iPhone Controlled 3D Display For.. Something

iPhone Controlled 3D Display For.. Something

Okay, I’ve watched the video three times now, and I still don’t entirely get what this thing is actually used for. But I’ve run it through the Techi.com buzzword checker, and the readings are off the charts. “3D”, “iPhone” and “hovering” are all included, plus the device was custom-built. Essentially the device, called a Floating Forecaster, uses airbed pumps to raise a ping pong ball a couple of inches in the air. The cool bit is that the 30 airbed pumps are controlled by a touch app on an iPhone, with the user able to exert an amazing level of control on each ball, or multiple balls. Go check out the video,…

Patent Shows How Apple Might Brick Your Jailbroken iPhone

Patent Shows How Apple Might Brick Your Jailbroken iPhone

Jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod or iPad might now be legal in some areas of the world, but Apple still ain’t happy about it. A new patent shows how Apple might one day be able to detect and disable compromised devices. The patent, which is elaborate and lengthy, posits that devices which are lost, stolen or hacked are a risk to users peace of mind, and for this reason Apple hopes to kindly disable the hacks or even brick the device. The source of the issue is that while users may choose to hack their device, the jailbreak methods are all essentially taking advantage of security flaws. Apple views jailbreaks…

Sony Laughs Off Apple in Latest PSP Ad

Sony Laughs Off Apple in Latest PSP Ad

It would seem Sony is setting something of a double standard, taking an indirect dig at Apple in its latest PSP ad. Though the phone is never mentioned by name, it’s clear ‘Josh Rose’, apparently kidding himself, is bragging about having downloaded, er… ‘Game Castle’ on an iPhone (looks like tight graphics if I’ve ever seen them). The commercial goes on to essentially say that for $9.99, you could be getting far greater and more playable games than the typical iPhone fare. And guess what? It’s not wrong. The double standard of which I’m speaking, though, is the fact that, well… isn’t Sony planning…

Apple vs. Motorola: Who Can Lock It Down

Apple vs. Motorola: Who Can Lock It Down

Apple has been fighting hard against the jailbreak community for years now. Every update Apple dishes out feels like its a direct punch to the kidney to those wishing to install third-party applications to their device. Another heavyweight, Motorola,  is taking large steps to lock down their new devices as well. Efuse Chip The new Motorola Droid X which touts impressive specs such as a 1ghz processor, 4.3” high resolutions screen, an 8 MP camera, and an impressive HDMI output up to 720p. It is currently running the latest version of Android (2.1), with the understanding that when Froyo (2.2)…

Because Your Camera Phone Really Does Suck

Because Your Camera Phone Really Does Suck

Let’s face it – your phone’s camera sucks. I don’t care if you’ve got a fancy-assed iBerry Droidstorm Triple X Premium. Its camera sucks. Phone cameras just suck. That said, we need our phone’s camera. Y’know, for taking pictures of stuff (I sure can’t afford a Nikon). But that doesn’t make them suck any less. What are we to do? Do the opposite of fret, of course. The photophiles over at Photojojo have decided to entreat the lesser photographer to a set of lenses that help your camera phone become the faux DSLR you never wanted to pay for. And you’ll never have to, because these little guys are not only…

iPhone Users Have More Sex Than Android Users

iPhone Users Have More Sex Than Android Users

Hey, before you get all huffy over the headline, don’t call me an Apple fanboy. I don’t own an iPhone, and I’m not the one making this claim, yo. But allegedly, it’s true. According to a study by OKCupid, “iPhone users aren’t just getting f**ked by Apple”, and the dating site has crunched some numbers to prove it. Apparently, according to the findings, 30-year-old iPhone users have twice as many sexual partners on average as 30-year-old Android users. Additionally, an age-to-partners graph indicated that iPhone users consistently lead in… er… number of conquests. The data is part of a more…

Eric Schmidt: There

Eric Schmidt: There's A Whole Lotta Android Goin' On

On a happier Google note: according to CEO Eric Schmidt, 200,000 Android handsets are now being activated every day. That’s an awful lot of handsets, and is double May’s numbers. Hell, it’s 40,000/day more than June. Android fever, folks. Schmidt sat down for a hardcore gangsta rap session with reporters after his panel at the Techonomy conference, where he let some facts and figures fly about Android, not the least revealing of which was that he “loves the success of the iPhone” due to how much it drives search – search, of course, being what keeps that Android money coming in. Brilliant, Schmidt….

DisgraceTime - Adult Industry Has Eyes For iPhone 4

DisgraceTime - Adult Industry Has Eyes For iPhone 4

I have a feeling Apple’s FaceTime is going to play out just fine. How can I be sure? Because now, the adult industry is on board. Steve’s gonna be so pissed. Like it or not, the adult industry has always been a (and arguably the) major player in deciding which entertainment technologies live, and which die. After all, it was porn that popularized the VCR. It was porn that championed VHS over Beta. It was porn that helped usher in the DVD. While unsavoury, porn is nothing if not on the cutting edge of tech – adult film producers are some of the earliest adopters. And now, they’ve got their sights set on FaceTime….

Apple Peel Transforms Your iPod Touch Into An iPhone... Assuming It Exists

Apple Peel Transforms Your iPod Touch Into An iPhone... Assuming It Exists

Isn’t the iPod Touch the worst, guys? It’s an iPhone for all intents and purposes, save the notable exception of, y’know… the phone part. That’s gotta be frustrating. Enter the Apple Peel 520. Developed by a company fit to call itself Yosion, the Apple Peel is a fancy hack which attempts to do the impossible: turning your (presumably jailbroken) iPod Touch into… well, not an iPhone proper, but close enough. Retailing for a rumoured ¥300 – ¥500 ($44 – $74), the case allegedly also acts as a beefed up battery (800mAh) to account for all the calls you’ll be making. That is, of course, if you’ll be…

...And They Never Made Real Phone Calls Again.

...And They Never Made Real Phone Calls Again.

And the peasants rejoiced; For iOS4 was released, and so did it support multiple tasks; And Steven smiled, for it was good. And for a time, it was good. And then, so too did come Skype v2.0.1, and so it did support the multiple tasks; And it did threaten with a totally scary voice, “[Skype 2.0.1] supports multitasking. This means you can receive Skype calls while other apps are running, even when your iPhone is locked.” And the peasants rejoiced; for this could essentially all but replace their regular phone service, on top of making cheap international calls. And thus did this ring true; For Skype…

Unfortunate Thief Not Too Bright About Tech

Unfortunate Thief Not Too Bright About Tech

Yes, we’ve all read the iPhone theft/loss stories where the owner happily retrieves their lost phone, but I couldn’t resist posting this story about a thief who is not only ignorant about technology but also extremely unlucky. Horatio Toure is a thief who doesn’t know about technology. If he did, he wouldn’t have tried to steal an iPhone, because he would know that the chances of the user being able to locate their phone using Find My iPhone are pretty high. Still, throwing caution and intelligence to the wind, Toure jumped on his bicycle, rode up to a woman in the South of Market neighborhood in San…

Filemaker Announces Filemaker Go For iPhone

Filemaker Announces Filemaker Go For iPhone

Filemaker, the Mac database maker has announced an iPhone and iPad native client called Filemaker Go. The app will not allow database creation, but will provide users a way to view and edit databases while on the go. Filemaker Go will run most Filemaker Pro databases created in version 7 or later. It’s a hefty task to cram all the power and capability of Filemaker into an iPhone or even an iPad, but the team thinks they’ve done a good job. At $20 and $40 for iPhone and iPad respectively, it’s not exactly dirt cheap, but users of the Filemaker app are normally a dedicated, fanatical bunch, and there’s little…
