The best Apple Store employee name ever

The best Apple Store employee name ever

Who could possible be more qualified to talk about Apple’s primary smartphone competitor than a specialist named “Sam Sung”? It’s a no-brainer, really. He knows himself better than anyone. According to Buzzfeed, this is not photoshopped. Way to go, Sam. You found your true calling….

Two geek abominations

Two geek abominations

Abomination: A thing that causes disgust or hatred. A feeling of hatred. In the world of geekness, there are few things held at higher levels in fiction than Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. To butcher a couple of the most important lines and the characters normally associated with them is a true abomination. Here’s the other: …

A 4-armed robot with a mohawk playing the drums

A 4-armed robot with a mohawk playing the drums

Sometimes, a video or story requires an introduction based upon the content itself. In this case, we’re better off just presenting the video to you. Make of it what you will. …

Since the rebellion, R2D2 has fallen on tough times

Since the rebellion, R2D2 has fallen on tough times

As the only true survivor of the entire Skywalker saga, the noble robot R2D2 watched the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and then helped his son bring about the ultimate downfall of the Empire. He has a hero in more ways than a Wookie can count which makes his current condition so much more sad. If this is how we treat our heroes when they age, what incentive does one have to be so selfless?…

Firing in a social media world

Firing in a social media world

The latest Joy of Tech comic from Geek Culture hits many people in today’s economy close to home. It’s all fun and games until it happens to you and companies are going to extreme measures to make sure that the people they lay off don’t go and bad mouth them on social media. Opinions are often more powerful than facts and the power of social media allows people to spread their opinions in different ways today….

A valid question about bank transfers

A valid question about bank transfers

There are certain financial events that seem to happen online instantaneously. When we buy something with a credit or debit card, it comes out of our balance immediately. When we purchase something with PayPal, it comes out of our balance within minutes. When we wire cash from one account to another, it takes no time at all. The question in this week’s Joy of Tech asks a good question. The only thing better than the question is the answer. RIP. …

O

O'Brien out at Mashable

And just like that, he’s gone. In an unfortunate April Fool’s Day misunderstanding, Conan O’Brien did not buy Mashable from Pete Cashmore for $3500. Instead, he purchased a M.A.S.H. television show fan site. Before he did, he was able to come up with a new way for peopel to Tweet: Here is his resignation from a site that he never actually worked for: …

The best of Google

The best of Google's 8-bit April Fool's Day maps

Google has become one of the biggest pranksters every year for April Fool’s Day. Over the years they’ve put out several clever and enjoyable pranks. This year’s first one is also an Easter Egg with plenty of Google Maps searching for people to do. They went 8-bit, NES-style. It’ll make you want to pull out the original Legend of Zelda and run around the maps from screen to screen. Here is the video as well as some of the best ones that we were able to find. Each is linked to the map itself so click away! …

In 1925, the view of 25 years into their future was epic

In 1925, the view of 25 years into their future was epic

If looking ahead 25 years were easy, we’d have flying cars and hoverboards. Unfortunately, it’s pretty challenging to predict the weather sometimes, let alone the future in a scale of a quarter century. That didn’t stop Popular Science Monthly from taking a stab at it in 1925 with their vision of a metropolis setting in 1950. Many of the ideas in the drawing are strong, including a clever multi-level transportation concept that separated slow and fast cars from pedestrians, trains, and each other. Self-sufficient buildings would keep people centralized with their day-to-day activities,…

Having a Rovio executive for a husband must be degrading

Having a Rovio executive for a husband must be degrading

When Rovio CMO Peter Vester appeared at a ball last December, his wife, Teija Vesterbacka, came in a dress that awkwardly “paid homage” to their top-selling game, Angry Birds. This wasn’t just any ball in any venue; it was the highly-exclusive annual Presidential Independence Day reception at the Finnish Presidential Palace. Whether it was her idea or his is unclear, but the “stunning” gown was designed to make an impression. What that impression was, we have no idea….

Different shades of grey... or not

Different shades of grey... or not

Optical illusions are often fanciful diversions that keep us keen to the fact that our own minds can not only be tricked, but often tricks itself. Some illusions are so mind-blowing that we try with all of our mental capacities to see reality, but we struggle to convince our minds that what we’re seeing isn’t actually what it appears to be. One of our favorites is the shaded shield illusion. Thanks to a phenomenon known as brightness constancy, we look at the shield above and assume that the area being pointed to by the green arrow is a lighter shade of grey than the area being pointed to by the blue arrow….

90s kids in 45 years

90s kids in 45 years

If you ask older people today, many would use phrases of disappointment akin to “weeping for the future” or “I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.” The perception of the future for the younger generation isn’t much different; cynicism is strong and our future doesn’t seem as bright as it once did. There is, however, a concept that may or may not be true but should make us smile nonetheless. From Reddit, here’s a vision of 2057 that appears closer to reality than most others we’ve seen lately. (H/T: La Canada Audi)…
