The Open Web: A Trashy Ghetto You

The Open Web: A Trashy Ghetto You'd Never Want To Visit? Or Something Else?

Imagine a city with stores that look like jail cells, dark alleys with no end in sight, graffiti written all over the walls, and thugs on every street corner. This city is the open web, containing Google, Yahoo, Craigslist, eBay, Paypal, and others. Now imagine a city with multi-million dollar mansions, paved streets with clean sidewalks, beautiful parks with freshly-cut grass, and happy people enjoying every second of life. This is Apple’s ecosystem, led by the iPhone, iPad, and iTunes. That’s a pretty drastic comparison, wouldn’t you say? Well, this is how Virginia Heffernan of The New York…

Dell Streaks To Catch Up to iPad

Dell Streaks To Catch Up to iPad

Dell has made its entry into the tablet market official today and we can now expect to see the 3G enabled smartphone and tablet in the UK as early as June and later this summer in the US. Dell formally announced the device today on their official company blog. Boasting a 5 inch touch screen, the Streak will be almost half the size of Apple’s 9.7 inch iPad. “I’ve been at Dell for 16 years, and I don’t think there’s ever been more buzz around a single Dell product than this,” wrote Lionel Menchaca, chief blogger for the Round Rock, Tex., company. “In my view, that’s for good reason. Hardware and design-wise,…

What happens when you combine the iPad and Velcro

What happens when you combine the iPad and Velcro

If you were stranded on an island and could either have an iPad or Velcro, what would you choose? I mean, on one hand, the iPad is a multi-purpose piece of technology that users are going crazy over. Velcro is, well, an ingenious invention but not that exciting. Velcro doesn’t seem to get the credit it deserves. The iPad will get updated over the years, but velcro hasn’t changed since day one. A design so innovative, it needs no improvement. So what if someone decided to put both these technologies together. Yes, you might want to sit down for this. GENIUS!!!!!! An iPad as your on-dash GPS, or a digital…

Apple Eats Apple: The iPad Turns Cannibal On the Mac

Apple Eats Apple: The iPad Turns Cannibal On the Mac

Apple has hit 200 thousand units sold per week for the iPad. If you’re bad at math, that’s more or less a couple of iPads. Amazingly, this figure is also a pretty big milestone – according to Mike Abramsky, an analyst for RBC Capital Markets, this means the iPad is now outselling the Mac itself. The future of computing is nigh, it seems. Suddenly my Mac Pro seems, like, all ancient and stuff. “We believe Apple is now selling >200k iPads/week, greater than US Macs (est. 110k Macs/week) and just below US iPhone 3GS first quart (246k/week),”said Abramsky, attributing the mega-strong sales to…

iPad App Store Goes International At Last

iPad App Store Goes International At Last

Apple is finally releasing the iPad App Store to the international market. Until now, opening the App Store using an account anywhere outside the US resulted in a message stating that the App Store is not available in your region yet. Still missing from the store are Apple iWork apps Pages, Keynote and Numbers. Users were easily able to circumvent the problem by creating a US account, but no word yet on how easy it is or if it is even possible to transfer apps purchased with a US account to your own native country account. Apple is about to begin shipping iPads to nine additional countries on May 28, including…

How Bill Gates Predicted The iPad While Steve Jobs Watched

How Bill Gates Predicted The iPad While Steve Jobs Watched

Cast your mind back to June 2007, when Apple CEO Steve Jobs appeared at D:All Things Digital alongside Microsoft’s Bill Gates. Now watch this video in which Gates describes his vision of the future of computing, which sounds remarkably like, erm, an iPad…. “I don’t think you’ll have one device. I think you’ll have a full-screen device that you can carry around and you’ll do dramatically more reading off of that… yeah, I mean, I believe in the tablet form factor [...] You’ll have some way of having a hardware keyboard and some settings for that. And then you’ll have the device that fits in your…

iSpy With My iPad Eye In The Sky

iSpy With My iPad Eye In The Sky

There are two trends that the first half of 2010 will be remembered for: Apple’s iPad and privacy invasion, care of Facebook and Google. Surely the killer trend would be the one that combines them both? An iPad controlled video blimp is a wonderful thing. BreakfastNY has modified a “BlimpDuino” and added a camera and built an iPad app to control the whole shebang. You can even control the blimp by tilting the iPad, a nice touch. For some reason, the creators also built in some augmented reality, with faces of people seen through the video camera being displayed as Munny characters. No instructions…

Is the iPad Cannibalizing iPod Sales?

Is the iPad Cannibalizing iPod Sales?

iPod sales are declining; and with the first set of sales data from the US being released, the culprit for this drop may be Apple’s own iPad. The new research report from the NPD Group, a market researcher, shows a 17 percent drop in the year-to-year April sales of the iPod. Luckily for Apple, the iPad has not had any effect on the sales of their Mac computers, which are up at a healthy 39 percent. It should have come as no surprise for Apple that with the release of the iPad that their other products are suffering. And, in fact, iPod sales have been falling gradually since the inception of the iPhone; the…

Adobe Attempts Lightroom and other Apps for the iPad Despite Concerns

Adobe Attempts Lightroom and other Apps for the iPad Despite Concerns

A new effort has Adobe attempting to bring imaging software, such as Lightroom, to the iPad and other tablet computers despite the bad blood between them and Apple. The project team leader is worried about the control Apple keeps over its software. The existence of Lightroom on the iPad could convince many photographers to make an investment in the tablet PC due to its mobility, but will Apple let Lightroom for the iPad ship? Lately, Apple has voiced its beef against Adobe’s Flash but nothing has ever been explicitly said about the Lightroom software, despite it being competition for Apple’s…
