOW is an all-electric sports car concept that employs the same technologies installed in the Nissan Leaf. But unlike the Leaf, the ESFLOW features two electric motors that power each of the rear wheels. The car’s laminated lithium-ion batteries are also mounted low to achieve the best possible weight distribution. These differences, according…
