Censorship on the internet: be your own watchdog

Censorship on the internet: be your own watchdog

There’s been a lot of focus, especially in the past year, on internet censorship. From the battle against online piracy to the recent use of Facebook and social media channels to apprehend criminals, many people are stopping to wonder where their privacy ends on the Internet – in my humble opinion, it starts and ends with you. You can hear some of my opinions on the “post” button on your Facebook profile being another symbol of your automatic forfeit of privacy on fishbat’s podcast, Reel Time, but I wanted to take the time to elaborate. Even with the most recent attention, the issue of privacy…

NYPD social media: a touching tribute to fallen brothers

NYPD social media: a touching tribute to fallen brothers

On a recent post on Mashable, New York’s finest are commemorating their fallen brothers of September 11th with Twitter. The NYPD are honoring the victims of the horrific terrorist attacks eleven years ago by tweeting the name and rank of a fallen comrade and linking back to a more detailed Facebook page along with #neverforget. September 11th will be a day that all Americans will never forget. The NYPD’s use of social media is more than just a status update or a celebrity tweet. This honor to fallen heroes reminds us all that social media can still be a platform to instill good amongst us. Let us…

Will David Ebersman be the fall guy for the botched Facebook IPO?

Will David Ebersman be the fall guy for the botched Facebook IPO?

That escalated quickly. As Facebook’s stock continues to plummet, now half of where it started, the New York Times bluntly laid the blame for it on the company’s CFO, David Ebersman. Now everyone seems to have an opinion about the man who has seen much less of the spotlight. Andrew Ross Sorkin, the writer of the original article, said: Mr. Ebersman’s name, however, is mentioned only occasionally, usually in passing and typically only among Silicon Valley’s cognoscenti. And yet if there is one single individual more responsible than any other for the staggering mispricing of Facebook’s…

Mark Zuckerberg will never step down

Mark Zuckerberg will never step down

As Facebook’s stock continues to plummet, more investors are calling for CEO Mark Zuckerberg to step down. They say he is a smart man who built an incredible service and grew it to an unprecedented size for social networks but that he’s not qualified to take the company to the next level (or maintain it at its current level). They say he just isn’t the right person to be running a public company. They say his intentions are not aligned with the needs of the investors the way a CEO should be thinking. Mark Zuckerberg would agree. “There are people who are really good managers, people who can manage a big…

Instagram rolled the dice. They didn't cut a "bad deal".

The presumptions of reporters are often baffling. Bloggers (myself included) are usually worse, but when everyone in the tech blogging world and even respected journalists at the NYTimes start talking about “inexperience” and “hasty negotiations” being behind the losses in paper wealth that the founders of Instagram are taking, I have to wonder why they get paid to write at all. In hindsight, Instagram probably should have cut a different deal with Facebook rather than go along for the ride with the majority of the purchase tied to stock without the protections that most mergers of this type…

Facebook and class action lawyers work out sweet deal for themselves. Judge isn't buying it.

Facebook and the lawyers suing them over their “Sponsored Stories” advertising platform worked out a pretty sweet deal whereby the lawyers would get a nice payout and the social networking giant would get by with paying pennies on the dollar of the revenue they generated from advertising. “And they would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for that pesky judge and his meddling mutt.” Whether US District Judge Richard Seeborg of San Francisco has a dog or not is unknown, but what is known is that he rejected the motion to allow a proposed settlement between Facebook and the team of lawyers who…

I said from the beginning that Facebook

I said from the beginning that Facebook's "buy point" was $17. I may have been too optimistic.

I said over a year ago that Facebook would be the worst tech investment in history. It’s now being confirmed as the worst performing IPO on record. Shortly after launching, I said that it would drop to $17 within a year, over 50% below its opening price. @robfontano @emiltsch OK. 1 Year. I say Facebook will be $17 1 year from today. Over/Under? — JD Rucker (@0boy) June 5, 2012 Sadly, I may have been too optimistic. Shares fell to a new low today after the initial lockout period for early employees ended: Rules expired Thursday that had restricted some early investors from selling down their stakes…

Social searcher makes searching for people on Facebook easy

Social searcher makes searching for people on Facebook easy

Searching on Facebook can be a nightmare when looking for a brand or especially when searching for a person with a popular name. You could spend hours trying to find that recognizable face in a profile picture with your fingers crossed that they actually use a picture of themselves as an avatar. If not, you are spent clicking on profiles hoping they haven’t set their privacy settings to “friends only” so you can creep their page and see if it is the person you are looking to reconnect with on Facebook. As addicting as this process can be for when you finally do find that person adrenaline pumps…

We are the Facebook generation

We are the Facebook generation

There is a new generation, one that is full of conversation, sharing and caring about what others think. No longer does it matter how old you are or from what generation you originated from, whether it be from the Baby Boomer era, or from Gen X to Gen Y, we have co- created a generation on its own, known as the Facebook Generation. Whether you love or despise Facebook, you have either been on it, are on it or have talked about it at some point. This conglomerate of a social site has taken our segregated generational gaps and unified us through the written word. Sure, we could also be known as the Social Media…

Decent news is bad news for Facebook stocks

Decent news is bad news for Facebook stocks

They can’t win, lately. Facebook exceeded expectations by a smidgen by posting $1.18 billion in revenue. Wall Street expected $1.15 billion. The $0.12 earnings per share was exactly what Wall Street anticipate. For most companies, matching expectations would be a good thing, setting a precedent of predictability early on and showing that the experts can call the numbers accurately. For Facebook, it didn’t seem to help as after-hours trading pushed the share price below $25, a dip of over 10%. As Inside Facebook reports, there was some good news as Facebook reported approaching 1 billion users…

How to better target your audience with Google+ and Facebook

How to better target your audience with Google+ and Facebook

Depending on what type of company you have will affect the kinds of content you share on social networks. Your business may be more apt to sharing videos and photos, while others may be less inclined. Either way, the best method in reaching your targeted audience is in knowing which social site best suits the content you put out. …

Facebook post scheduling feature is archaic at launch

Facebook post scheduling feature is archaic at launch

I hate to complain all the time about Facebook functionality. It’s an easy target with a never-ending flow of rants possible. When Facebook announced yesterday that they had added some new functionality for pages, the ability to schedule posts directly to Facebook for pages was both exciting and scary. It was exciting because this has been a functionality that has been needed for a long time and 3rd-party apps have been built by the bucketful to help accomplish this seemingly easy task. It was scary because it was Facebook who had developed it and there is always a risk for idiocy whenever they develop…
