George Lucas Has a New Hobby: Necromancy

George Lucas Has a New Hobby: Necromancy

Star Wars creator George Lucas has been busy of late, pulling together the makings of his grandest special effect to date: resurrecting the dead. But it’s not exactly what you think. Or, maybe it is. You didn’t honestly believe Lucas was drawing a big pantagram on the floor and sacrificing lesser farm animals, did you? Either way, it’s considerably less metal than that. I’ll let Lucas’ friend, director Mel Smith, fill you in. George has been buying up the film rights to dead actors in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together, so you’d have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck alongside…

Blockbuster? More Like... NOT-Buster

Just last night, on the way home from coffee, we passed a Blockbuster Video that had been gutted of its contents. It was eerily barren for a downtown location. “Well, shit,” I remarked. “Wasn’t this open like, last week?” Speak of the devil. In a press release, Blockbuster has just announced a “pre-arranged” Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, in order to “substantially reduce its indebtedness” from $1 billion-ish to approximately $100 million. Said CEO Jim Keyes of the move: “After a careful and thorough analysis, we determined that the process announced today provides the optimal path for recapitalizing…

Google Pitching Pay-Per-View - And Maybe This Time It'll Work

So Google is pitching a YouTube pay-per-view service to Hollywood studios that would enable video rentals for five bucks a pop. That’s not… so bad, I guess. I mean, if you’re not already a Netflix convert. But we’ll go over that in a second. YouTube’s pay-per-view is, in fact, not new. Yeah, I was surprised, too. Open since January of this year, YouTube’s rental service has offered video rentals from indie and niche publishers from $1.99 – $3.99. That is nothing if not rad, but so far, no one’s really biting. With only 1500 views in its first weekend (featuring Sundance festival titles), and only…

The Future's So 3D, I Just Got To Wear Shades

You know those douchebags who wear their sunglasses absolutely everywhere, right? Can I ask you a question? …Would you like to be one of them? Polaroid is hoping you will. Buddying up with RealD – I always say that in the movie guy voice, don’t you? – Polaroid has unleashed into the world a ‘collection’ of ‘premium’ ‘sunglasses’ that ‘protect’ your eyes from ‘sunlight’ and ’2D’. The Polaroid 3D Eyewear is designed not only as a replacement for traditional flimsy disposable RealD glasses, but also as a fashion statement. No, really. I swear, you’re reading this correctly. This is a thing. Polaroid…

Netflix vs. Redbox

Netflix vs. Redbox

What is the future of your entertainment consumption? We know movie theaters aren’t going anywhere despite how awful 3D is and the mounting ticket prices, but what about movie rentals and online streaming? To give you an idea, we are comparing two of the biggest players in movie rentals to help you decide which option is more worth the money. Just make sure that if you go with the rental option, your renters insurance covers destroyed dvds! Source: Renters Insurance EMBED THE IMAGE ABOVE ON YOUR SITE Via: Renters Insurance …

The Plot Thickens as 'The Social Network' Releases Teaser

You’ve certainly been waiting for this, haven’t you? Back in the day (the 20th, to be exact), I, like so many intrepid newsmen before me, slapped up the poster for the upcoming Dave Fincher opus The Social Network, due out soonish, maybe, perhaps. Starring Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Z and apparently Justin Timberlake as Shawn Fanning, the picture will provide a Hollywood-filtered look at the origin of that-website-what-we-hated-last-month-but-everything-seems-to-be-cool-now. Anyway, most of us immediately scoffed and demanded a trailer. With that, behold a new teaser (below… duh)…

Facebook, The Movie: This Holiday Season?

Facebook, The Movie: This Holiday Season?

Gear up for the white knuckle thrill ride of the holiday season that will speak to the soul of every man and every woman who’s ever been in love. Or something, I guess? Columbia Pictures has released the official poster and website for The Social Network, Hollywood’s version of the tale of everyone’s favourite ad-targeting service. The David Fincher (Fight Club) flick will feature Jesse Eisenberg, the ‘poor man’s Michael Cera’ (but with arguably more acting talent) as a young Mark Zuckerberg. It’s been rumoured that this film might even get some Oscar attention. For real? I mean, the Facebook…

7 Ways Technology Could Kill Us All, As Told By Hollywood

We have bestowed technology with the task of improving our lives, and as technology becomes more intertwined with our lives, it becomes a danger to mankind as well. So what happens when technology fails us? Could technology really result in the end of all humanity? If you’ve watched a few Hollywood flicks lately, it might not be too difficult to envision. A popular theme focuses on highlighting the consequences of technology, usually having technology posing all of humanity with a serious problem while our hero is tasked with saving all of us from extinction. But even though Hollywood tends to…

Six Back to the Future Innovations We're Still Waiting For

Anyone who is anyone has seen Back to the Future. You’ve seen the weird gadgets that were invented by the “Doc” and used by Marty McFly. But we can’t help but wonder where some of those gadgets that were dreamt up have been in our lives. We haven’t seen many of them yet. But we want them — we are still waiting. So here’s a recap of some of the most memorable innovations from Back to the Future II: 1. Cars that Fly The DeLorean is a staple of the movie’s success. But when they gave it wings, with its nuclear propulsion system and the necessary 1.21 gigawatts of energy to propel the car into time travel, the car…

Paramount Teams Up With Seagate to Get a Little more Kirk and Spock into Your Life

Paramount Teams Up With Seagate to Get a Little more Kirk and Spock into Your Life

In an attempt to get everyone interested in the Vulcan life, Paramount Pictures announced that they will be teaming up with Seagate Technology to sell hard drives with a copy of the newest version of “Star Trek” already installed onto the device. Paramount and Seagate are offering the 500 gigabyte hard drive special for one month only and units will sell for $100, whereas an empty drive would normally have a price tag of almost $150. The hard drives include 20 additional well-known titles such as “GI Joe” and “Nacho Libre,” and each require a code to unlock them, at $10 to $15 each. The extra films take…

Live your comic book dream and buy your way into the next X-Men movie

As reported yesterday on Entertainment Daily, a copy of the 1938 edition of Action Comis No. 1 featuring Superman’s debut sold for 1.5 million dollars at an auction. They wouldn’t reveal the name of the comic book fan who purchased the copy, but I’m assuming we may have a good idea who will be appearing in the next X-Men movie. If you have deep pockets you can bid on the chance to win a walk-on roll and have yourself featured in the movie. Good idea? I’m assuming that the role will be extremely limited but all proceeds will go to the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. If you want to bid on this amazing opportunity,…
