Nokia’s next generation of phones will be powered by an OS named MeeGo, the convergence of Nokia’s Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin OS. The official MeeGo site provided a preview of the new interface, which contains few surprises. The icons are displayed grid-style, like Android and iOS. Much of the visual cues and UX look similar or identical to iOS. Nokia’s new phone attempts to bridge the still fairly wide gap between touchscreen and physical keyboards. Nokia’s phones might not be quite as on the ball as Apple, HTC and Motorola, but their marketing is improving in leaps and bounds, as the Finnish Jonny Ive in the YouTube clip shows. Nokia, the tech world’s most successful failure, is buying its way out of the huge hole it’s in, purchasing Motorola’s wireless network unit for $1.2 billion. Nokia dominated the mobile industry in Europe in the years of dumb phones, but has never been able to break into the smartphone market, particularly in North America, where Apple, RIM and HTC dominate. Yahoo and Nokia have formed a partnership to serve mutually exclusive content on their differing platforms. Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone are rapidly snatching smartphone share as the race to ascendancy sees the competition sent to casualty. The latest Gartner figures today tell us Android and iPhones are gobbling up the space. Between them they now account for 25 percent of the smartphone market (in Q1), up from 12 percent last year. The Nokia/Apple patent lawsuits just got a little more real today when Nokia filed a second federal patent lawsuit alleging that the iPhone 3G and 3GS infringe on five Nokia-held patents. In addition, Nokia filed the suit in Wisconsin, a state which is known to bring a conclusion to these kinds of cases in a year or less. Nokia fired the first salvo last year, alleging several patent infractions on the part of the iPhone.
