Social media and U: how Nintendo is connecting the masses through social networking

Social media and U: how Nintendo is connecting the masses through social networking

Gamers around the world gathered to watch coverage from the annual Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3) in Los Angeles last week. The expo has been hosted annually since 1995 and been the most popular video game event for years. Every couple of years, big name developers like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft unveil the next generation of their consoles, games, and accessories at E3. While Microsoft and Sony held press conferences to showcase their next generation consoles, the Xbox One and Playstation 4, Nintendo chose to debut a prerecorded video. Nintendo releases these videos, called…

Xbox One: Can it truly stake first place?

Xbox One: Can it truly stake first place?

From a social media marketing standpoint, a multimedia video game platform sounds like a dream. The idea seems novel an appealing: combining the functionalities of networks like Facebook and communication vehicles like Skype and integrating them into your gaming experience. From a gamer’s standpoint, it’s something that some will appreciate, and the rest won’t mind – as long as the actual software is continually released at a constant pace. But from what I’ve seen of the Xbox One so far, I can’t say I’m not skeptical. (Look, I even resorted to using a double negative.) I may not…

Is social media responsible for less E3 involvement?

Is social media responsible for less E3 involvement?

If you’re interested in gaming or anything technology-related, you most likely have your eyes set on E3 this June. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is the must-attend event of the year, especially if you’re a company looking to target gamers and investors. However, attendance at these trade shows is diminishing. Social media is taking hold of the industry. Companies are relying on Internet marketing companies to promote games rather than spending the money on attending trade shows. If you’ve been following the news, you probably know that Nintendo, which is arguably the most…

In case you missed it, the new Xbox will be revealed May 21

The vast majority of Microsoft Xbox users have known that May 21st was likely the date that the next generation of their console would be revealed. Now, it’s finally official. Invitations were sent out today to the media, most of whom had already been publishing the speculations of the special event on the 21st. This will be the final unveiling of a major console with Nintendo unwrapping the Wii U last November and Sony unveiling the Playstation 4 in February. This is by design – Xbox has been dominant in sales the past two years and wanted to be the last to the party. Nintendo needed a boost but are still…

Reminisce with this 22-year old Nintendo customer service training video

Reminisce with this 22-year old Nintendo customer service training video

There’s something epic about the power of old videos. They can bring us back in time and help us remember how things were in our lives if we were old enough to remember them. If we weren’t old enough (or if you weren’t even born yet in 1991) then they can give you a glimpse into a different era from which your parents existed. Such is the case with this simple training video from Nintendo. It highlights customer service in an era before Yelp and Google Local Reviews. It isn’t worried about the response from Twitter accounts. Customer service wasn’t being forced on companies back then. You did it because…

Nintendo needs a complete strategy shift or they'll die by 2015

Nintendo ushered in the era of modern console gaming with its first and second generation systems. Their history since then has been up and down as it fights with their primary competitors, the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox systems, to stay relevant. Things turned for the worse with the introduction of the Gamecube, clearly inferior to the competition at the time. They revived the family of systems (and arguably the company) with the innovative Wii. Now, they’ve taken a turn for the worse with the Wii U, the first entry into the 8th generation of gaming consoles that has disappointed fans…

Is the PlayStation 4 coming February 20th?

Sony started teasing a big event that they’ll be hosting on February 20th. Much of the blogosphere is buzzing that it may be the announcement of the PlayStation 4. If so, this could be the move that Sony has needed to make for a while. It isn’t that the old platform is outdated. At just over 6 years old, the PlayStation 3 is still technically the state of the art when it comes to pure console play. The Nintendo and Microsoft counterparts have had their share of interesting developments such as the Wii U and Kinect, but neither has been enough to really distance themselves from the competition. Sony has…

30,000 dominoes used to pay tribute to Nintendo

30,000 dominoes used to pay tribute to Nintendo

As Alfred put it in The Dark Knight, “Some men just want to watch the world burn.” Then, there are those who just want to build something over time just to watch them fall down again. That’s the feeling one gets when watching this tribute to Nintendo made from 30,000 dominoes meticulously placed in a way to pay homage to various popular titles. It was a bit sad to watch; that’s a lot of work put into eventual destruction. It takes a certain personality type. Can Nintendo turn things around?

Can Nintendo turn things around?

Recently, game maker Nintendo reported it’s first ever yearly operating loss.  Will it continue the downward trend, or does it have a strong rebound strategy? For the first time in the company’s history, Nintendo has posted an operating loss for the fiscal year.  For 2011 they were down by $458 million.  That doesn’t bode well for the same company that turned out some of the most popular games in history, like Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda, and the Wii. More powerful mobile devices have triggered a paradigm shift that represents an uncertain time for game makers.  “What is ailing…
