BYOD: The truth about telecom expense management

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is quickly becoming the new norm in business. In fact, 75% of all businesses already allow their employees to connect their personal devices to their business network, and while this accounts for many happy workers, it can also make things complicated. The milestone of 15 billion network connected devices is creeping up in 2015; yes, that’s 15 billion. That many devices accounts for more than two per each person on the planet. And with those numbers, businesses should expect to see a service charge increase from their BYOD-ing. Let’s look at the 15 billion/2 per…

Email isn

Email isn't dead and mobile devices are to blame

There was a time not too long ago when technology bloggers and pundits (myself included) believed that email was going away. We thought that the system would be replaced by Facebook messaging, IM, social networking, and other variations of online communication that were more elegant and less abused than email. We were wrong. I was wrong. We failed to see one major flaw in our judgment. Despite so many people being on Facebook and other forms of communication, everyone has an email address. Even with the necessity of many to check their other forms of communication regularly, almost obsessively,…

Social networking ties gaming as #1 mobile activity

Social networking ties gaming as #1 mobile activity

For the first time in 40 months, gaming has a partner at the top of the charts for time spent on mobile devices with social networking reaching the 24 minute mark up from 15 minutes a year ago according to research by Flurry. Gaming dropped a minute to be in a virtual tie for the top spot. What does this say about how we’re spending our time? As smartphones and tablets emerge as the “must have” devices amongst consumers, the way we spend our time is shifting. They are the ultimate time-killers when we’re waiting. Go to any restaurant or sit on any train and watch the people who are not engaged in conversation…

Smartphones and smart ads: Microsoft ups their game

Smartphones and smart ads: Microsoft ups their game

Essentially everyone has a smartphone now. If you don’t, don’t feel badly – my phone is intelligent enough to function but doesn’t have all of the fancy additional features of an iPhone or Android. For those of you still waiting to jump into the world of smartphone users, Microsoft (yes, really, Microsoft) is trying to convince the world that it has the best and only real option for you. Let me preface this by saying that I don’t know anything about the new Nokia Lumia 900 that will be made available in new colors through AT&T this weekend on April 22, 2012. What I’d really like to focus…

Creative Cloud gives users the freedom to run any Adobe Master Collection application on a multitude of systems and store their work in the cloud. However, critics of the platform claim the cost outweighs the benefits of these Cloud features.Much like its desktop-based prototype, Adobe Creative Cloud enables users to explore, create, publish, and…

Will Google join the race to the bottom of tablet pricing?

Will Google join the race to the bottom of tablet pricing?

Google has had limited success with their Nexus-branded smartphones to date but that isn’t stopping them from moving the brand over to the tablet market. Now, rumors are circulating that they’re going to throw their name in the hat with prices starting at $149, joining the trend of reduced tablet pricing that even Apple is doing (even though only with their older iPad 2 as the New iPad rolls out). Amazon’s success with the properly-priced Kindle Fire over the holiday season and beyond has sparked more tablet makers to shoot for affordable rather than feature-rich. Ironically, this trend really…

As the workforce goes mobile, security concerns rise

As more offices become virtual and more employees work from home or on the go, the logistics of keeping devices and computers secure can be a nightmare for any IT pro. Cybercriminals are rampant looking for targets who are accessing their data from low-security connections. Businesses are at risk of data breaches more now than ever before. There are cost considerations, which is why the workforce is becoming more mobile. It makes sense thanks to technological advancements for many employees to hit the streets, make connections, and have “face time” with clients and potential clients, but every…
