Microsoft goes after Google with humor (that actually worked)

Microsoft goes after Google with humor (that actually worked)

When it comes to funny competitive attack commercials, many have tried and failed to capture the magic of “I’m a Mac”. Microsoft was finally able to put out a cute (not hilarious, but point made) video taking a jab at Google services that will be competing against Microsoft Office 365. Introducing Gmail Man. The video does make some good points that many people know but that most try to ignore. Google has and probably always will algorithmically comb our emails in an effort to serve more relevant ads on their email service. It’s a controversial practice that Google has been able to sidestep for years….

One more feather in the Google+ cap: Themes

One more feather in the Google+ cap: Themes

It’s not that big of a deal, really. It’s just a Chrome extension that someone made to add some spice and life to Google+. Many people will be doing their browsing from mobile devices and clients and may never actually go to plus.google.com very often. Still, it’s really nice to see how quickly and easily it was made. What you see above is the top of Google+ the way I see it on Chrome. I installed this extension and in seconds I had a nice new look and feel. Again, this is nothing earth shattering. Then again, can you do this on Facebook? Yes. It’s just not very easy. Perhaps Google will be rolling out different…

If your web pages are slow, Google will rewrite them for you

If your web pages are slow, Google will rewrite them for you

Google has been on a rampage over the last few years promoting the cause of increasing internet speed. They are pushing for faster connections and faster loading pages. Faster connections are something they can have a direct effect on by helping build a stronger infrastructure, but they can only encourage people to code their websites better to make them faster… … or can they just fix it themselves? They can and will. Page Speed Service is being designed to allow people to point their site’s DNS entry to Google.  They will fetch the content from the servers, rewrite the pages, and present…

Do we even need to ask how Facebook is making money?

Do we even need to ask how Facebook is making money?

With Google+ ramping up (and in some cases recently, ramping down) in its battle against Facebook, many are looking at the revenue models to determine who will eventually be the winner. The goals for both are the same in essence but the way they make money is very different. Google’s goal is to create the central point through which business, particularly local products and trust-factor services, is done. They want individuals to reach businesses through their conglomeration of services and they want businesses to reach the people through the same. It’s a combination of connections and discovery…

The Google+ honeymoon is over

The Google+ honeymoon is over

It was fun while it lasted. Something new and shiny popped into our social media lives in the last month that offered nearly everything we’ve ever wanted. Much like a new significant other, we fawned over how cool this feature was or how amazing that feature was. We declared our undying love for this new network and vowed to someday completely transition away from the old hag run by Mark Zuckerberg. We only saw the good. There was nothing bad other than a few bugs here or there and some quirky taste-choices. It was great. The shotgun wedding that saw 20 million users flock to Google+ in three weeks (versus…

Google+ hits 20 million users in just in 3 weeks

Google+ hits 20 million users in just in 3 weeks

The launch of Google+, Google’s new social network, has gone off without a hitch. After only three weeks, Google+ has pulled in 20 million users according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The report comes just a week after Google Chief Executive Larry Page said that Google+ had more than 10 million users and that they were sharing and receiving more than 1 billion items a day. That’s impressive growth considering Google has made access to the site by invitation only. Google has yet to market the service to the more than one billion monthly visitors who use its search engine, Gmail…

The Google takeover started today in Google Places despite focus on Google Plus

The Google takeover started today in Google Places despite focus on Google Plus

The tech world has been buzzing for a month about Google Plus, the social network that is challenging Facebook for supremacy over our likes, shares, and attentions. While social may be the present and future of Google, something that has been the past, present, and future has changed and points to a change in the way that Google is doing business. Google Places has been a valuable asset for a while. It gives more data about local businesses than many businesses post themselves on their own websites. One portion of Places that has always been appealing is the combined reviews aspect. Until today,…

Is Tom Anderson Google

Is Tom Anderson Google's best cheerleader?

There are a few things that are still up in the air about whether or not Google+ will succeed, whether it can take down Facebook, or whether they can co-exist. One man who has some experience with building a social network has jumped on the bandwagon and been more than just a little active. Tom Anderson, one of the founders of MySpace and the face of the company (literally) during the glory years is out with a vengeance learning about and promoting Google+. He will soon be part of over 70,000 circles and is treating the network as more than just a passing fancy. His posts are often long, thought-out, and…

Move over, Rebecca Black. Google+ has its own annoying song, only catchier

Move over, Rebecca Black. Google+ has its own annoying song, only catchier

Many creations and mini-memes have been popping up for the last few weeks since Google went social with the Google+ network. Now, the folks over at Hanson Dodge Creative have made the unofficial song for the social network. Give them credit for being bold and creative. Give them kudos for putting together interesting and topical lyrics. Do not give them credit or kudos for their music making. It’s about as good as one would expect from a song about a social network. Still, it’s all in the name of fun, so don’t be a hater, either. At least it’s not Rebecca Black. H/T to Techvert. …

Google's headcount headed towards 30,000

There was a ton of information revealed during Google’s Q2 Earnings report earlier this week despite CEO Larry Page trying to turn it into a platform to push Google+. The company is reporting record earnings that are beating The Street’s estimates and overall, things are going swimmingly. One thing that was side note but worthy of mentioning is the tremendous rate of growth the company is showing in its employees. In an economy where jobs are falling and unemployment is rising, it’s refreshing to see Google pushing towards 30,000 employees (even if all of them have bonuses tied into social). The…

The biggest challenge facing Google+ (that nobody is talking about)

The biggest challenge facing Google+ (that nobody is talking about)

Google+ faces dozens of major challenges as it tries to break into the social networking world. Facebook is a fierce and aggressive competitor now that just broke the 3/4 of a billion users mark. Google’s reputation based upon past social attempts is tarnished. A large portion of those who will be social networking in the next year are already doing so – there just aren’t a ton of people who are still “on the fence.” These are big, but there’s a subtle challenge that Google has created for itself that is overlooked but still extremely important. Perhaps it’s not as big as the challenge of trying to launch…
