Apple to Hold Press Conference, Hopefully Ending the Signal Saga

Apple to Hold Press Conference, Hopefully Ending the Signal Saga

This signal thing has gotten blown way out of proportion, yeah? Totally ridiculous. And I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t done my part – people like me have made this problem far more a PR issue than a hardware one. But are you really gonna blame us? You want your free bumper, right? Then sit tight, and just let us poke Big Steve some more about this. Just a bit more. I swear, we’re almost done, then he’s all yours. Five more minutes. Actually, it seems everyone’s prodding may have worked. Apple has called a press conference tomorrow that will hopefully shed some real light on the issue, and what Steve &…

iPhone 4 Signal Fiasco: Apple Gives You a Hand

iPhone 4 Signal Fiasco: Apple Gives You a Hand

The Great Signal Caper continues. Is it alright to call it a caper now? More things should be called capers. Anyway, Apple has responded to customers’ never-ending pleas for an end to the iPhone 4′s signal issue by offering an accessory previously unbethunkable: the iHand. Taking a more utilitarian approach to product design, the iHand is all about function. Simply slot your iPhone 4 into the iHand’s hand, hold the iHand’s hand in your hand, dial a number, and enjoy worry-free calls of the clearest crystal clarity! Truly, Cupertino’s been boiling midnight oil BP-style on this. The iHand is available…

iPhone 4 Update Sorta Kinda Addresses Signal Issue, a Little, But Not Quite

iPhone 4 Update Sorta Kinda Addresses Signal Issue, a Little, But Not Quite

Having acknowledged the now-infamous iPhone 4 ‘death grip’, Apple has rushed an update out the door that… well, it doesn’t really solve the problem at all. What the update does do is fix an apparent second problem that was displaying signal bars incorrectly. Apparently, your iPhone 4 has been lying to you, optimistically displaying four or five bars sometimes when it should be displaying one or two. Apple tells us it had something to do with the algorithm governing the definition of each level of strength. Great. So, in a nutshell, this means that my hypothetical iPhone 4 can now more accurately…

The most expensive iPhone 4 in the world

The most expensive iPhone 4 in the world

Sure, there might be some kind of problem with the signal bar — perhaps it is software, as Apple claim, perhaps not — one day we’ll know. Meanwhile the adoring iPhone loving or loathing public might as well get their gossip going on this O.T.T. rich person’s creation, the $20,000 diamond-encrusted iPhone 4 from designer, Stuart Hughes. Hughes likes to bling out his Apple devices — you’ll usually find at least one diamond and gold and dragon’s claw-encrusted Apple product emerge shortly after each Apple product introduction. (OK, I made up that bit about dragon’s claws). Take a look…

Are You Really Gonna Wait All Month for a White iPhone 4?

Are You Really Gonna Wait All Month for a White iPhone 4?

You’ve gotta hand it to those who are holding out for white iPhones. There’s something to be said about the degree of willpower required to remain completely uncool until the end of the month, when Apple will finally release the fairer-coloured device into the wild, where it will no doubt be torn to pieces by frothing Applites – some of whom will probably already own the damn thing in black. Don’t give me that look. They know who they are. You don’t have that sort of willpower, of course. You’re weak – but you have really steady hands. Perhaps your grandfather was a watchmaker. Yes, your grandfather…

Apple Vs. Everyone: The BGR Chronicles

Apple Vs. Everyone: The BGR Chronicles

The war between Apple and, well, everyone else is raging, and Boy Genius Report is currently the front line fighter. For those who don’t know, Boy Genius Report posted a story on July 1 about an email exchange between Steve Jobs and an irate customer not happy with the reception on his shiny new iPhone 4. The email exchange caused some backlash, mostly because Jobs’ alleged response, telling the customer to “calm down” was considered by most to be arrogant. But the next day, Apple PR issued a statement declaring that the conversation was fake, that Steve Jobs had not written the emails. Well, Boy Genius…

Apple PR Speaks On iPhone 4 Reception Issue

Apple PR Speaks On iPhone 4 Reception Issue

Apple today released an announcement regarding the iPhone 4 reception issue, and guess what – it’s not their fault, and there isn’t really an issue at all. Apple’s PR department spoke out about the issue that has become a major concern among early adopters, although it seems only a small minority of people are actually seeing the issue. Apple reports that the problem is “both simple and surprising”. The method used by phone manufacturers to calculate the available signal has been updated recently, and the iPhone 4 uses the old way. Apple is essentially saying that the drop in signal isn’t actual,…

iPhone 4 Gets Shot, Microwaved - Y

iPhone 4 Gets Shot, Microwaved - Y'know, Phone Stuff

Cripes, people, it hasn’t even been a week yet. Apple’s working on a fix, alright? I promise. There’s no need to show this level of hostility right outta the gate. Jeez. Some people. I TELL YA. Anyway, the headline pretty much says everything that needs to be said – you came for some iPhone phuck-uppery, right? iPhone 4 versus sniper rifle. There you go. Just hit play. Bada-bing, bada-google. I’d complain that they should have hired a better sniper for a more interesting shot, but things look so pretty at 500fps that I’m willing to let it slide. But wait! I also brought an iPhone 4 being microwaved. You…

iPhone 4 Signal Saga Continues - Did Apple Know?

iPhone 4 Signal Saga Continues - Did Apple Know?

News of the day seems to be a series of job postings at Apple – no less than eight – for antenna engineers. Posted on June 23rd, the day before the launch of iPhone IV (or, 4, if you’re not into epic things), the postings raise some suspicion about the alleged signal failure problem, and whether or not Apple might have suspected something was up with the device before it hit the market – or at least after the flood of signal complaints on the afternoon of the 23rd. Whatever the case, Apple isn’t prepared to dick around. Applicants “will be expected to performance radiation performance measurements, create…

NFL Star Pays a Young Girl $2000 For... Her iPhone 4

NFL Star Pays a Young Girl $2000 For... Her iPhone 4

Celebrities will do just about anything for an iPhone 4. While actor Jason Bateman was passionately booed as he skipped thousands of people in line at the Los Angeles Apple Store on opening day, NFL lineman Stacey Andrews was a little more discreet in his quest. Popping into a Wal-Mart in Little Rock on Thursday, Andrews bumped into Brittany Hightower, who happened to be holding the last iPhone 4 in stock. Unfazed, he proceeded to offer her a thousand bucks for the device. Hightower refused… until the offer was bumped to $2000. You don’t say no to $2000. That’s just good business, and Hightower…

3 Days, 1.7 Million iPhones - Apple Doesn

3 Days, 1.7 Million iPhones - Apple Doesn't F*** Around

For all Odin’s love, Apple, slow down. You’re gonna hurt all those Foxconn workers (further) with the sheer velocity of those iPhones whizzing out of the plant. “This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history” said Big Steve of the accomplishment. Between Thursday and Saturday, 1.7 million iPhone 4s (iPhones 4? Pluralization is gonna suck until the need to specify the model dies down) entered the waiting hands of rabid line-waiters everywhere. That said waiting hands cause signal degradation is unimportant – this is still an intense achievement. “Even so,” continued Jobs,…

Will A Software Update Fix The iPhone Reception Problem?

Will A Software Update Fix The iPhone Reception Problem?

Word on the street (at least where AT&T reception can be received) is that a software fix might be coming on Monday to resolve the iPhone 4 reception problem, deemed the “Death Grip”. Apparently, users will be able to download an update that resolves the issue of users holding their iPhones in a certain way, leading to poor signal and dropped calls. The update will install a small messaging system that simply pops up a headshot of Steve Jobs on the phone’s screen, with a speech bubble of him reminding you “don’t hold the iPhone like that!”. Of course I’m being facetious. It is possible that Apple…
