Are touchscreen devices good or bad for kids?

Today’s kids are digitally adept. That much is very clear to anyone with a toddler and an iPad. They seem to have a natural ability to take a gadget that is touch-driven and make them do magical things, often at a level higher than adults. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? The good parts are clear. Education, imagination, and integrating with today’s world are easy components with which to make arguments for the use of touchscreen devices by children. The good comes with bad components as well as the infographic below depicts. Here are some of the repercussions of having children so engulfed in the use…

I'll wait for Google Glass II (if it makes it that far)

The reviews are rolling in. For the most part, they’re not good. Google may have laid a major egg with Google Glass by building a device that has such a limited set of realistic uses that one might be better off taping a GoPro camera to their cap and wearing a quality Bluetooth headset connected to their smartphone instead. If you’re wanting a 1st-person perspective video for a roller coaster ride, Google Glass may come in handy. Then again, a GoPro would work just fine for that. If you want to be connected to online communication services all the time, Google Glass has you covered. Of course, you’ll…

Technology in the classroom

Technology in the classroom

Well, it wasn’t easy, but integrating more technological resources in schools is finally starting to pay off. Eighty-seven percent of parents think that effective implementation of technology is important to their child’s success in school, and 50 percent label it as extremely important. And a respectable 64 percent of parents think their child’s school is doing a good job with incorporating technology into student achievement. Many teachers find the use of technological devices for classroom use beneficial to their lesson planning and sharing information between other teachers. It…

Yahoo kills off a bunch of features you didn't know existed

As of April 30th, several of Yahoo’s products will be shuttered as part of their initiative to consolidate focus and resources around their core services. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you’re probably not using any of them. You probably didn’t even know some of them existed. Here’s the list that they announced today: Upcoming Yahoo! Deals Yahoo! SMS Alerts Yahoo! Kids (formerly known as Yahooligans) Yahoo! Mail and Messenger Feature Phone Apps It’s not exactly as earth shattering as Google’s announcement that they were killing off their feed reader. Included in the announcement…

Age 3 marked as milestone in media usage

Age 3 marked as milestone in media usage

You have a couple of choices here. You can either mark this down as part of the advancement of society, one that heralds a shift for this generation to truly grow to be the fully digital age. The other option is to toss this into the WTH bin and weep for a generation of children that are growing too dependent on technology. A recent Ipso study shows that the first major milestone for digital media usage is now at three years old, a time when most children are still mastering the art of walking. Researchers have surmised that human babies are extremely receptive to digital stimuli and are able to figure out…

Why the second generation Nexus 7 tablet is a huge win for Google

Why the second generation Nexus 7 tablet is a huge win for Google

From a software perspective, Google has been doing very well. Their Android platform for smartphones is dominant and on tablets it’s been making its mark. Unfortunately, the company still doesn’t see a ton of revenue from it with over 96% of their money coming from online advertising. Hardware is where they want to be and the original Nexus 7 tablet launched last June did pretty well with an estimated 4.7 million sold. This year, they hope to far exceed this with unconfirmed reports of the second generation Nexus 7 tablet launching in July. Google is aiming to ship as many as eight million of the Asustek-made…

Is the end of the Apple era starting?

Is the end of the Apple era starting?

It’s easy to point fingers. It doesn’t take a genius to look at trends and start spouting doom and gloom. When Apple is concerned, it’s even easier, almost wanted, as the company has enjoyed golden child status for several years now. For the first time in a decade, Apple had a quarter that showed negative growth. That alone is not necessarily a telling sign; companies can only continue to show positive numbers for so long. There’s simply no way to sustain it indefinitely and a decade is a long time. However, when you look at the other things that have been happening lately, it’s not out of the realm of…

Samsung to jump into wearable tech segment with a watch of their own

Samsung to jump into wearable tech segment with a watch of their own

Rumors have been spreading about the mythical iWatch from Apple. It will be worn on the risk and is supposed to have similar functionality to the iPhone. Samsung is doing it, too. You’re probably thinking, “Of course they are.” “We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long,” Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said during an interview in Seoul. “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.” The bitter rivalry for mobile domination in the gadget department has…

Are we carrying too many devices?

Are we carrying too many devices?

It’s a gadget-overload world. Society and advancing technologies are making us more gadget heavy than ever, by far. It’s not even close. A recent study showed that we carry 2.9 gadgets on average. To put that into perspective, we have more gadgets on us at any one time than most of have arms. Smartphones are the obvious winner in the gadgets-on-hand segment, followed by laptops and a growing number of tablets that are approaching the half-way mark. MP3 players, hit hard by the musical capabilities of other devices, still account for 40%, and eReaders aren’t quite dead yet, rolling in at 29% despite…

Visualizing the storage and energy use of the whole internet

Visualizing the storage and energy use of the whole internet

Have you ever wondered about where the internet is? Yes, we know that it’s everywhere, that websites sit on servers which transmit their data through a series of interpretation protocols that eventually puts Amazon on our iPad screen. That part is easy to grasp. The sheer size of the servers necessary to run the internet combined with the energy required to sustain the internet – now we’re getting into some pretty massive visualizations. That’s the key to the infographic below by Misdegree. Google, for example, has somewhere between 900 thousand to 1.8 million servers, depending on which estimate…

7 iWatch concepts and why most of them won

7 iWatch concepts and why most of them won't work for Apple

As we said when we first brought up the rumor, the Apple iWatch represents a much-needed infusion of fresh technology to help the mega-company get out of it’s creativity- and stock-rut. Shares have been falling. Sentiment has been waning. They need a winning idea and the iWatch is probably their next big one. As with all things Apple, many talented designers took to their computers to conceptualize the next Apple product. We’ve seen some entertaining renditions of iPhones and iPads over the years, but this is the first truly unique gadget that the company has worked on in a long time. Here are some…

Apple rumored to be hitting the wearable computers arena with the iWatch

Apple rumored to be hitting the wearable computers arena with the iWatch

The first “computer” watches were pretty basic by today’s standards, but they launched a concept that has never been fulfilled. The idea of wearing your gadgets is something that was promised by James Bond, Michael Knight, and most recently Google, but Apple might finally deliver with the rumored iWatch. Employees at Apple told Bloomberg that it’s well beyond the concept phase, even beyond the experimental phase with around 100 product designers working on a wearable piece of tech that can do many of the things that the iPhone and iPad do today. A rumor like this couldn’t have come at a better time….
