Report: new MacBook Airs will arrive in June

According to reports, Apple’s new MacBook Air is slated to be launched in June or July. In typical Apple fashion, these reports have been neither confirmed nor denied, but the potential launch would come at an appropriate time considering the recent revamping of Apple’s MacBook Pro and iMac product lines. So what’s expected if the revamping of the Air comes to fruition? For starters, it’s likely to get Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors. It’s also likely that Air will receive the Thunderbolt high-speed port. Of course the Air is also about maximum portability, so Apple may cut the dimensions…

Apple Attempts Avoidance of Antennagate 2 with New Patent

Apple Attempts Avoidance of Antennagate 2 with New Patent

Antennagate sure was a mess, wasn’t it? Maybe ‘mess’ is the wrong word. All things considered, it was pretty tidy mess, and even included sweet pictures of Apple’s underground antenna testing crypts. Was it the biggest case of mass hysteria the tech world has ever seen? Could’ve been – but either way, according to this new patent, it seems Apple isn’t taking any chances. The patent details a new design that would apparently render the Apple logo itself as a functional antenna in both iOS and Mac devices – a move that could more or less end any to all interference by our fat, sausagey fingers. How well…

MacBook Air Rumors Reach Fever Pitch

MacBook Air Rumors Reach Fever Pitch

With Apple’s “Back To The Mac” event now only three days away, the rumor mill is churning at a rate of knots. Engadget has a picture that is supposedly the new MacBook Air, although it brings into question a contradictory rumor that the new Air would be only 11.6″. MacRumors updates with some new information, including possible specs. They claim the new Air will be available in 11.6″ and 13.3″ sizes, both unibody design and thinner than the current model. The new Air will also apparently all contain SSD cards rather than traditional hard drives. They will use Core 2 Duo CPUs with 2GB of RAM. The photo…

11.6" Macbook Air On The Way?

11.6" Macbook Air On The Way?

Finally, an Apple rumor I can really get my teeth into. AppleInsider reveals that Apple may be planning to release a smaller, lighter version of their ailing Macbook Air laptop. In a time of lousy rumors, this one actually piqued my interest. With all the talk about the iPad and competing tablets, it’s refreshing to see Apple remembers some people still actually use computers. It’s been three years since the Macbook Air debuted to mixed reception, generally hailed as an extremely niche product for those who travel a lot and don’t require a huge amount of power. Perhaps now with much more experience…

Apple Looking Into A Telephonic MacBook - That Even SOUNDS Retro

Apple Looking Into A Telephonic MacBook - That Even SOUNDS Retro

Even I have to admit that wandering around town looking for an unguarded WiFi signal blows, and I’m not about to drop the cost of a USB internet stick. My laptop cost enough on its own, thanks. Luckily, it would seem Apple’s looking into it, recently filing patents for a telephonic laptop featuring a magnetically coupled antenna. Mobile communications being what they are, this would only seem to make sense, and in terms of tech, is a great step forward. But on the other hand, as a designer, I’m left wondering. If Apple has a commitment to one thing, and one thing only, that is form factor. An Apple product…

Apple Tweaks Low End MacBook

Apple Tweaks Low End MacBook

Apple didn’t yell too loudly about this one but the low end, white Unibody MacBook got a refresh this morning. The black (or white) sheep of Apple’s laptop family got a boost this morning, with a faster CPU and built-in graphics card to match the entry level MacBook Pro and better battery life. The little white laptop that could is still missing a few crucial specs that its bigger brothers get to boast about. For an additional $200, the 13″ MacBook Pro boasts an SD Card slot, 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB and the shinier, tougher aluminum enclosure. The white MacBook is a decent performer, although it really…

Apple Patents More Stuff, Continues Sliding Downhill

Apple Patents More Stuff, Continues Sliding Downhill

Hold your horses, guys – I don’t mean ‘as a company’. Apple is wonderful, we all love Apple. But where Apple is ‘sliding downhill’, truly, is in their interaction design. I used to be a guy who liked to use his iPod from his pocket. Ever since the Touch/iPhone, I can no longer do that due to lack of tactile feedback, and now Apple has filed a patent application to bring this non-tactile experience to the Macbook Pro’s aluminum casing, of all things, in the form of ‘invisible buttons’. …GHOST BUTTONS! Spooky. Yeah, it’s still really cool (especially what appears to be a phantom Click Wheel build into…

Apple iPhone Drives Record Quarter, iPad Sales

Apple iPhone Drives Record Quarter, iPad Sales 'Shocking'

Strong iPhone and Mac sales and the continued dominance of Apple’s iPod drove the company to deliver a new record March quarter in revenue and profit. Admitting these results, chief operating officer Tim Cook also confirmed iPad sales so far have “shocked” company execs. Asked how the iPad compares to netbooks, Cook said, “To me, it’s a no-brainer. It’s sort of 100 to 0. I can’t think of a single thing a netbook does well.” Returning to the results, Apple CEO, Steve Jobs said: “We’re thrilled to report our best non-holiday quarter ever, with revenues up 49 percent and profits…

The new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models feature Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and Apple’s new automatic graphics switching technology that toggles seamlessly between powerful NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and energy efficient Intel HD Graphics…
