Screenshots Of Nokia's MeeGo OS

Nokia’s next generation of phones will be powered by an OS named MeeGo, the convergence of Nokia’s Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin OS. The official MeeGo site provided a preview of the new interface, which contains few surprises. The icons are displayed grid-style, like Android and iOS. Much of the visual cues and UX look similar or identical to iOS. While Nokia clearly isn’t aiming for a revolutionary experience like Microsoft is with Windows Phone 7, it’ll be great to see a fresh coat of paint on a Nokia device….

Totally Rad Steampunk Phones For the Oldschool Gentleman

Totally Rad Steampunk Phones For the Oldschool Gentleman

I was going to ask you if you enjoy rad things, but I know you. You’re a tech blog-surfing, web-savvy, geek-chic internet all-star. I don’t need to ask stupid questions. Let’s just move on. Speaking of things which identify as rad, check this out. Or, like, don’t, whatever, but your Thursday will be less rad if you don’t rad it up with this. Designer Ivan Mavrovic doesn’t dick around when it comes to steampunking anything and everything in his world. Frankly, as far as steampunk artists go, he’s possibly one of the most adept I’ve ever seen, the list of reasons including but not limited to the fact that…

Nokia's X3 Touch And Type Lands

Nokia’s new phone attempts to bridge the still fairly wide gap between touchscreen and physical keyboards. Nokia’s phones might not be quite as on the ball as Apple, HTC and Motorola, but their marketing is improving in leaps and bounds, as the Finnish Jonny Ive in the YouTube clip shows. Nokia is following RIM in building phones that keep people comfortable with the physical keyboard they’re used to, while spoiling them with the luxury of a device that responds to touch. The device clearly isn’t targeting iOS and Android users, and the price, around $160 reflects that. But with no solid competitor…

The Biggest Waste Of Time On The Planet Just Got Wastier

The Biggest Waste Of Time On The Planet Just Got Wastier

Oh man. Guys. Check it. I’ve wasted too much of my morning on this already, and hopefully, you will too. No one’s quite sure when YouTube decided to add this easter egg, but it doesn’t work with the oldschool player, so it must have been no earlier than April. Hit up YouTube, and pause any video you like. You can also pause one you don’t like, I guess. Just find a video and pause it. Paused? Great. Now press the up and left arrow keys simultaneously. Assuming you don’t have the dexterity of a sea cucumber, you should be playing a YouTubian recreation of the classic arcade game Snake. If you’ve ever owned a…

Nokia: If You Can

Nokia: If You Can't beat 'Em, Buy 'Em

Nokia, the tech world’s most successful failure, is buying its way out of the huge hole it’s in, purchasing Motorola’s wireless network unit for $1.2 billion. Nokia dominated the mobile industry in Europe in the years of dumb phones, but has never been able to break into the smartphone market, particularly in North America, where Apple, RIM and HTC dominate. Nokia hopes the move will give them greater access to the North American market, while Motorola regroups to focus more on handsets and hardware under the name Motorola Mobility. The network will be purchased by Nokia Siemens, a joint venture…

New Bike Add-On Allows For Phone Charging... The Green Way

New Bike Add-On Allows For Phone Charging... The Green Way

The green movement has stopped being just about saving our dying planet and has become the fashionable thing to do. I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing, as on one hand it gets a group who wouldn’t normally care to be pulled into the movement involved, but on the other we lose the reason and passion of what began the movement in the process. This new phone charger from Nokia looks as if it will walk the line between the two, balancing green power and posh-ness. Nokia has come up with a way to charge your phone using the static electricity created by your rotating tire on your bike, therefore charging…

Yahoo and Nokia Enter Into Mutually Exclusive Partnership for E-Mail, Maps

Yahoo and Nokia Enter Into Mutually Exclusive Partnership for E-Mail, Maps

Yahoo and Nokia have formed a partnership to serve mutually exclusive content on their differing platforms. Nokia has offered to be the exclusive content provider for maps and navigation for Yahoo, and Yahoo has offered to be the exclusive e-mail provider for Nokia. “It’s a deeper collaboration than many expected,” said MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen. “It could really help broaden the reach of Nokia’s email and messaging services in emerging markets, where they already have decent traction.” The move by Nokia launched its stock price up by 0.4 percent, while Yahoo’s stock saw a 0.8 percent…

Android And iPhone Own The Smartphone Biz

Android And iPhone Own The Smartphone Biz

Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone are rapidly snatching smartphone share as the race to ascendancy sees the competition sent to casualty. The latest Gartner figures today tell us Android and iPhones are gobbling up the space. Between them they now account for 25 percent of the smartphone market (in Q1), up from 12 percent last year. The iPhone took 15.4 percent of the whole thing (up 5 points). Android is up 8 points to 9.6 per cent. What’s critical here is that all other smartphones lost relative share, though unit sales climbed. Android is now the fourth largest operating system, displacing…

Cell Phone Robots Make Calling Out Really Bulky and Awkward, But Are Totally Adorable

Cell Phone Robots Make Calling Out Really Bulky and Awkward, But Are Totally Adorable

Robots, man. Freaking robots. Your robotic fix today comes from PhD student Ji-Dong Yim, who has built two cell phone robots, Callo and Cally (get it? call-y? cell phone? ah, never mind). Both bots run on Nokia N82 handsets, and can move and show emotion based on user input, be it by text, voice, or even facial expression. Yim claims the aim is to explore social robotic products, in an attempt to build better relationships between robots and their owners in the future. So, like a Furby, then, JD? Because these are way cooler than a Furby. Give yourself some credit, man. Totally brought some videos for…

Nokia Says iPhone 3G Infringes on Five Patents, Sues Again

Nokia Says iPhone 3G Infringes on Five Patents, Sues Again

The Nokia/Apple patent lawsuits just got a little more real today when Nokia filed a second federal patent lawsuit alleging that the iPhone 3G and 3GS infringe on five Nokia-held patents. In addition, Nokia filed the suit in Wisconsin, a state which is known to bring a conclusion to these kinds of cases in a year or less. Nokia fired the first salvo last year, alleging several patent infractions on the part of the iPhone. Apple then launched a countersuit, and the two tech cos have been in negotiations ever since to try to hash out the issue. Additionally, Nokia has filed a complaint with the US International…

Nokia and Microsoft Team Gang Up On RIM

Nokia and Microsoft Team Gang Up On RIM

An unlikely union, Nokia & Microsoft today announced the first fruit of their slightly unusual union, Communicator Mobile, software which will run on Nokia phones to allow colleagues to communicate using email, texts, chat or phone calls. The two industry giants hope to loosen Research In Motion’s hold on the corporate sector. The software is available to users of the Nokia E52 and E72 models, and Microsoft hopes to release more software to the Nokia store soon, including Microsoft Office applications. The business world has always favored RIM’s Blackberry devices because of their full…

Nokia Attacks iPhone, BlackBerry With N8 Smartphone

Nokia Attacks iPhone, BlackBerry With N8 Smartphone

Nokia today took the wraps of its most strategically important product designed to take on the iPhone and Blackberry in the smartphone market, the unibody Nokia N8. The N8 is the first Nokia phone to run Symbian 3 software and won’t ship until the third quarter. Features of the $493 device aren’t bad – a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon Flash, a 3.5-inch HD touchscreen and HD video capture along with video editing tools. Symbian 3 offers support for gestures such as multi touch, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. The Nokia N8 also offers multiple, personalizable homescreens…
