A Screen Made of 25 iPads

A Screen Made of 25 iPads

If you happened to find yourself at Tokyo Designer’s Week this year, you surely saw iProject25 – a just-shy-of-completely-monstrous display made of 25 iPads, resulting in one hell of a large interactive screen. The use of iPads to make an omniPad is hardly why I, for one, am impressed. We were always destined to eventually see a YouTube video of someone doing exactly this. Where I’m impressed, frankly, is in the concept. Commissioned by Japan’s Environmental Ministry, iProject25 is meant to be a metaphor for the human race’s impact on the harmony of nature. Created by musician TaQ (of Dance Dance…

RIM Flaunts Flashier Browser - Apple Fans Gon

RIM Flaunts Flashier Browser - Apple Fans Gon' Hate

You just hit ‘play’ on a video touting the PlayBook’s allegedly ‘faster’ and all-around more awesome browser than the iPad’s. And the proof would appear to be in the pudding – the PlayBook’s browser DOES appear to be a fair bit faster, rendering pages in a relative jiffy when put beside the iPad’s sudden plod. The video also demonstrates the iPad’s lack of Flash (again), and even shows off some fancy Java rendering. But the big question here is: who cares? That’s a stupid question. Of course people care, but jeez, RIM… is it really wise to prod Apple fanboys like that, especially when the iPad 2 is…

Gorillaz Record New Album Via iPad

Gorillaz Record New Album Via iPad

I’m one of those who denies the iPad’s usefulness as a creative tool. Sure, there are cute little apps for that let you make cute little tunes, but despite a few notable, robust apps, there’s not much real use a serious musician can get out of an iPad. Apparently, Gorillaz creator Damon Albarn doesn’t agree with me, and is planning to release a new Gorillaz album before Christmas – the second one this year, following the celebrated Plastic Beach. The schtick? “I’ve made it on an iPad,” says Albarn to NME. “I hope I’ll be making the first record on an iPad.” As far as we know, dude, you will be. “I…

Apple Goes "Electric" With the iPad

Apple Goes "Electric" With the iPad

While yours truly still misses the “Get a Mac” advertisements from yesteryear, Apple’s new advertisements, the ones for the iPad in particular, are much more friendly, inviting, and less patronizing. The iPad has been the recipient of Apple’s advertising genius. This latest round features how your iPad can be electric — guitar, that is. They even included a remix of the musical jingle at the end. Rock on, iPad!…

Apple's Global Domination Continues

If someone asks you which company is most likely to take over the world, there should be little question in your mind as to which company it would be: Apple. That’s because Apple, along with the Steve Jobs’ brilliance, knows how to make products that the world desires. So it should come as no shock that the latest statistical evidence is suggesting that the plan is working. The company has a total control of mobile music players, significant share of mobile phones, a growing share of desktop and laptop computers, and now we learn that the company controls 95 percent of the tablet computing market —…

Jobs Rants At Q4 Earnings Results

Jobs Rants At Q4 Earnings Results

Steve Jobs rarely appears at Apple’s financial conferences, but when he does, oh boy, lookout. Steve Jobs isn’t shy by any means, but he’s definitely not a loudmouth, so his confidence at yesterdays earnings announcement is either his pride getting the better of him, or he wants to make sure we’re all watching while his company makes the future. Jobs stopped just short of cattiness while describing RIM and Google’s position in the mobile market. On RIM, Jobs noted that they have reached the end of their competitive advantage, and are faced with the difficulty of adapting to a new model. “We’ve…

GoodReader For iPad Gets an Update

GoodReader For iPad Gets an Update

GoodReader, the iPad PDF viewer gets an important update today. The app now supports annotations, including notes and sketches. The app is considered by many to be a must-have for viewing documents on the go, and this addition will help users do more with their iPad besides consume content. The great news is that the notes and highlights are visible in the PDF document when you reopen it or when you transfer it to your computer. The bad news is that it does this by adding the information to the PDF file, meaning that if you forward the PDF to someone else, they have no way of viewing the document without…

Ballmer Punished For Kin And Lack Of iPad Competitor

Ballmer Punished For Kin And Lack Of iPad Competitor

Steve Ballmer did not receive his maximum bonus this year because of missteps at Microsoft. The bald sweaty blob received a cash bonus of $670,000 at the end of June, but the payout is 50% less than his potential maximum bonus. Ballmer was apparently slapped on the wrist for failures such as the Kin and Microsoft’s failure to bring an iPad competitor to market. Ironically, despite these failures the blob was still able to raise Microsoft sales 7% to a record high of $62.5 billion. On top of the bonus, Ballmer received a total salary of $1.34 million, a 6% raise from 2009. While Microsoft is apparently…

Chrome OS on the iPad - Real or Not?

Chrome OS on the iPad - Real or Not?

A couple days ago, a photo began circulating ’round and about the sphere of Google’s Chrome OS running on an iPad. A picture is worth a thousand words, not the least of which are ones like ‘untruth’, ‘falsehood’, and ‘Photoshoppery’. That last one may be fictional, but google is a verb now, so whatever. In any case, the man behind the photo has leaked more proof of his achievement by posting an unbelievably brief video clip of the device in action, which may or may not provide his tale with more credibility – although, like the photo, this could be just as fake. As the YouTube comments suggest, this could…

Bets Are On To Name The iPad Killer

The competition for the much-desired title of ‘iPad Killer’ is hotting up, and analysts and bookies are paying close attention to the race. Bookmaker.com sets the odds for the next company to release a tablet PC in 2010 as the following: LG                               +300    25% HTC                            +100    50% SHARP                       +300    25% MOTOROLA            +300    25% NOKIA                       +150   …

Least Surprising Rumor Ever: 2nd Gen iPad Planned For Early 2011

Least Surprising Rumor Ever: 2nd Gen iPad Planned For Early 2011

In the “no shit, sherlock” category this morning comes news that Apple is most likely planning to release a new iPad in the first quarter of 2011. Touch panel and glass suppliers are ramping up production for a new touch screen product with components shipping in the first quarter of next year. Rumored additions to the next generation iPad include a front-facing camera to allow FaceTime video capability. Some have speculated that the next gen iPad will include a smaller, 7″ model to bridge the gap between iPhones and iPod touch and the much larger iPad. The iPad has been picking up momentum since…

Turning A Photo Viewer Into A Tablet for $170

Turning A Photo Viewer Into A Tablet for $170

Somewhere between DIY and iPad sits this hacked Insignia Infocast. The Infocast is a strange beast to begin with – little more than a digital frame on steroids, the thing surprisingly packs an 800MHz processor, 2 gigs of memory, a touchscreen, Wi-Fi, and two USB ports. And it’s only $170 bucks. Really, it’s the perfect candidate for someone to hack open and mod the Chumby Linux inside. And, of course, that’s exactly what’s been done. By tweaking the device to run a WebKit-based browser, the savvy hackers have transformed the device into not-quite-an-iPad. But for $170 bucks, I’m sure not complaining….
